Imagine a fourfold table in which one dimension is "present versus past" and the other "exotic versus home." Traditionally, social and cultural anthropology's domain has been the exotic's present and history's domain the home's past. A third box, the home's present, has been occupied by sociology, while the fourth, the exotic's past, has usually been the province of anthropologists too because other disciplines—with the exception, perhaps, of ethnohistorians—are usually even less interested in exotic peoples' past than in their present. These domains are now in flux. I argue, in what follows, that only when the oversimplified ideas about time and space that have created them are seriously questioned will anthropology find a secure "place" in social science history.

Susan Miller argues that the program has significantly helped the victims who chose to face their offenders in very concrete, transformative ways. Likewise, the offenders have also experienced positive changes in their lives in terms of creating greater accountability and greater victim empathy. Review of critics of the logical positivist description of scientific method & academic accounts of policy making suggests that analogies & metaphors are central features of the social-scientific enterprise. Critics of metaphorical thinking in social science argue that these "devices" are used uncritically & obscure reality because they are too intuitive & too interpretative to be considered scientific. But this approach is probably dangerous because it assumes that metaphors, analogies, & models have only scientific consequences. As devices of thinking, they also have effects on public life as well. Assessment of analogies & metaphors must depend on their implications for reforming the world. At issue is the question of whether policy sciences use analogies & metaphors in a responsible fashion & whether policy scientists are willing to take responsibility for the world they imagine. 65 References. This research methods case explores issues encountered, and considerations necessary, in pursuing academic research employing social media platforms. I will discuss the overarching concept of social media use in academe, which includes data mining, promoting research records, broadening audiences, and pursuing independent research. I will then discuss the use of social media for the purpose of conducting independent research and deriving primary data from that undertaking. Social media present potentially powerful tools in the conduct of academic research, especially for reaching groups with common interests solely or primarily bound by virtual bonds. It enables a researcher to greatly expand the reach of their study, and to do so in a very cost-effective manner. As discussed in this research case, the use of social media does present unique challenges that must be considered and addressed prior to engaging in a study. Unlike a traditional approach to research, your study population is often at a distance which makes interfacing with them much more challenging. In addition, in preparation to conduct your study, it is important to meet with your institution's Institutional Review Board (IRB) well in advance to clarify expectations regarding the necessary documentation needed to receive approval of your research. Once IRB officials are clear on your purpose and the methodology you intend to use, the guidance they provide will be quite helpful in fulfilling the administrative requirements necessary for the institution to sanction your study. Along with potential issues associated with the IRB, this research methods case also discusses some other complications of the use of social media, including difficulties in establishing population sizes and reporting response rates.

The impact of the network of journals through which scholars disseminate & accredit their ideas is compared to the prestige hierarchy of journals in sociology & political science. A comparison of prestige rankings of journals with Social Science Citation Index impact scores suggests a nonlinear relationship; many reputed "top" journals receive inordinate credit & many new & less prestigious journals receive less credit than their impact warrants. 2 Tables, 14 References. ObjectiveThis article analyzes how the extremely authoritarian nature of the Iraqi regime affected scholarship of Iraq and shows how regime opacity and brutality constrain social science research.MethodsThe article examines scholarly output on Iraq using qualitative and quantitative metrics from the Saddam Hussein era and the post‐2003 period after his removal from power.ResultsThe article finds a dramatic increase in the quantity of publications on Iraq after 2003 and a shift toward more nomothetic, theory‐building research involving Iraq. New forms of research on Iraq, including field research, embedded observation, interviews, surveys, and archival research, also became prevalent after 2003.ConclusionThe progress of social science research depends both on regime transparency and regime stability. Researchers can adjust techniques to address the absence of transparency or stability, but without the combination of both, the overall venture suffers.

The first volume presents a collection of exciting papers exploring several new areas of disability research. The contributions include: examination of the media representation of disability and coverage of disability policy issues which gives an understanding of the far reaching impact of the fourth estate; an historical analysis of the correspondence between the identifier of Down syndrome and Darwin that lends insights into the development of interpretations of mental retardation particularly Down syndrome as a throwback to the more primitive nature of man; analysis of hospital discharge data which demonstrates that persons with chronic conditions and impairments are more likely than those without to need hospitalization for injuries resulting from violence; and an overview of voting behavior among persons with disabilities. Subsequent volumes will focus on specific subjects related to disability issues.

Abstract
Criminology and propaganda studies have both substantially influenced political, public and commercial thought yet not as a co-ordinated, embedded twine. Propaganda studies identify how narratives are constructed, conveyed and embedded within public and political discourses. To enhance existing debates, this article stirs the criminological cauldron with critical insights from propaganda analyses. Criminology is an evolving crucible, a gravitational black hole that imbues, harnesses and inculcates diverse perspectives in the pursuit of originality, criticality and creativity. By drawing on historical and contemporary propaganda scholarship we aim to enrich criminological theory, policy and practice. Our intention is not to critique, supplant or subvert existing criminological discourse but to invigorate it with the proponents, and prospects of propaganda studies.

A questionaire-survey devised to measure & indicate the trend of contemporary expert opinion on the relationship of ethics to econ's is reported & discussed briefly. 49 at random selected econ'ts & 20 philosophers answered 3 objective-type questions & 1 subjective one, ('Do you make statements with explicit socio-ethical implications in teaching?'). A variety of comments added by the R's are quoted. They verify the results of the tabulation of the checked answers. The most frequent qualifications to assenting that an econ'st as such may make normative statements were: (1) he may, assuming he has competence or adequate speial knowledge in the field; & (2) he may, assuming further that he does not give such pronouncements as absolutes. The smallness in the sample indicates the need for caution in interpreting the results. Replies were anonymous & are probably valid. The study indicates that those who hold the position that the econ'st is not to offer any advice are definitely in the minority today among econ'ts & philosophers in the US. M. Maxfield.
