This commentary examines how the open data movement is revolutionizing the diverse practices of journalism, government communication and public relations. The author defines open data as the future of communicating knowledge, and explains how it is challenging communication professionals in ways that previous incarnations of the World Wide Web have not before. The author describes the evolution of web services tracing the differences between Web 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0. Lyndon State College's (LSC) participation in the America's Future Initiative on the U.S. national debt, in association with Public Agenda, began with a grant application for funding to participate. After being awarded funding, as the sole political scientist, I was selected with approval by the administration to attend the September 11 to 13, 2008, opening conference in Washington, DC. Flying into Washington, DC, on September 11 surely was a sign of commitment. At the conference, participants were schooled on the initiative by George Mehaffy of the American Democracy Project, Andrew Yarrow of Public Agenda, the Concord Coalition's Diane Rogers, and Stuart Butler from the Heritage Foundation. As a political scientist, I was well-aware of much of what was presented, but to hear differing perspectives and review the data and presentation materials was an excellent experience.

The author responds to Don Herzog's (2010) review of a series of his books concerning democracy and political theory. The author accuses Herzog of misunderstanding one of his major points, that democracy is a blend of political ideas, institutions and practices in a proliferating variety of historical settings. The article criticizes Herzog for finding fault with the author's methodology without suggesting a better approach to tackling the subject. In the present article the author makes an eloquent inquiry regarding the current economic and financial crisis and its relationship with the classical labour theory of value. The author realized a full synopsis about economical, social and military evolution of America after the Second World War until nowadays, stressing out the assertion that "the military power is depending on the economic one".As a conclusion, the author presents some of the key actions and policies strongly needed for The United States in order to remain the preeminent superpower of the world in the 21st century.

This paper presents the writing of an inmate, Whispers, who participated in a writing project taught by the author at San Quentin State Prison. The inmate was a student in a class called Write Your Life and it was in that class that he wrote Storm on the Horizon, a story he would author/re-author three times. Through the process of re-authoring he creates a story situated in the real world that ultimately helps him in rendering new meaning from his lived experience. Re-authoring his story allowed Whispers to explore varying perspectives that succeed in making his experience comprehensible.

The author analyses the X UNO Congress resolution about preventing crimes and treating with infringers of the law and also Russian legislation. As the result the author tries to formulate the conceptual darection of preventing crimes, among them computer crimes.

In the final chapter of the collection, the author suggests that an alternative research agenda should be developed, one that focuses on generating information with "practical relevance to conflict prevent." After discussing the weaknesses of the current orthodoxy on violent conflict and conflict prevention in sub-Saharan Africa, the author addresses the major challenges faced by conflict prevention. Finally, the author concludes by exploring why a focus on violence and agency rather than conflict and cause is necessary, and how the tenants of cultural studies and post-modern sociology can be applied.

In the first pail of the paper the author has presented the theory of diffusion of innovations from the American rural sociologist Everett Rogers. This theory represents the synonym for the research of this area. The author considers that theory as useful in theoretical and methodological sense for the explanation and research of the process of diffusion of innovations in rural areas and agriculture. In the second part of the paper, the author reviews the mentioned approach and from the broader sociological aspect tries to expand the understanding of the process of diffusion of innovations.

In this article, the author reflects on some of the difficulties encountered when conducting cross-cultural qualitative research. The article begins with a description of a focus group study that researched how feminist women define sexual liberation. The author then examines some of the issues inherent when including participants from different countries, races, ages, and sexual orientation. The findings point to insights about research issues including language, research methods, age, race, sexuality, traditional practices, and cultural norms. Lastly, the author encourages dialogue as a way to address issues of difference and increase collective consciousness.

The author examines the impact of mandatory minimum sentencing on Aboriginal peoples in Canada. Emphasis is placed on the recently enacted mandatory minimum sentencing provisions for firearms offenses. The author argues that the enactment of such provisions are inconsistent with Parliament's objectives as reflected in section 718.2(e) of the Criminal Code which requires sentencing judges to pay "particular attention to the circumstances of Aboriginal offenders." In addition, the author explores preliminary arguments to support a finding that mandatory minimum sentences applied to Aboriginal offenders violate sections 12 and 15 of the Charter.

The author details the conflicts of interest facing individual investigators and research institutions and describes the current mechanisms, primarily focused at the relationship between the investigator and the research institution, to regulate these conflicts. The author finds these mechanisms insufficient and believes that the best approach is not to regulate conflicts, but to abolish them. The author acknowledges, however, that there is a lack of political will in an abolitionist approach. He proposes, therefore, institutional review board oversight at the level of the relationship between researcher and individual subjects as the next best solution.
