Freedom House holds that small archipelago states such as Vanuatu, Kiribatiand São Tomé and Príncipe are high-ranking democracies. This article sets out to explore andanalyse how the political systems of these three states function in their everyday practice, andto understand whether the correlation between smallness on the one hand, and democracy onthe other, is borne out in political practice. Our study shows that many processes andprocedures that we associate with that of a liberal democracy are indeed present in the cases. However, we also show that a number of procedures and occurrences that point to the contraryare likewise present. These include issues that pertain to the lack of actual separation of powers, lack of female political representation, friendship corruption, and nepotism. We propose furtherinquiry to increase our understanding as to whether these issues are related to the smallpopulation size of these countries. ; Large Lessons from Small Cases: Façade or Democracy in Kiribati, Vanuatu and São Tomé and Príncipe?
What is the impact of the IT revolution on the political and social Arab landscape? In terms of blgging, most of the many discussions about the effects, on the short and/or the long range, of the new information technologies in the Arab world, focuss on the more or less obviously political blogs. Nonetheless, the real consequences of the blog revolution in the Arab countries are not necesseraly to be found in the classical political realm but in the many side-effects of an merging public sphere.

This book claims that artificial intelligence (AI) may affect our freedom at work, in our daily life, and in the political sphere. The author provides a philosophical framework to help make sense of and govern the ethical and political impact of AI in these domains. AI presents great opportunities and risks, raising the question of how to reap its potential benefits without endangering basic human and societal values. The author identifies three major risks for human freedom. First, AI offers employers new forms of control of the workforce, opening the door to new forms of domination and exploitation. Second, it may reduce our capacity to remain in control of and responsible for our decisions and actions, thereby affecting our free will and moral responsibility. Third, it may increase the power of governments and tech companies to steer the political debate, thereby affecting the possibility of a free and inclusive political participation. The author claims that it is still possible to promote human freedom in our interactions with AI. This requires designing AI systems that help promote workers' freedom, strengthen human control and responsibility, and foster a free, active, and inclusive democratic participation. Human Freedom in the Age of AI will be of interest to scholars and graduate students working on the ethics of technology, philosophy of technology, political philosophy, design, and artificial intelligence.

This semi-academic work on the collapse of Malaysia's Pakatan Harapan government is written from a sectoral security perspective. Its basic idea is derived from my articles published in The New Straits Times from August 2018 to August 2021 which focused on the PH government and its political alliance, their incompatibilities, weaknesses. vulnerabilities and insecurities. This approach enables this book to examine the fall of the PH administration from the perspectives of ideological, political, identity and economic insecurities in the PH era and their ultimate impacts on the PH alliance and the PH government. This approach also enables this book to establish that the rise of the PH government was accompanied by a new political identity which was different from the political identity of the Perikatan-Barisan Nasional government which ruled Malaysia for over six decades since Independence in 1957. These dissimilarities had caused certain Malaysia's citizenry, particularly a section of the Peribumi-Muslim community, to perceive this new political identity as unable to protect their future as Malaysia's biggest national groups and the sons of the soil, as well as the biggest followers of Islam in the PH era. This perception led to the emergence of trust deficit in the PH government and on Bersatu as the only Peribumi-based party in the PH alliance.
"This book explores the complex and multi-layered relationships between democracy and play, presenting important new theoretical and empirical research. It builds new paradigmatic bridges between philosophical enquiry and fields of application across the arts, political activism, children's play, education and political science. Play and Democracy addresses four principal themes. Firstly, it explores how the relationship between play and democracy can be conceptualized and how it is mirrored in questions of normativity, ethics and political power. Secondly, it examines different aspects of play in urban spaces, such as activism, aesthetic experience, happenings, political carnivals and performances. Thirdly, it offers examples and analyses of how playful artistic performances can offer democratic resistance to dominant power. And finally, it considers the paradoxes of play in both developing democratic sensibilities and resisting power in education. These themes are explored and interrogated in chapters covering topics such as aesthetic practice, pedagogy, diverse forms of activism, and urban experience, where play and playfulness become arenas in which to create the possibility of democratic practice and change. Adding extra depth to our understanding of the significance of play as a political, cultural and social power, this book is fascinating reading for any serious student or researcher with an interest in play, philosophy, politics, sociology, arts, sport or education"--
Since the first elections of 1994, the South African constitution officially guarantees and promotes a wide range of political and civil rights and institutionalizes the separation of powers with an independent judiciary. This has made South Africa a political symbol of change, hope and democracy in Africa and around the world. However, since the introduction of free and fair electoral processes and with ANC dominating the presidency and the parliamentary seats, the political scene has been scattered by democratic challenges. South Africa remains a flawed democracy, combining free elections and respect for basic civil liberties with problems of governance, an underdeveloped political culture, and low levels of public participation. Today, South Africa stands at a crossroads. While the constitutional democracy has survived, South African democracy seems to have weakened by state capture, internal ANC implosion, corruption, societal polarization, social exclusion, xenophobia, and threats of state economic bankruptcy. South Africa faces growing discontent symbolized in intensified societal and political debates, protests and demonstrations providing for the question if this is a sign of dissatisfied citizens demanding deeper democracy or activities questioning the established constitutional democracy from an anti-democratic, populist, and radical point of view. South Africas Democracy at the Crossroads explores the question; what are the challenges to future democratization in South Africa?
