Playing the Verb: A Literary-Linguistic Perspective on Verb Variation in Early Modern Dutch Prose
Verbs are almost indispensable elements of texts. In the long seventeenth century, a period in which the standards of language were still in flux, they appeared in wide variety, resulting in a type of language variation that has rarely been addressed before: intra-author variation. This dissertation is a collection of four papers that deal with several forms of intra-author variation in verbs from a literary-linguistic perspective. The study argues intra-author variation to be a phenomenon that falls to a large extent in the interface between (socio)linguistics and literary studies. Through the works of four historical individuals, the book opens a window onto the complex political, religious, and cultural context in which authors participated, highlighting the use of verbs as a device to take part in the dynamic society of the long seventeenth century. The study includes the language of authors of a high literary polish and those who had barely any training but for whom texts were an essential means in striving for religious, political and professional impact. An important result is that despite differences in writing skills, education, social position, and professional occupation, all four individuals played the verb. Verbs provided a strategy to facilitate the interpretation of their texts, both in the content and the structure of these texts: the authors used verbs as a demarcating tool, making a text unit stand out and imbue it with meaning in a certain way.

; Duration of civil wars has been an elusive area of study particularly because of the tedious task of disentangling the interplay of actors' agencies, incentives' structures and constraints. This article tackles Syria's civil war that has completed its fifth year with little hope for an end any time soon. I examine a plausible cause leading to its protraction. Namely the formation of a war system, which made the costs of war less than the expected risks of peace giving the local, regional and international actors that are shouldering the costs. The war system approach combines class analysis with system-structural analysis capturing nuances and dynamics of conflict. This article is based in part based on primary sources collected by author in the Summers of 2014 and 2015 in Lebanon.

The voices of history : the historical narrative's polyphony during the first half of the nineteenth century ; Les voix de l'histoire : polyphonie du récit historique français dans la première moitié du XIXe siècle
The history's narrative has been deeply shaked during the first half of the nineteenth century. The historical narrative have to meet new challenges and make a new historiography to institute a modern and a scientific discipline : history. Therefore writers of this period form an historical narrative which includes new democratic procedures for the management of politics : historian have not only to talk about history, but have also to get the voices of history heard, past's voices as well as contemporary's. History becomes a communication. In other words, voices don't only have to get heard : they have to interact each others through time. Like a parliament, times communicate each others and lead the narrative to make a polyphonic history, in which the narrative and auctorial instance – which, in the past, led the rhythm and the coherence of the narrative – stretch themselves. Therefore history weaks itself to become more listenable. The history's narrative of the first half of the nineteenth century becomes thus a wide laboratory for historians to experiment new narrative devices of a democratic history.
