In this paper the author provides a sympathetic critique of open Marxism. In particular the author suggests that while open Marxists successfully show how social forms reflect the contradiction between capital and labour, they do not at present demonstrate with equal insight how social forms also refract this contradiction in their own unique and qualitative way. This leads the author to insist that a genuinely open approach to Marxist theory must seek to develop dialectical categories in a manner that can account for the refracted nature of each social form. His argument is developed through the concepts of abstraction, social form, crisis, regulation and discourse.

This article examines the political reign of Maurice Duplessis in light of discussions on populism. The author distinguishes two forms of populism, plebiscitarian & identitarian. He then analyzes election speeches & legislative practices of the Duplessis governments toward farmers. He demonstrates that plebiscitarian populism is to be found during election campaigns, while the identitarian form is less important. The author shows that plot theory crucial in identitarian populism is absent from Duplesssis's political speeches & practices. In addition, there is not, in Duplessis, a will to change Quebec's political framework profoundly. The author emphasizes the importance of studying both local and extralocal social ties found in community areas of the metropolis. Knowledge of temporal trends in these ties is limited, but both are important in the metropolis, leading to the mediate community: communities that often have many endogenous ties but also have strong links to the larger world. The author also suggests that local and extralocal ties should be subdivided on the basis of whether they are instrumental or expressive. Using data from previous community studies, the author illustrates possible relationships of local and extralocal social ties to community culture, including efforts to protect the community.

Based on an analysis of the globalization process, its characteristics, its effects on the economy and on politics, as well as the challenges it presupposes, the author reflects on and makes proposals for the education diplomats need in Latin America in the post-Cold War era. According to the author, diplomatic academies have to include courses on the characteristics of a globalized economy in their study plans, but without losing sight of political science and international relations studies, among other subjects that create the theoretical base for an understanding of the globalization process. The article aims to analyze the sociological insights of Ignas Šlapelis, a Lithuanian art criticist, art historian and a pedagogue. The author argues that Ignas Šlapelis develops important sociological ideas to understand the cultural situation of Lithuania in the first half of the twentieth century. The author attempts to reconstruct the perspective of Ignas Šlapelis about the functions of art and its role in society. It is claimed that Ignas Šlapelis develops his sociology by discussing the role of art in the context of education. The author of the article suggests Ignas Šlapelis to be held as a founding father of Lithuanian sociology of art.

This article discusses one approach to using the Internet in a required MBA course. As a novice with no formal course work or training on the Internet, the author decided to undertake a risky experiment. First, the author presents the advantages and disadvantages of employing emerging instructional technologies. Then, the author assesses the successes and failures of integrating the Internet in an MBA course. The analysis includes the observation of student electronic postings and the solicitation of their feedback in various ways. The article concludes by offering general advice to other instructors contemplating use of the Internet to reduce their frustrations and disappointments.

After identifying diversity, integration of business disciplines, globalization of course contents, and infusion of critical thinking skills as four objectives, the author designated a new curriculum with several new courses and identified a number of integrative experiences that allow instructors to demonstrate to the students the linkages existing among the business courses. The author discusses the curriculum revision process and focuses on how an expert, cross-disciplinary team designed and implemented its first course called Gateway. The author also reflects on the revision process. Even without curriculum revisions, any business school can benefit from designing imaginative integrative experiences.

The author applies to literary texts some of the parameters used in reference to questions of perspective in the visual arts. Disagreeing with Erwin Panofsky, who considers perspective a "symbolic form," the author sees it as a device of utterance and thus a generator of signs susceptible to semiotic study. Unlike many scholars, the author believes not that the enunciator's perspective is transferred onto the work, but that the perspective of the work is imposed on the enunciator. The perspective of each genre situates the enunciator in a specific place in relation to the world and shapes him or her differentially as subject.

The author portrays the indigenous populations who engage in subsistence digging of sites in Latin America both as a means of supporting themselves economically and as a way of connecting themselves to their past and their ancestors who left the buried remains as a type of gift to their descendants. The article is also critical of the mainstream archaeologists, who, according to the author, hide behind the veil of scientific objectivity. Finally, the author juxtaposes the varying competing interests, particularly against the backdrop of denial of basic human and economic rights in these regions, and poses the question, to whom should these cultural remains belong?

(Response) In a rebuttal to Joel Rich, the author argues that increased use of 401(k) plans has been good for both employers and employees. Citing a recent KPMG Peat Marwick survey, the author points out that the vast majority of 401 (k) plan participants still have low levels of savings. Therefore, employers are unlikely to lose many employees to early retirement as a result of inflated 401(k) accounts. Nevertheless, the author concludes, employers may find their retirement plans becoming less effective as a retention tool; they may have to find other ways to influence employees' job choices.

The author develops an analytical framework for making cross-national comparisons, referred to as modes of governance, that centers on the study of how governing coalitions are built and maintained. He lays out the theoretical framework for modes of governance, which draws upon regime theory but goes beyond its conception of power structures. A primary concern is understanding the underlying causes of urban governing realignments and their impact on local strategic decision making. To illustrate the approach, the author compares politics of development in Boston, Massachusetts, and Bristol, England. Finally, the author considers the theoretical implications of the Boston/Bristol comparison.

Newspapers believe the ethnic composition of newsrooms should mirror the society that journalists seek to understand and record. Yet little research has addressed how readers react to the ethnicity of a journalist. In two experiments manipulating ethnicity in bylines and good news/ bad news treatment, an Hispanic author was highly likely to be associated in readers' minds with a glowing article about Hispanics, but was unlikely to be credited with authorship of a positive article about Anglos. The Hispanic author was evaluted no differently than was the Anglo-American author of comparable skill. Negative treatments of news were regarded as better stories than the positive treatments.

The author states that the social work profession is not sufficiently involved with Head Start. Data from a representative sample of Head Start programs shows the minimal role professional social workers play with Head Start even when ample financial resources to hire BSWs or MSWs are available. Evidence suggests, however, that Head Start is open to increased professional social work involvement. The author presents reasons social work professionals are underrepresented in Head Start and recommendations for increasing professional involvement and influence. The author also discusses the history and current status of Head Start, including a thorough description of Head Start's social service component.

The author believes that anti-Americanism has been rising in China since 1989 among ordinary people, particularly among young people. Anti-Americanism in China is understood to refer to those feelings of disapproval, hostility, or condemnation that are found among Chinese people against American foreign policy, society, culture and values. The author examines why and how the anti-Americanism was aroused in the Chinese leaders and how the official media incited anti-Americanism in the ordinary people. The author also looks at the shaping and the actions of anti-Beijing sentiments on the part of the USA, leading to the rhetoric of anti-Americanism in China. (DÜI-Sen)

The author takes a critical look at the plan of General Constand Viljoen, leader of the right wing Afrikaner Freedom Front (FF) to develop a "Food Corridor" in Southern Africa. According to the author, the people will lose their land if this plan is carried through. The plan is supported by the SACADA (South African Chamber of Agricultural Development), an umbrella organization which includes also several right wing organizations, among them the FF. SACADA has plans to invest in Mozambique, Zaire, Zambia and Angola. The author notes that the international community is now providing support to a racist Afrikaner development organization (SACADA).
