Stigma refers to any negative perception on an object. If something is being stigmatized, the mass population shall expel those being stigmatized through treating them differently. And those being stigmatized shall strongly feel a sense of difference from the mainstream value. In this paper, social stigma on public rental housing (PRH) in Hong Kong is the core focus of study. Experiences from foreign countries having significant PRH developments clearly show that large-scale PRH neighbourhood usually bears strong social stigma for the simple reason of the concentration of the underclass. Owing to the various government policies in respect of PRHs implemented, i.e. targeted PRH allocation policy, intensive management practices, homeownership promotion and limited investment in enhancing PRH living condition together with the ill-intentional reporting method adopted by the mass media to exaggerate the family problems encountered by the PRH residents in order to boost up their sales rate, social stigmatization of large-scale PRH is greatly reinforced. PRH residents then easily feel a sense of inferiority and being looked down upon resulting in being treated differently in many aspects of daily living. Non-PRH residents also contribute to sustain such stigma on PRH residents through minimizing their social contacts with the latter to significantly exclude them from the normal society. To cope with such negative perception on PRHs, governments of foreign countries tried to conduct image engineering programmes to alleviate the poor image such as launching redevelopment programmes and the realization of tenure mix practices if possible. In a word, it is crystal clear that social stigma on PRH exists in the large-scale PRH developments in foreign countries which associates with both their residents and residency. Back to my local research, the number of PRH in Hong Kong is consistently increasing. What would be the phenomenon of PRH in Hong Kong nowadays? This comes to the centre study of this research which is to draw a convincing conclusion to justify or refute if social stigma on PRHs in Hong Kong is apparent. To develop a coherent argument to testify the statement, a straightforward plan of analysis by adopting four social outcomes measuring instruments, i.e. perceptions on PRHs from PRH and non-PRH residents; phenomenon of PRHs, acceptability of PRHs and the root causes accounting for residents' perception, is established to take up the task. To realize the analytical framework, secondary data from the Hong Kong Housing Department (HD) would be obtained to study; site visit to Tin Yiu Estate, an estate locates in the "City of Sadness" – Tin Shui Wai for grasping the genuine PRH residency would be conducted; street questionnaire surveys in Tin Shui Wai Estate neighbourhood and the Central and Western District would also be carried out to collect the primary perception from PRH and non-PRH residents on PRH. By analysing all the data obtained, it is nevertheless concluded that social stigma on PRHs in Hong Kong is, overall speaking, not apparent, social stigma on Tin Shui Wai PRH estates are perceived. Besides, the role of the mass media in shaping the perception of the majority mass on PRHs in Hong Kong is found to be significant. Also, the reason for applying for PRHs shifts from "residents' genuine need" to "a kind of benefit opened to all those eligible". Such findings are food for thought for the policy makers to address. The paper examines the methodological aspect of using data in historical research. In the context of dataism, discussions are presented about the features of formalizing information from historical sources in data models. To-day, in debates about the principles of using information technologies in historical research, one can encounter many contradictions related to the complexities of interaction between the approaches of computer, historical and social sciences. There are still oppositions between qualitative and quantitative approaches, despite the widespread use of "mixed methods" and Digital Humanities research approaches, as well as the differences between the goals of the information technology industry and academia. Data becomes the commonplace of such discussions because actual research relays on it. The paper examines the features of data in historical research, which make it possible to abstract from the original historical sources and collect systematic, formalized observations. Such data features as format, memory and passivity are considered. Attention is paid to such properties of research data as volume, velocity, varie-ty, veracity, variability, visualization, value (7Vs). It argues that historical data, in a semiotic sense, performs three functions: naming the properties of objects in the real world (nomination), connecting the named properties (predica-tion), and locating the named objects in space and time (location). From a methodological perspective, data in histor-ical research is viewed as a method of abstract observation. It involves systematically and strictly formalizing obser-vations from various historical sources. Despite the established disciplinary differences in digital approaches within history and digital humanities, data becomes a common basis that expands the researcher's toolbox.

The departure point of this paper is the use of visualization as a tool in action case research. In such research, the researcher seeks a balance between interpreting qualitative data and intervening to solve the problem of the research partner. The communicative and knowledge aspects of visualization are highlighted. The research partner in this research, Flower Systems Ltd. (FSL), is a software company that has developed the ISOX 2000 document management system especially to meet the needs of social services in local governments. Over the last year, employees at various social service agencies have complained about the usability and user friendliness of ISOX. In the action case research two kinds of results are expected: concrete results, as in taking action in a problem solving context (here, the usability problem with ISOX), and conceptual results, as in listing proposed changes to a theoretical framework. The question raised in this paper is: What are the benefits of using visualization as a tool for building interpretations and understandings that are shared by both researchers and practitioners? The concrete results of the collaboration are 1) a more user-friendly, redesigned version of ISOX based on the use of different visualization techniques and 2) a change in how FSL works on redesign. The conceptual result is a list of proposed changes to the knowledge visualization framework, based on the empirical findings and theoretical framework regarding visualization

Dirty Work profiles a number of occupations that society deems tainted. The volume vivid, ethnographic reports focuses on the communication that helps workers manage the moral, social, and physical "stains" that derive from engaging in such occupations. The creative ways that those who perform such dirty work learn to communicate and with outsiders regulates the negative aspects of the work itself and emphases the positives so that workers can maintain a sense of self-value even while performing devalued occupations

The Human Aspects of the Operational Environment (HAOE) study explores those dimensions of human beings which would likely impact future NATO operations. It is designed to serve as the foundation for a follow-on Bi-Strategic Command (Bi-SC) capstone concept, which would inform the NATO Defence Planning Process (NDPP) and transform existing capabilities to better adapt to human requirements in operations. The HAOE study is based on shortfalls and gaps identified in recent operations as well as the work of seven distinct research panels. The HAOE study proposes capability transformations that can mitigate the challenges NATO might face in future operational environments as the human dimension becomes increasingly more important. The report concludes that increased cooperation and coordination with international organizations (IOs), governmental bodies, academia, think-tanks, and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) using a Comprehensive Approach strategy would improve the Alliance's effectiveness in conducting Non-Article 5 Crises Response Operations (NA5CRO). However, the evolving characteristics of the security environment require NATO to build a common understanding of trends and inform its continuing transformation efforts. The HAOE research focuses on seven broad areas: main drivers of human action; understanding the human environment; complexity of cross-cultural communication; dynamics of the local situation; perception and acceptance of NATO operations; measurable indicators of a population's attitude toward NATO operations; and transforming NATO capabilities to better adapt to the human environment. A summarization of key findings from each research area is provided in the following paragraphs. Understanding the main drivers of human action enhances rapport building with the local population.

This paper discusses methodological aspects of recent climate change damage studies. Assessing the total and/or marginal damage costs of environmental change is often difficult and it is certainly difficult in the case of climate change. A major obstacle is the uncertainty on the physical impacts of climate change, especially related to extreme events and so-called 'low-probability high-impact' scenarios. The subsequent transposition of physical impacts into monetary terms is also a delicate step, given that climate change impacts involve both market and non-market goods and services, covering health, environmental and social values, and that impacts may be distant in time and space. The complexity of climate change cost assessment thus involves several crucial dimensions, including non-market evaluation, risk and uncertainty, baseline definition, equity and discounting. The paper discusses these issues and stresses the importance of political perspectives in integrated assessment research.

International audience ; Article deals with the investigation the legal nature of the state. It was found that the state is the allied unity of settled people provided with primary power of primacy. The essence of the state lies in creation of conditions for the development of the civil society, implementation of shared interests of members of society. The state is a means of social compromise of members of civil society. It appears not only as a form of provision of such social compromise, but also as an active and equal member of the relevant legal relations. The ability of the state to be an active participant in social communications configures its natural right that can and should be implemented. As a result, the subject gets legal opportunities for its activities and transformed into a legal person the nature of which is revealed through the signs of interest, will of the subject and its individual separation. Since the state is a union of interests of persons united in the unified social organism for their support, the fact that the legal entity as a legal person synthesizes in itself not only characteristics peculiar to the corporation, but also characteristics peculiar to the state as a legal person is justified. Implementation of the civil capacity of the state is revealed through the institution of representation. The justification of universal character of legal capacity of the state is given. It is proved that the subject of legal relations is not the specified one, the nature of relations in which it stands is also not specified. The volume right of an individual, who is granted with certain powers from the principal, is specified. The special capacity is not peculiar to the state as a legal person, but to a relevant government authority that implements its own competence, for which it has the rights and obligations, exercises the authority, including private-legal sphere.

Despite the fact that the globalization process tends to reinforce existing inequality structures and generate new areas of inequality on multiple levels, systematic analyses on this very important field remain scarce. Hence, this book approaches the complex question of inequality not only from different regional perspectives, covering Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin and Northern America, but also from different disciplinary perspectives, namely cultural anthropology, economics, ethnology, geography, international relations, sociology, and political sciences. The contributions are subdivided into three essential fields of research: Part I analyzes the socio-economic dimension of global exclusion, highlighting in particular the impacts of internationalization and globalization processes on national social structures against the background of theoretical concepts of social inequality. Part II addresses the political dimension of global inequalities. Since the decline of the Soviet Union new regional powers like Brazil, China, India and South Africa have emerged, creating power shifts in international relations that are the primary focus of the second part. Lastly, Part III examines the structural and transnational dimension of inequality patterns, which can be concretized in the rise of globalized national elites and the emergence of multinational networks that transcend the geographical and imaginative borders of nation states.

The objective of this study is to identify and quantify the factors that impact professional career development, with the intention of applying this knowledge to personnel management practices. The goal is to enhance motivation, develop effective socio-economic systems, and facilitate individual career projection within specific companies. This article aims to explore the influencing factors on professional career growth and develop a quantitative methodology for assessing these factors. It recognizes that the employment market has undergone significant changes due to new global challenges, necessitating a re-evaluation of existing methods and models. Method: The study employs a sociological survey methodology to collect data and analyze the results. This approach allows for the quantitative confirmation of hypotheses regarding the influencing factors on career growth. Mathematical justification is used to determine the weighting coefficients of these factors and establish a comprehensive assessment of professional career growth. The research successfully develops and validates an integral coefficient that quantitatively describes the impact of priority factors on career development. The findings suggest that the proposed methodology can be implemented in personnel management practices to improve motivation and foster effective socio-economic systems. Additionally, the approach can be used by individuals to plan their own career development within an organization. Implications of the research: The proposed methodology and approaches have broad applicability across different social groups and specialties. They can be utilized to enhance personnel motivation, develop effective socio-economic systems, and facilitate psychological and communication interactions during career development.
