INTRODUCTION: In recent years, there has been growing discussion to better understand the pathophysiological mechanisms of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and how they may be linked to an increased risk of neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's disease (AD) in veterans. METHODS: Building on that discussion, and subsequent to a special issue of Alzheimer's & Dementia published in June, 2014, which focused on military risk factors, the Alzheimer's Association convened a continued discussion of the scientific community on December 1, 2016. RESULTS: During this meeting, participants presented and evaluated progress made since 2012 and identified outstanding knowledge gaps regarding factors that may impact veterans' risk for later life dementia. DISCUSSION: The following is a summary of the invited presentations and moderated discussions of both the review of scientific understanding and identification of gaps to inform further investigations.

AbstractThis paper explores the main factors for mosquito-borne transmission of the Zika virus by focusing on environmental, anthropogenic, and social risks. A literature review was conducted bringing together related information from this genre of research from peer-reviewed publications. It was observed that environmental conditions, especially precipitation, humidity, and temperature, played a role in the transmission. Furthermore, anthropogenic factors including sanitation, urbanization, and environmental pollution promote the transmission by affecting the mosquito density. In addition, socioeconomic factors such as poverty as well as social inequality and low-quality housing have also an impact since these are social factors that limit access to certain facilities or infrastructure which, in turn, promote transmission when absent (e.g., piped water and screened windows). Finally, the paper presents short-, mid-, and long-term preventative solutions together with future perspectives. This is the first review exploring the effects of anthropogenic aspects on Zika transmission with a special emphasis in Brazil.

An increasing number of clients are requesting green building design due to its potential to provide high-sustainability performance, monetary savings and health benefits to occupants. However, the practice of designing green building projects to meet overarching sustainability criteria is complex, with issues of poor information exchange synthesis. The building information modelling (BIM) process was created to ensure that the cumbersome green building data is exchanged accurately and in a coordinated manner. However, the implementation of the BIM process in green building design practices remains underexplored in the literature and industry practice. Therefore, this study aims to identify the best practices in BIM process implementation in the early stages of green building design. A quantitative research method was adopted; a questionnaire was used to survey 180 architects working in various construction firms in Malaysia. The questionnaire data was analysed using factor analysis to narrow down the long list of factors (best practices) into a small number of components. The results highlighted the best approaches in BIM process implementation in green building design practices: (1) Selection of a well-trained and competent design team, (2) Use of software with high interoperability to ensure exchange of accurate information, (3) Development of a standard method for BIM process implementation in green building design and (4) Timely identification of critical decision points. The research outcome will enlighten construction professionals on the best practices in implementing the BIM process in green building design, thereby allowing them to deliver building projects with high-sustainability performance.
There is growing understanding that the environment plays an important role both in the transmission of antibiotic resistant pathogens and in their evolution. Accordingly, researchers and stakeholders world-wide seek to further explore the mechanisms and drivers involved, quantify risks and identify suitable interventions. There is a clear value in establishing research needs and coordinating efforts within and across nations in order to best tackle this global challenge. At an international workshop in late September 2017, scientists from 14 countries with expertise on the environmental dimensions of antibiotic resistance gathered to define critical knowledge gaps. Four key areas were identified where research is urgently needed: 1) the relative contributions of different sources of antibiotics and antibiotic resistant bacteria into the environment; 2) the role of the environment, and particularly anthropogenic inputs, in the evolution of resistance; 3) the overall human and animal health impacts caused by exposure to environmental resistant bacteria; and 4) the efficacy and feasibility of different technological, social, economic and behavioral interventions to mitigate environmental antibiotic resistance. ; The workshop was organized and supported by the Joint Programming Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance (JPIAMR), the Swedish Research Council (SRC) and the Centre for Antibiotic Resistance Research at University of Gothenburg, Sweden (CARe). Xylazine is a myorelaxant with sedative and analgesic effects that can be used in dogs and cats. The acupuncture point denominated Yin Tang has sedative effects when stimulated on animals. Thus, the objective of the present study was to evaluate if xylazine in subdoses administered to dogs and cats in the Yin Tang acupoint has sedative effects as well as the therapeutic dose. Six dogs and six cats were used. The study comprised of four steps. In the first step (S1), the therapeutic dose was administered intramuscularly (IM). Second step (S2) was performed using one-tenth (1/10) of the dose used in S1 intramuscularly. In the third step (S3), the xylazine was applied in the acupoint Yin Tang, at the same dose used in S2. In the fourth stage (S4), physiological solution was administered in Yin Tang acupoint in the same volume administered in S3. The presence or absence of decubitus, somnolence, and other signs indicative of sedation were investigated in all steps and all animals. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups (p < 0.05). It was concluded that xylazine administered in subdoses in the Yin Tang acupoint in dogs and cats promotes sedation similar to the therapeutic dose administered intramuscularly.

Introduced Marine Pests (IMP, = non-indigenous marine species) prevention, early detection and risk-based management strategies have become the priority for biosecurity operations worldwide, in recognition of the fact that, once established, the effective management of marine pests can rapidly become cost prohibitive or impractical. In Western Australia (WA), biosecurity management is guided by the " Western Australian Prevention List for Introduced Marine Pests " which is a policy tool that details species or genera as being of high risk to the region. This list forms the basis of management efforts to prevent introduction of these species, monitoring efforts to detect them at an early stage, and rapid response should they be detected. It is therefore essential that the species listed can be rapid and confidently identified and discriminated from native species by a range of government and industry stakeholders. Recognising that identification of these species requires very specialist expertise which may be in short supply and not readily accessible in a regulatory environment, and the fact that much publicly available data is not verifiable or suitable for regulatory enforcement, the WA government commissioned the current project to collate a reference collection of these marine pest specimens. In this work, we thus established collaboration with researchers worldwide in order to source representative specimens of the species listed. Our main objective was to build a reference collection of taxonomically vouchered specimens and subsequently to generate species-specific DNA barcodes suited to supporting their future identification. To date, we were able to obtain specimens of 75 species (representative of all but four of the pests listed) which have been identified by experts and placed with the WA Government Department of Fisheries and, where possible, in accessible museums and institutions in Australasia. The reference collection supports the fast and reliable taxonomic and molecular identification of marine pests in WA and constitutes a valuable resource for training of stakeholders with interest in IMP recognition in Australia. The reference collection is also useful in supporting the development of a variety of DNA-based detection strategies such as real-time PCR and metabarcoding of complex environmental samples (e.g. biofouling communities). The Prevention List is under regular review to ensure its continued relevance and that it remains evidence and risk-based. Similarly, its associated reference collection also remains to some extent a work in progress. In recognition of this fact, this report seeks to provide details of this continually evolving information repository publicly available to the biosecurity management community worldwide
