The Institute of Women's Studies in the Arab World (IWSAW), established in 1973, took the whole Arab region as its field of observation and reporting. This far-reaching ambition has sustained the Institute and its publications, especially Al-Raida, ever since. Yet the goal of covering such a large area is a challenging one: the Arab League states - 22 - stretch from Mauritania in the West to the ComorosIslands in the East

She is famous for her radical ideas and statements, and her name is directly associated with the Feminist movement in the Arab world. Dr, Nawal el-Saadawy needs no introduction. When she came to Beirut University College on Wednesday January 22, 1992, the auditorium was a full house and students were standing in the isles. Needless to say, her speech aroused controversy infuriating some while asserting the points of others.

On May 22, 1958, the Lebanese representative at the United Nations presented a letter to the President of the Security Council requesting an urgent meeting of the Council to consider acomplaint by Lebanon in respect to a situation arising from the intervention of the United Arab Republic in the internal affairs of Lebanon, the continuance of which is likely to endanger themaintenance of international peace and security.

The Council of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) held its 27th meeting at the ministerial level in Oslo on October 22, 1962. According to the communiqué released at the end of the meeting, the Ministers reviewed the developments within the Association and noted that the principles of a free trade area were working well in practice and giving satisfaction to both governments and traders in all their countries.

The Trusteeship Council met in a special session on November 22 and decided not to hold its ninth session away from permanent headquarters. The Council also decided that it would consider the annual reports for 1949 and 1950 on the six African trust territories at the ninth session, thus expediting the examination of annual reports and reducing the time interval between submission to, and examination by, the Council.

Following the close of the sixth session of the Council of Foreign Ministers in Paris on June 20, 1949, negotiations for an Austrian treaty were resumed by the Deputies in London. With 22 articles of the treaty still unagreed, the Deputies received a directive on major questions which they were to spell out in detail, reporting to the Council by September 1, 1949, on the draft treaty as a whole.
