The Building as Screen: A History, Theory, and Practice of Massive Media describes, historicizes, theorizes, and creatively deploys massive media - a set of techno-social assemblages and practices that include large outdoor projections, programmable architectural façades, and urban screens -- in order to better understand their critical and creative potential. Massive media is named as such not only because of the size and subsequent visibility of this phenomenon but also for its characteristic networks and interactive screen and cinema-like qualities. Examples include the programmable lighting of the Empire State Building and the interactive projections of Montreal's Quartier des spectacles, as well as a number of works created by the author himself. This book argues that massive media enables and necessitates the development of new practices of expanded cinema, public data visualization, and installation art and curation that blend the logics of urban space, monumentality, and the public sphere with the aesthetics and affordances of digital information and the moving image.

The face of journalism has changed massively as a result of the 2001 attacks in the United States and that nation's self-styled 'war on terrorism'. Those changes have been chronicled in recent collections,1 and more will surely follow, but I would like to use this
journal debut to describe a 'post 9/11' phenomenon simultaneously too veiled and too hegemonic to have received much notice from academy or industry commentators. While American and British ruling elites2 are exercising unprecedented control over international representations of
their policies, analysis of the systematic 'new spin' is sparse. The new propaganda and coercion are clearly integral to US foreign policy, but the extent to which they are coordinated and sanctioned is often unclear; less ambiguous is how brutally effective they have become.

Newspaper coverage of state legislative term limits is examined in states without term limits, with implemented term limits, & with passed term limits yet take effect. From a content analysis for the 10-year period, 1991-2000, the article examines four possible explanations for media coverage of term limits: partisan bias, value of the existing order, altruistic democracy, & negativity bias. Newspapers tended to portray term limits positively, but they portray their implementation & effects negatively. Optimism that existed for term limits (that they would reduce corruption & create a more efficient legislature) was replaced in the media with suggestions that lobbyists had too much power & legislators too little experience in termed legislatures. It concludes with a discussion of the potential for this media coverage to foment disdain for government. 3 Tables, 3 Figures, 39 References. Adapted from the source document.

; This paper proposes a model to analyze city representations in mass media from the mediational perspective developed by Manuel Martín Serrano (1977, 2008). It has reviewed some theoretical production about political economy, urban sociology, and geography, to identify and characterize the kind of urban order that defines a particular city, its public space and the citizens who inhabit there. Thus it provides a methodological and theoretical base to identify the social changes of a public space of any city, depending on the historical and geographic context to which it belongs. The proposal could be interesting for those who have as object of study the urban phenomenon, as for those who do it from the point of view of communication practices.

; The Citizens' Revolution, the political process initiated in Ecuador with the presidential inauguration of Rafael Correa in 2007, initiated a radical transformation in the media comparable to other progressive governmental experiments in the region. The political process led by Correa has pursued a change in power relations and ownership, the introduction of regulation, the demystification of the established media discourse, and an abandonment of the market as a guiding principle in the media. From the perspective of the equitable redistribution of media power, however, it is still an open process whose outcome is uncertain. ; Fil: Kitzberger, Philip.
