"British Social Attitudes (BSA) is a high quality survey that has been conducted annually since 1983 by NatCen Social Research. Each year's survey asks a random sample of people living in Great Britain their views on a wide range of social and political issues. The survey aims to facilitate (i) the development and evaluation of public policy, and (ii) the academic study of public opinion. Thanks to its practice of regularly repeating questions asked in previous years, it has become the premier source of information on long-term trends in social attitudes in Britain"--

The Teaching Writing series publishes user-friendly writing guides penned by authors with publishing records in their subject matter. Infused with multidisciplinary examples, humor, and a healthy dose of irreverence, Fallon helps emerging researchers successfully navigate the intellectual and emotional challenges of writing quantitative research reports. After reinforcing foundations in methodology, statistics, and writing in the first section of the book, emerging researchers work through a series of questions to construct their research report. The final section contains sample papers generated by undergraduates illustrating three major forms of quantitative research—primary data collection, secondary data analysis, and content analysis. Writing up Quantitative Research in the Social and Behavioral Sciences is appropriate for research methods classes in communication, criminology or criminal justice, economics, education, political science, psychological science, social work, and sociology. Individual students and novice researchers can also read the book as a supplement to any course or research experience that requires writing up quantitative data

10 yrs experience as Ed-in-Chief of a magazine that tries to present sociol to the layman is described. Ideological, editorial, & practical problems of Transaction are recounted & the growth of the magazine as a public voice is traced. Various shifts & changes are noted, eg, the changeover from a predominantly sociol'al to an interdisciplinary soc sci focus, the growing stress on topics of pol, sex, & religion, change in ownership, & the journal's penetration into mass book publication. As a business, Transaction has to please its readers. But soc sci is more than a business; it is an ideology & it has needs & makes representations of its own. "It is the driving passion for a world of peace & reason to which all soc sci must ultimately dedicate itself, despite the absence of any logical, formal mandate to do so." The magazine tries to bridge the gap between the mass COMM world & the elite sci'fic community by presenting "the big picture, as lived by small people." M. Maxfield.

"This book focuses on fundamental elements of time-series analysis that social scientists need to understand to employ time-series analysis for their research and practice. Avoiding extraordinary mathematical materials, this book explains univariate time-series analysis step-by-step, from the preliminary visual analysis through the modeling of seasonality, trends, and residuals to the prediction and the evaluation of estimated models. Then, this book explains smoothing, multiple time-series analysis, and interrupted time-series analysis. At the end of each step, this book coherently provides an analysis of the monthly violent-crime rates as an example."--Provided by publisher

This article explores research that, by definition or in practice, is conducted by the social science community at the international level. International research contrasts with most social science research, which is conducted within state boundaries by scholars who work on projects individually or in small groups. A survey of key research quality gatekeepers reveals a diverse range of international research activities in the UK, across all the disciplines, as well as extensive collaborative links with scholars around the world. Evidence of the characteristics present in research that transcends national & local limitations is presented, & revealing judgments about the comparative quality of international research in the social sciences emerge. This evidence also puts into perspective the common view that the US is the world leader in social science research. Furthermore, it shows that international social science is currently limited, but has the potential to host massive projects. 4 Tables, 4 Graphs, 4 References. Adapted from the source document.
