AbstractUsing data for 22 sub‐Saharan African (SSA) countries, this paper investigates the effects of public debt on economic growth in SSA countries covering the period 1990–2021. Relying upon the estimation of Panel Smooth Transition Regression and generalized method of moments method, our findings offer strong evidence that public debt nonlinearly impacts economic growth. More specifically, there exists a threshold beyond which public debt exerts a negative effect on growth. These results can be used to formulate economic recommendations that the public authorities could implement to improve public debt management and maintain stable economic growth.

Seit 2021 werden (Ober-)Bürgermeister*innen und Landrät*innen im Rahmen des 'Kommunalen Monitoring (KoMo)' zu ihren Erfahrungen mit Hass, Hetze und Gewalt gegen ihre Person im Amtsalltag befragt. Der Fokus liegt dabei auf dem individuellen Erleben und Wahrnehmen von feindseligen Äußerungen und Angriffen. Die Forschungsstelle Terrorismus/Extremismus des Bundeskriminalamts führt das Monitoring gemeinsam mit den kommunalen Spitzenverbänden (DST, DLT, DStGB) im Rahmen des Verbundprojektes MOTRA durch. Hierbei handelt es sich um eine längsschnittlich (6-Monat Turnus) angelegte bundesweite Online-Befragung aller kommunalpolitischen Amtsträger*innen. Das Hauptziel der Untersuchung besteht darin, die gegenwärtigen Vorkommnisse von Anfeindungen gegen Amtsträger*innen in Deutschland umfassend zu erfassen und darzustellen sowie den (Nicht-) Betroffenen eine Plattform zu bieten, um sich mitzuteilen und entsprechend das Gefühl zu vermitteln, gehört und wahrgenommen zu werden. Die in diesem Spotlight aufgeführten Ergebnisse beruhen auf der Frühjahrsbefragung '23 (Referenzzeitraum: November '22 - April '23).

Can the act of assigning a score to someone constitute a decision? This, in essence, is the question the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) had to answer in Case C-634/21. And the Court's answer is yes, following in the footsteps of the Advocate General's opinion on the case. Rendered on 7 December, this ruling was eagerly awaited as it was the first time the Court had the opportunity to interpret the notorious Article 22 of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) prohibiting decisions "based solely on automated processing".

AbstractTo better understand sensitive situations in children's lives, it is important to engage them in research. This article reports the initial findings of a study on children's grief. Grief map data were collected during interviews with 8‐ to 9‐year‐old children (N = 22). The aim was to explore children's perceptions of the family and close relationships that help them in moments of grief, and the relationships related to the cause of these emotions. The grief maps were analysed using content and thematic analyses. The results of the study demonstrate the deeply relational nature of children's grief.
