The unprecedented results of the 2008 national elections took many Malaysians by surprise. The component parties of the ruling coalition suffered huge losses, while the opposition was victorious in several states. Many media scholars and political pundits, including politicians, pointed to the online platform as a democratic tool that had increased support for the opposition. In the 2013 election the ruling party turned its spotlight on new media to try to regain voter support. In order to obtain a better understanding of the much-touted democratizing effects of the online media, this book employs an alternative lens to examine the use of new media at the intersection of social and political realities. It explores the ways individual political bloggers, Facebookers and Twitterers used cyberspace to battle for voter support in the 2008 and 2013 national elections. It examines the cultural practices and the social and political affiliation and aims of individual actors, as well as the social ties that subsequently emerged from the use of the online media. This research employs a political economy approach to the media, Habermasï's notion of the public sphere, and the social determinism perspective in order to understand the extent to which online media can enrich political life and bring about new ways of campaigning

ABSTRACTAlthough client satisfaction information is often ignored, it is a critical piece of the picture when evaluating the service experience of parents who have had their children placed in foster care. This article describes the development of a client satisfaction instrument and information generated from its use. The findings describe the psychometrics of the instrument, a descriptive profile of the satisfaction scores of the respondents, and some intriguing relationships between distinct aspects of client satisfaction. The service implications of these findings are considered and discussed.

This book is a companion to Neither Led nor Driven, published in 2004. It examines the secular aspects of culture in Jamaica, namely, material culture (architecture and home furnishings, dress, and food), rites of passage, language and oral culture, creative and performance arts, popular entertainment, sports and games, social clubs and fraternities, and the issues of drinking and gambling. It also examines the lifestyle cultures of Indian and Chinese immigrants who were new arrivals in Jamaica.

Social scientists have long argued over the links between crime and place. The authors of Communities and Crime provide an intellectual history that traces how varying images of community have evolved over time and influenced criminological thinking and criminal justice policy. The authors outline the major ideas that have shaped the development of theory, research, and policy in the area of communities and crime. Each chapter examines the problem of the community through a defining critical or theoretical lens: the community as social disorganization; as a system of associations; as a symptom of larger structural forces; as a result of criminal subcultures; as a broken window; as crime opportunity; and as a site of resilience. Focusing on these changing images of community, the empirical adequacy of these images, and how they have resulted in concrete programs to reduce crime, Communities and Crime theorizes about and reflects upon why some neighborhoods produce so much crime. These changes are also reflected in urban music practices, which play a crucial role in the lives of many young people. Music is one of the ways in which youth can address marginalization. With the possibilities afforded by a number of associations, which provide musical instruments, classes and rehearsal studios, music has become more accessible to the young. It is a leisure activity with educational aspects, a means of socialization beyond social and cultural borders. It also cements networks between musicians that enrich or replace former family and community ties. Finally music offers opportunities for public expression, peaceful political demands, dreams of freedom, etc. Studying these roles of music as forms of agency for young people can shed light on many aspects of their lives in the city of Port-Vila today. ; Une urbanisation et un développement industriel rapides de Port-Vila, capitale du Vanuatu, ont fait émerger certaines formes de pauvreté et de fragilité sociale. This book presents an accessible and sometimes controversial economic exploration of numerous issues surrounding sex, marriage and family. It analyses the role of 'vanity', defined as social status and self-esteem, in social and economic behaviours. In Veblen's theory of conspicuous consumption, vanity is associated with the consumption of luxuries such as expensive handbags and cars. In this book, C. Simon Fan provocatively argues that vanity is obtained by having a spouse and children with perceived 'high-quality' values, for example, a beautiful wife, a tall husband or intelligent offspring.
