This paper examines the relationship between the state and the individual in relation to an aspect of mundane family life – the feeding of babies and young children. The nutritional status of children has long been a matter of national concern and infant feeding is an aspect of family life that has been subjected to substantial state intervention. It exemplifies the imposition upon women the 'biologico-moral responsibility' for the welfare of children (Foucault 1991b). The state's attempts to influence mothers' feeding practices operate largely through education and persuasion. Through an elaborate state-sponsored apparatus, a strongly medicalised expert discourse is disseminated to mothers. This discourse warns mothers of the risks of certain feeding practices and the benefits of others. It constrains mothers through a series of 'quiet coercions' (Foucault 1991c) which seek to render them self-regulating subjects. Using data from a longitudinal interview study, this paper explores how mothers who are made responsible in these medical discourses around child nutrition, engage with, resist and refuse expert advice. It examines, in particular, the rhetorical strategies which mothers use to defend themselves against the charges of maternal irresponsibility that arise when their practices do not conform to expert medical recommendations.

The article examines the strengths and weaknesses of the concept of 'flexicurity', calling into question the tendency of the contemporary cultural imagination to regard flexibility as a framework for the expression of individual freedom. It then describes a range of possible policy options, in relation to the market, in the perspective of combining flexibility of labour and security of persons. Tree major options emerge: the 'procedural', the 'neo-substantive' and the 'partnership' options. As a conclusion, this article comes out in favour of different policy which would alter the framework for public intervention. It specially underlines the need for a 'flexible' and 'decentred' Welfare State, capable of supporting and encompassing forms of regulation emanating from civil society, in particular – but not exclusively – from the social partners. ; Peer reviewed

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to review factors influencing the development of age-friendly communities, pressures arising from context of economic austerity, and issues which need to be considered for further work.


Design/methodology/approach
A synthesis of academic literature covering both age-friendly research and other relevant studies.


Findings
Pressures on the age-friendly movement include: cuts to the budgets of local authorities; impact of urban regeneration; and high levels of deprivation in inner city communities. Responses need to consider: closer links with other urban programmes (e.g. healthy cities); prioritising the challenge of social inequality; exerting great control over urban development and regeneration; and devising new approaches to delivering age-friendly interventions at a neighbourhood level.


Originality/value
Although the age-friendly movement has many achievements to its name, economic pressures are raising question marks about its future progress. The paper identifies several options for future development. Central to these must be linking age-friendly debates to the inequalities and injustices which affect city life.

A common assumption in Western legal cultures is that judicial law-making is
materialised in practices that resemble the operation of a professional
bureaucracy, practices that are also central to the construction of knowledge in
other systems, such as accounting, audit, science, and even ethnography
(Dauber 1995; Strathern 2000; Riles 2000, 2004, 2006; Maurer 2002; Yngvesson
and Coutin 2006). This argument situates the judiciary as a formalistic
organization that builds its ambition of universality on the procurement and
dissemination of knowledge on a rational basis. Drawing on ethnographic
research in the Argentine Supreme Court, this paper seeks to unpack this
assumption through a detailed look at how the figures of legal bureaucrats, in
particular law clerks, become visible through the documentary practices they
perform within the judicial apparatus. As these practices unfold, they render
visible these subjects in different forms, though not always accessible to
outsiders. Persons are displayed through a bureaucratic circuit of files that
simultaneously furthers and denies human agency while reinforcing the division
of labour within the institution. This dynamic, I argue, can be understood in
light of Marilyn Strathern's (1988) insights about the forms of objectification
and personification that operate in two "ethnographically conceived" social
domains (Pottage 2001:113): a Euro-American commodity-driven economy,
and Melanesia's economy based on gift-exchange.

This article aims to present some of the main results of contemporary French psychodynamics of work. The writings of Christophe Dejours constitute the central references in this area. His psychoanalytical approach, which is initially concerned with the impact of contemporary work practices on individual health, has implications that go well beyond the narrow psycho-pathological interest. The most significant theoretical development to have come out of Dejours's research is that of Yves Clot, whose writings will constitute the second reference point in this article. The article attempts to demonstrate that the thick definition of work that Dejours and Clot operate with, as a result of their focus on its psychological function, speaks directly, in substantial and critical ways, to all disciplines with an interest in work, to philosophers, social theorists and social scientists, including economic theorists.

Includes abstract. ; Includes bibliographical references (leaves 258-302). ; The focal research question of this thesis is the relevance of the contract of employment in modern employment. In answering this question three broad areas associated with the contract are explored: (1) the evolution of the contract of employment in South Africa and the dichotomy between the contract of employment and the independent contract; (2) the forms of engagement of workers in the South African labour market; and (3) alternative regulatory models with specific reference to models that are consistent with the South African Constitution. Using a comparative approach it is shown that the contract of employment in South Africa is in a relative state of unification. However, some assumptions about its historical evolution and the influence of Roman and Roman-Dutch law are overstated, and more recent developments, such as tax legislation, arguably had a greater influence on the dichotomising of labour law. The study of the South African world of work illustrates that modern work is performed in diverse ways. After illustrating that labour law has both countervailing and social developmental roles, it is concluded that the contract of employment as traditionally understood is no longer capable of performing these roles. It is further claimed that a process of diversification (as opposed to the unification of the contract of employment) will help to redefine the contract of employment and this may extend the coverage of labour legislation to those who, bearing in mind the purpose of labour law, ought to be protected by labour laws. Finally, it is argued that the South African Constitution provides a ready paradigm within which to achieve such a process of diversification which would ultimately lead to an extension of the coverage of labour laws.
