Islam, secularist government, and state-civil society interaction in Mozambique and South Africa since 1994
In: Kaarsholm , P 2015 , ' Islam, secularist government, and state-civil society interaction in Mozambique and South Africa since 1994 ' , Journal of Eastern African Studies , vol. 9 , no. 3 , pp. 468-487 . https://doi.org/10.1080/17531055.2015.1082255
This article explores state–civil society interactions in Mozambique and South Africa with a focus on Islamic groupings, and places the two countries within an Indian Ocean coastal continuum of links to East Africa, India, and the Arab world. Contrasting the histories of dominant-party rule since the transitions in 1994 to multiparty-ism in Mozambique and to democracy in South Africa, the article discusses the development of Islamic organisations including both transnational Sufi orders and modernist reform movements as important components in local civil societies. The article contrasts the spaces for accommodation of Islamic groups that have been created in South Africa with the more radical secularism that has been in place in post-Independence Mozambique. Finally, the article discusses the effects of this contrast on possibilities for stability and democratic consolidation in the context of the 2014 elections in South Africa and Mozambique. ; This article explores state–civil society interactions in Mozambique and South Africa with a focus on Islamic groupings, and places the two countries within an Indian Ocean coastal continuum of links to East Africa, India, and the Arab world. Islam and Secularization
In: Asian journal of social science, Band 33, Heft 3, S. 438-448
ISSN: 2212-3857
AbstractThis article looks at the relationship of the religious and the secular from a historical perspective. Contrasting historical facts, including a traditional religious consciousness, and the political religious language of recent times, it is shown that there is no natural given boundary separating the two dimensions. Instead, the whole discussion derives from an advanced state of a secular mind. In nineteenth and the twentieth century thought in institutions in the Middle East, for example, in the fields of law, education, administration and mass culture, there was experienced an irreversible process of change towards secularity. This process was facilitated by the co-existence and intersection of the religious and the secular. The dichotomy of the religious and the secular emerged within popularized fundamentalism, which itself has to be seen as a fruit of the secularization process encouraging religion to turn into a matter of politics and "social engineering".

Political Islam and the secular state in Turkey: democracy, reform and the justice and development party
In: Library of modern Turkey 11
"How safe is Turkey's liberal democracy? The rise to power in 2002 of the right-leaning Islamic Justice and Development Party ignited fears in the West that Turkey could no longer be relied upon to provide a buffer against the growth of Islamic fundamentalism in the Middle East. Once hailed by the West as a model of secularism and moderation in the Muslim world, Turkey is now seen to be under the influence of the 'creeping Islamisation' of the JDP (or AKP as it is known in Turkey). Yet to what extent has this affected the lives of Turkish citizens? Evangelia Axiarlis here explores the contribution of the JDP to civil liberties and basic freedoms, long suppressed by secular and statist Kemalist ideology, and how this has remained unexamined despite more than a decade in government. In this--the first detailed study of the policies and ideology of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdo?an's government--the author examines the extent to which the JDP has worked to improve civil life in Turkey and critically addresses whether a government built on Islamic principles can champion political reform. Exploring how Islam and democracy are neither monoliths nor mutually exclusive, this is a timely contribution to the wider understanding of political Islam."--Publisher's website

Why Islam Is Like Spanish: Cultural Incorporation in Europe and the United States
In: Politics & society, Band 27, Heft 1, S. 5-38
ISSN: 0032-3292
Examines contentious debates over immigration that focus on Islam in Europe & Spanish in the US. It is argued that European identities are deeply embedded in Christian tradition, & Muslim newcomers make up a visible Other, in spite of their diverse backgrounds. Although broader religious sentiments in the US more easily accommodate other faiths, the English language is a crucial unifying element threatened by Spanish-speaking immigrants. It is argued that collective identity formation is a dialectical process that delineates the boundaries between "us" & "not us." Incorporation, which involves negotiations surrounding these boundaries, consists of individual boundary crossing, blurring, & shifting; however, the actors are not equal since power relations are tipped in favor of the host majority. The role played by immigration in the development of Europe & the US is discussed, along with how religion & language have manifested themselves in the public/private spheres, the symbolic significance of policy choices, & future prospects for religious pluralism & language assimilation. ETHNIC AND CONFESSIONAL IN ISLAM: IS "TRUE ISLAM" SO RELIGIOUSLY PURE?
In: Russia and the moslem world, Heft 1, S. 5-20
Since the 1980s of the 20 century ideology, and then the practice of the so-called "Pure Islam" began, under external influence, to sneak actively to the territory of Russia. Its adherents entered into irreconcilable confrontation with the supporters of traditional Islam and it resulted in the emergence and development of religious and political extremism and terrorism under the guise of Moslem beliefs. In this regard, it seems relevant to find out whether the so-called "pure Islam," free from the influence of ethnicity and traditional values really exists.
