This study proposes and tests a process model linking deep-level team composition and innovation. Two cognitive styles, sequential thinking and connective thinking, are the deep-level team attributes hypothesized to affect team innovation. Psychological safety and cooperative learning are hypothesized to link cognitive styles and innovation at the team level. Findings from a sample of 83 natural innovation teams with dual-source data indicate that sequential thinking contributes to decreases in team innovation by inhibiting psychological safety, while connective thinking helps improve team innovation through increased cooperative learning. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

from Scythe : Proceedings and Bulletin of the International Data Farming Community, Issue 8 Workshop 20 ; Since 1990, more than 116 cross-border subterranean tunnels have been discovered along the continental US borders, the vast majority between US and Mexico. Tunnels present a low probability, high threat scenario to the United States and are a known means of illicit transportation of drugs, weapons, money and people across the US border. The perpetrators engaged in illicit trafficking are intelligent, tenacious, technologically innovative and they relentlessly seek to continue to expand their profitable enterprise. In today's world, confronted with the realities of terrorism and terroristic objectives, one must also acknowledge that tunnels pose a looming threat to national security. Tunnels are also a persistent military threat. A 2007 operational needs statement (ONS) from US Central Command (CENTCOM) noted that detainees were attempting to tunnel as a means to escape from the internment facilities.

We present a road map for providing course-embedded service-learning team projects as opportunities for undergraduates to practice as service leaders in Asia and beyond. Basic foundations are that projects address authentic problems or needs, partner organization representatives (PORs) indicate availability for ongoing consultation, students receive a complete orientation to service leadership, and project themes align with course curricula. Infrastructure and support involves a bridge of interinstitutional commitment and trust, initial site visits, in-class project consultations, helping teams to form and to elect conveners, providing service leadership reporting templates, and requiring project reports as graded coursework assignments. Potential road blocks include diversion from genuine service needs, POR/data unavailability, free riders, and failure to connect the project to course content. A bridge of student commitment leads to four other ingredients for successful project experiences: a sense of progress toward making a difference, constructive student-POR learning relationships, distributed leadership and initiative-taking, and applying course material to gain insight, guide actions, and frame recommendations. Besides attaining course-level goals, desired outcomes are that students and PORs perceive that the project has delivered good service, and that students can explain their practices and development as service leaders. We present three qualitative case illustrations.

Purpose
– The purpose of this paper is to discuss the structural design of customer teams (CuTes) working with external teams to implement customized information systems (IS). Design consists of theoretically based measures and a first set of real-world, empirical values.


Design/methodology/approach
– A search in the organizational literature suggested that the adhocracy is the preferred structure for CuTes. Adhocracy-like measures were then developed and applied to a high-performance CuTe to reveal a first benchmark for a team's adhocratic design.


Findings
– High-performance CuTes do not necessarily implement the adhocratic principles to the highest degree.


Research limitations/implications
– It is still open whether all the structural measures described here are necessary and sufficient to describe the adhocracy-like structural design of CuTes.


Practical implications
– The CuTe is highlighted as the key incumbent of cooperation with the technology supplier and consultants in terms of project authority and responsibility. A psychometric instrument and real-world values are proposed as a reference for the structural design of high-performance CuTes.


Social implications
– The performance of IS projects is a social concern, since IS products should be aimed at serving people better both inside and outside the organization. Professionals who work in CuTes to develop better IS should receive institutional recognition and management attention.


Originality/value
– This study seems to be the first to discuss the structure of CuTes in customized IS projects from a theoretical and applied perspective.

To be meaningful, all stakeholders need to actively engage in this exchange of expertise. However, despite some funders requiring PPI plans to be included in grant applications, there remains a gap between what is expected and what is delivered. Main body As an exemplar, we reflect on how, in the Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research (AUKCAR), we set out to create a supportive, organised environment with the overarching value of 'keeping patients at the heart of everything we do'. The key has been in planning and creating a suitably funded organisational infrastructure with dedicated PPI researchers along with the development of and expectation to abide by an agreed set of norms and values. Specifically, expecting AUKCAR PhD students and early career researchers to engage with PPI has established a working mode that we hope will last. Regular interactions and proactive Patient Leads increase PPI network cohesion. AbstractThe linking of living rooms across state borders byal‐Jazeera and other pan‐Arab satellite television channels has prompted claims that a 'newArabism' that undermines state nationalism is emerging. Until now, analysts have mostly focused on the 'hot'Arabism in the news coverage of politicised events such as theIsrael–Palestine conflict. This article offers a new dimension by suggesting that as important to satellite television's construction and reproduction ofArab identity is the everyday discourse found in less overtly political programmes such as sport. To demonstrate this, it offers an analysis of al‐Jazeera's coverage of the 2008BeijingOlympics showing how the broadcasts address viewers as a commonArab audience who are simultaneously encouraged to be nationalistic towards their separate nation‐states within a given 'Arab arena' of states with whom they should primarily compete. This suggests that new Arabism should in fact be considered a 'supranationalism', not a revived Arab nationalism as it simultaneously promotes Arab and state identities in tandem. Finally, it aims to expand our understanding of 'everyday nationalism' by adaptingMichaelBillig's theory and methodology of 'banal nationalism' inBritish newspapers to facilitate the study of sport on supranational Arab identity on satellite television.

PurposePast research on team conflict has often conceptualized it as a collective phenomenon whereby members of the same team perceive similar levels of conflict. However, similarity in perspectives can more often be the exception than the norm. As such, the purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of relationship conflict (RC) asymmetry on information elaboration and team performance. Additionally, I introduce a new construct: perception of team RC asymmetry and propose that it strengthens the positive effects of RC asymmetry.Design/methodology/approachA total of 181 MBA students comprising 52 teams participated in the research. Students worked together for the duration of the semester to complete a team project that comprised 45% of their final grade. Surveys were administered at three points in time with performance measured at the end and other focal variables measured at the midpoint. Regression analyses and the PROCESS macro were used to examine a first stage moderated mediation model.FindingsResults showed that RC asymmetry increased elaboration, which, in turn, improved team performance. The link between RC asymmetry and elaboration was moderated by the perception of team RC asymmetry.Originality/valueThe present research shows that to have a fuller understanding of RC one must consider the level of dispersion experienced by team members. Taking this approach has uncovered a way in which RC can actually benefit teams instead of lead to destructive outcomes.

The economic crisis has had an impact at many levels, including education. In Spain, little in-depth research has been done on its effect on the education system and the profile of those most affected. Given the difficulty of accessing reliable information on these issues, our study consists of a survey of representatives of management teams of primary education centers (6-12 years) in the Autonomous Community of Catalonia. This profile of respondents allowed us to obtain indirect knowledge of what is experienced—and in our opinion suffered—in schools, albeit more in some than in others. The results suggest that the crisis has significantly affected families and schools, but especially the most vulnerable families, most often enrolled in public schools. The factors that most influence the existence of inequalities are attributed to families, while less responsibility is assigned to schools and the education system. All this occurs in a context in which a significant reduction of economic and human resources is recognized in part of the system.

We saved trainer time and resources by reducing hands-on practice in training-team protocols without reducing computer-based learning. During 1-h sessions, young adults learned Space Fortress, a video task that has been employed during pilot training. Observers (Experiment 1) learned more in 3 sessions than did test-only trainees. Individuals, dyads, triads, and tetrads (Experiment 2) learned in 3 sessions with no differences in learning or interaction between learning and protocol. Individuals, dyads, and tetrads (Experiment 3) learned in 10 sessions with no differences in learning or interaction between learning and protocol. As predicted by social learning theory, observational learning seems to compensate for hands-on practice efficiently and effectively. Applications of this research have been developed for computer-based group training of airline and air force pilots.
