The severe crisis of the Mexican economy strongly felt in Mexico City has had curiously little effect in two distant villages: the Indian settlement of Rio Grande, Chiapas, & the market town of Juchitan, Zapotecas, on the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. In both case the local residents stopped expecting assistance from the federal government & returned to an economy geared toward local trade. The positive results fostered a gain in ethnic self-esteem. 22 References. Modified HA
