Taking a multidisciplinary and global approach, this edited book examines the dynamic role of plantations as productive, socio-political and ecological forms throughout imperial and post-colonial worlds spanning multiple and broad temporalities. Showcasing an expansive range of case studies across different geographies, the collection sheds light on the heterogeneity of plantations and offers insights into the afterlives, spectres and remnants of systems that have been analysed as schemes of production, extraction and authority. Focusing on the expansion of plantation systems throughout various political-economic and ecological projects, and across the modern (and post-modern) period, allows the authors to move beyond analyses that often deal with individual empires through human-centered lenses. The contributors explore resistance to the mechanisms of extraction and control that plantations and their afterlives demanded, shedding light on their excesses, contradictions, failures and deviations. Offering a comprehensive treatment of global plantations, this book provides valuable reading for researchers with an interest in the socio-political and environmental effects of colonialism and imperialism in their various guises. Arguing that climate injustice is one of our most pressing urban problems, this volume explores the possibilities and challenges for more just urban futures under climate change. Whether the situation be displacement within cities through carbon gentrification or the increasing securitization of elite spaces for climate protection, climate justice and urban justice are intimately connected. Contributors to the volume build theoretical tools for interrogating the root causes of climate change, as well as policy failures. They also highlight knowledge produced within communities already seeking transformative change and demonstrate meaningful learning from activist groups working to address the socionatural injustices caused by the impact of climate change. The editors' introduction situates our current climate emergency within historical processes of colonization, racial capitalism, and heteropatriarchy, while the editors' conclusion offers pathways forward through abolition, care, and reparations. Where other books focus on the project of critique, this collection advances real-world politics to help academics, practitioners, and social justice groups imagine, create, and enact more just urban futures under climate change.
Presenting a host of in-depth case studies, Time and Language: New Sinology and Chinese History argues for and demonstrates the significance of New Sinology by restoring the role of language/philology in the research and understanding of how modern China emerged
This book explores how identities, public spheres and collective memories are being transformed in cross-border areas, contributing to the broad sociological context of Europeanization. Offering case studies on the German-Czech-Austrian, and Czech-Polish-German borderlands, the book introduces original primary data on cross-border cooperation. This data is interpreted using the concept of active borders, which approaches borders as a source of multicultural competence and cognitive capacity. In turn, the authors argue that Europeans need to treat borders, both territorial and symbolic, as specific cultural forms. Active borders allow an unprecedented level of cross-border cooperation and integration, and foster a better understanding of differences, rather than re-embedding them or constructing others. Accordingly, the authors contend that active borders promote more dynamic, open and resilient societies, and represent crucial prerequisites for the success of the European integration project
"Historians have not convincingly explained modern capitalism's two major economic crises, the Great Depression of the 1930s, and the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) of 2008-2009. Accounting for Crises offers a new explanation, why both began and were more severe in the USA ("America"), based on an accounting interpretation of Marx's theory of crises. It explains their origins in capitalists' control of accumulation, which reveals important overlooked roles for Irving Fisher's accounting theory. This theory, by allowing discretion in accounts, in the context of falling rates of profit, encouraged "swindling", overstating reported profits, and understating their risk, which facilitated and aggravated both crises. Framed by Fisher's theory, during the 1920s American accounting theorists justified discretion, which Creating the "Big Mess" (the companion volume) concluded it management used to conservatively smooth earnings. Accounting for Crises shows that Fisher's theory , also underlays the popular new theory of investment that justified valuing shares using reported earnings, which encouraged their manipulation and legitimized "speculation". This, it argues, underlays America's exceptional late-1920s stock market boom, the 1929 Great Crash, and the depth and length of its Great Depression. Prominently associated with the boom, Fisher became unpopular after the crash, his name disappearing from public debate. Nevertheless, the book concludes, his theory hindered economic recovery, weakened 1930s reforms, undermined accounting regulation from the late-1930s, and following his rehabilitation from the late-1950s, underlies the Financial Accounting Standards Board's conceptual framework, which by allowing off-balance-sheet accounting for securitization-SPEs, fostered the 2007 "credit crunch" that triggered the 2008-2009 Global Financial Crisis (GFC)."
"Sharing is emphasized to children seemingly from birth! But, it's not until children are about 4 years old that they are developmentally able to truly understand how and why to share with friends and siblings. In this adorable book, early readers see many examples of sharing at home, at school, and out and about. The low-ATOS text is written in complete sentences to aid reading fluency. "By preschool, many kids have a sense of what being "nice" means: sharing with a sibling, using please and thank you, and not arguing. Kindness encompasses so many behaviors, and one of the best ways for kids to learn them all is by exposure. This book helps readers recognize and understand what behaviors are kind to others, including friends, teachers, siblings, and caregivers. Low-ATOS text written in complete sentences aids reading fluency and full-color photographs correlate with text to help comprehension"--
"So many young learners are excited to engage with their peers and teachers in a school or class setting. But, this eagerness can quickly devolve into chaos if rules about speaking and taking turns speaking aren't implemented. In this book, readers encounter many examples of kids just like them raising their hands to ask and answer questions, to ask to go the bathroom, or otherwise communicate with grown-ups. Full-color photographs directly correlate to the low-ATOS text to aid reading comprehension"--
Hochschulrat ( 41 NHG) Akkreditierung ( 6 NHG)

Though forced displacement constituted a central and pervasive feature of the Northern Ireland Troubles effecting tens of thousands of citizens, remarkably it has been afforded little more than a footnote or fleeting reference in most accounts of the conflict
This book provides a comprehensive analysis covering the confluence of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cyber Forensics and Digital Policing in the context of the United Kingdom (UK), United States (US) and European Union (EU) national cybersecurity. More specifically, this book explores ways in which the adoption of AI algorithms (such as Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Natural Language Processing, and Big Data Predictive Analytics (BDPAs) transforms law enforcement agencies (LEAs) and intelligence service practices. It explores the roles that these technologies play in the manufacture of security, the threats to freedom and the levels of social control in the surveillance state. This book also examines the malevolent use of AI and associated technologies by state and non-state actors. Along with this analysis, it investigates the key legal, political, ethical, privacy and human rights implications of the national security uses of AI in the stated democracies. This book provides a set of policy recommendations to help to mitigate these challenges. Researchers working in the security field as well advanced level students in computer science focused on security will find this book useful as a reference. Cyber security professionals, network security analysts, police and law enforcement agencies will also want to purchase this book
Exploring the confused, and often highly unjust, thinking about immigration, Sir Michael Dummett questions the principles and justifications governing state policies, pointing out that they often conflict with the Geneva Convention.
