"Social scientists have long known that political beliefs bias the way they think about, understand, and interpret the world around them. In this volume, scholars from social psychology and related fields explore the ways in which social scientists themselves have allowed their own political biases to influence their research. These biases may influence the development of research hypotheses, the design of studies and methods and materials chosen to test hypotheses, decisions to publish or not publish results based on their consistency with one's prior political beliefs, and how results are described and dissemination to the popular press. The fact that these processes occur within academic disciplines, such as social psychology, that strongly skew to the political left compounds the problem. Recent findings show an apparent erosion in the United States over the post-war years of 'social capital' understood as the propensity of individuals to associate together on a regular basis, to trust one another, and to engage in community affairs. This article examines the British case for similar trends, finding no equivalent erosion. It proposes explanations for the resilience of social capital in Britain, rooted in educational reform, the transformation of the class structure, and government policy. It concludes by drawing some general lessons from the British case that stress the importance of the distributive dimensions of social capital and the impact that governments can have on it. To test if the social incidence of Vietnam casualties was related to race or SC, 110 Cook County (Ill) communities were analyzed along 5 variables. The casualty rate of each community was the dependent variable & the independent variables were: (1) size of the age-eligible M population, (2) % of blacks in each community, (3) estimate of the SE level of each community, & (4) a measure of military participation. Multiple regression technique was used to analyze the data. When all other variables were controlled, there was a nonsignificant direct relationship between racial composition & number of casualties. The relationship between SE level of the community & the number of officer casualties is significantly positive. It appears that the military assignment process relied on criteria highly contingent on SE origin to channel persons from Lc backgrounds into combat susceptible positions, & thus SC & not race is significantly related to wartime casualty. 3 Tables, 1 Figure. PurposeThe purpose of this research is to investigate how postpartum mothers conduct self-disclosure on social media may obtain social support and therefore improve their depressive mood.Design/methodology/approachThe authors extract variables of self-disclosure by manual coding postpartum mothers' 835 posts from a parenting social media in China. The ordinary least squares model and the binary logistic regression model are used to test the proposed hypotheses.FindingsThe study suggests that both mothers' superficial level disclosure and personal level disclosure positively affect online social support received, and the effect of personal level disclosure on social support is much greater than that of superficial level disclosure. Online social support received is related to the content of the post and reduces mothers' depressive mood. The authors further find that the association between personal level disclosure and depressive mood is fully mediated by social support.Research limitations/implicationsThe data are collected from a parenting social network. Although it is the major parenting social media with the most users in China, the generalizability of this model and the findings to other social media need additional research.Practical implicationsThis study offers implications for researchers and practitioners with regard to social media uses and impacts, which also has important implications for policy and interventions for the mental health of mothers.Originality/valueThis paper makes theoretical contributions to the literature of social penetration theory and social support by (1) dividing self-disclosure into superficial level disclosure and personal level disclosure according to the intimacy of self-disclosure; (2) empirically investigating the direct effect of online self-disclosure on social support and the mediating effect of social support between online self-disclosure and mothers' depressive mood.

Argues that the pattern of growth in the social sciences has been considerably affected by over-exposure and integration into Anglo-Saxon social scientific tradition.
