Seeks to integrate new scientific approaches into contemporary conflict intervention strategies. Critiques the dominant conflict resolution models and proposes the development of regional conflict management centers. Stresses the need to accept the postmodern precept that conflict and instability are normative aspects of social systems and that it is necessary to cultivate ways of building complex understandings at the phenomenal, group, and national levels. "Nigger" is arguably the most consequential social insult in American history. In this book, the author traces how the word has been used and by whom, while analyzing the controversies to which it has given rise. The author explores such topics as how "nigger" should be defined and whether blacks have a right to use "nigger" while others do not
; Institutional Repositories are a new element in the university environment in terms of scientific communication and digital presence of the production of the universities. But the quickly evolving digital environment, as well as the various actors involved in scientific publication. The most significant change in web communication in recent years has been the emergence of services subsumed under the label Web 2.0 that includes various link sharing services, digital objects, managing relationships, information reuse, etc. Some scientific journals are already offering such services. This study analyzes the degree of implementation of such services in the field of Spanish institutional repositories. Firstly, the types of services considered 2.0 are identified and it's analysed if these can be useful for scientific communication. Secondly, it's analyzed which of these possibilities are offered by the repositories. Finally, the results for the actions taken are discussed and possible lines of improvement are identified.
The biblical New Testament & Karl Marx & Friedrich Engels's Communist Manifesto (1848) are perceived as texts that strive for social justice & offer predictions of future events. Although the literal acceptance of Christian or Marxist prophecies is unwarranted, it is contended that both texts continue to provide inspiration & encouragement. Nevertheless, various political actors & interest groups (eg, the Christian Coalition in the US & the Sendero Luminoso movement in Peru) illustrate the power of both texts to obstruct the attainment of social justice. Rather than emphasize the apocalyptic aspects of the New Testament, it is contended that its human relations aspects require additional emphasis to achieve social justice. Passing on the Communist Manifesto to future generations is favored over the New Testament, since the latter discounts correcting social problems. Nevertheless, it is concluded that a text without the apocalyptic components of the New Testament or the Communist Manifesto would be more appropriate for future generations. J. W. Parker
Convinced of the need to consider other influential variables, we address from the CICLA project the general objective of knowing mobility in urban areas of Andalusia. More specifically we are committed to knowing which are the main social discourses and practices around the use of the bicycle, within the need to incorporate social, economic, political and cultural aspects usually separated from the analysis. Based on a qualitative methodology and a holistic approach, the results of this research shed light on some of these aspects, providing some conclusions and reflections of interest for the promotion of the bicycle as a means of transport in our cities

"As population estimates for 2050 reach over 9 billion, issues of food security and nutrition have been dominating academic and policy debates. A total of 805 million people are undernourished worldwide and malnutrition affects nearly every country on the planet. Despite impressive productivity increases, there is growing evidence that conventional agricultural strategies fall short of eliminating global hunger, as well as having long-term ecological consequences. Forests can play an important role in complementing agricultural production to address the Sustainable Development Goals on zero hunger. Forests and trees can be managed to provide better and more nutritionally-balanced diets, greater control over food inputs--particularly during lean seasons and periods of vulnerability (especially for marginalised groups)--and deliver ecosystem services for crop production. However forests are undergoing a rapid process of degradation, a complex process that governments are struggling to reverse. This volume provides important evidence and insights about the potential of forests to reducing global hunger and malnutrition, exploring the different roles of landscapes, and the governance approaches that are required for the equitable delivery of these benefits. Forests and Food is essential reading for researchers, students, NGOs and government departments responsible for agriculture, forestry, food security and poverty alleviation around the globe. This book is based on the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) Global Forest Expert Panel report on Forest and Food Security

This book is a forthright and novel examination of efforts to improve global governance over the last forty years. It looks at the effects of governance changes on people that have been marginalized by industrial progress and international conflict and the inability of national governments to meet the needs of global society. Economics has long laid claims to providing the basis for global prosperity, but this promise has all to frequently been broken. Michel Foucault looked closely at economics and neoliberalism as a possible means for guiding modern governments to allow individuals to govern themselves and others. He focused on the evolution of social development as a consequence of many disciplines and biopolitical forces, but he never looked at his data from the perspective of economics alone. This book offers a Foucauldian interpretation of contemporary governance issues, such as global security, social cohesion, economic crisis and financialization, to the formidable problems that the world faces at the beginning of the 21st century.--
This book reveals the extent to which athletic participation has become a social eligibility factor in the success of candidates for elected office. Doherty examines the role participation in athletics played for women looking to run for office. She goes on to appraises the ways in which potential cutbacks and already limited opportunities for women in sports might further affect their opportunities to attain viable candidate status

Environmental Radioactivity from Natural, Industrial, and Military Sources is the comprehensive source of information on radiation in the environment and human exposure to radioactivity. This Fourth Edition isa complete revision and extension of the classic work, reflecting major new developments and concerns as the Cold War ended, nuclear weapons began to be dismantled, and cleanup of the nuclear weapons facilities assumed center stage. Contamination from accidents involving weapons, reactors, and radionuclide sources are discussed in an updated chapter, including the latest information about the effects of the Chernobyl accident. Important revisions are also made to the chapters on natural radioactivity, nuclear fuels and power reactors, radioactive waste management, and various other sources of exposure. Several chapters provide primers for readers who may not be familiar with the fundamentals of radiation biology, protection standards, and pathways for the environmental transport of radionuclides. An Appendix lists the properties of the more important radionuclides found in the environment. The book concludes with a commentary on contemporary social aspects of radiation exposure and risks that offers analternative view to current, often excessive concerns over radiation, nuclear technology, and waste. Key Features * Describes every important source of environmental radioactivity * Reviews the vexing problems of radioactive waste management and cleanup of contaminated sites * Contains measured or projected radiation dose estimates for the major sources * Features 126 figures, 80 tables, and more than 1200 references * Discusses current problems in historical context * The two authors bring more than 75 years of combined experience with environmental radioactivity * Provides an understanding of the sources of environmental radioactivity and human exposure from the mining of ores to final disposal of wastes * Thoroughly reviews important contamination accidents
