Western response to development co-operation in Southern Africa: the case of SADCC

Paper presented to a seminar on African response to imperialism, University of Zimbabwe, Harare, 22 - 24 April 1987 ; The Southern Africa Development Co-ordination Conference (SADCC) was institutionalised in April 1980 and consists of nine member countries, namely, Angola, Botswana, Lesotho,. Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. It aims primarily at co-ordinating the regional members' development in such areas as industry, agriculture, transport, communications, energy, and other related fields. Support for political liberation in the entire region is among its general objectives.
