"Seit seiner Gründung 1923 hat sich der Rundfunk in Deutschland wie auch in anderen hochindustrialisierten Ländern rasch ausgebreitet. Schon in den dreißiger Jahren gehörte er in Deutschland, aber beispielsweise auch in England, ganz abgesehen von den USA, zum Alltag vieler Familien. Deutschland erreichte 1941 mit 15 Millionen angemeldeten Hörfunkgeräten einen ersten Höhepunkt in der Rundfunkversorgung. Nach einem Einbruch, bei Kriegsende, gab es im Hörfunk 1965 rund 17,8 Millionen angemeldeter Hörfunkgeräte und 11,3 Millionen angemeldeter Fernsehgeräte bei ca. 22 Millionen Privathaushalten. Die Zahlen sind seitdem weiter angestiegen und liegen zur Zeit bei 25 Millionen Fernsehempfängern, wobei sich hinter diesen Angaben auch soziale Verschiebungen (Erhöhung der Zahl der Haushalte) verbergen. Demoskopische Erhebungen berechtigen zu dem Schluß, daß bei publikumswirksamen Sendungen mit über 50 Prozent Einschaltquote mehr als die Hälfte der erwachsenen Bevölkerung in der Bundesrepublik - quer durch alle sozialen Schichten - ein und dasselbe Fernsehprogramm anschaut, etwa eine Trivialserie wie die 'Schwarzwaldklinik'." The metatheoretical suppositions underlying Emile Durkheim's theory of the social are investigated. Issues treated include: (1) the problem of establishing scientific rigor in studying the social, while distinguishing social from natural science; (2) determining & defining the objects of empirical study; (3) the problem of induction & abstraction in science; (4) epistemological & ontological problems of objectivity; & (5) types of social causality. It is argued that, in the case of his study of suicide, Durkheim's insistence that sociology's point of departure be empirical data is contradicted by his tacit presupposition of social cohesion. 22 References. This article uses a 22‐industry breakdown of the UK manufacturing sector to examine the effects on employment of various changes in the structure, but not the overall level, of exports, imports, and trade balances within an input‐output framework. The analyses reported relate to greater specialisation in trade, faster structural adjustment and import substitution. The results show both the industrial pattern and overall net effect of employment changes and the distinction is made between the direct employment consequences of changes in the trade balances of the industries concerned and induced employment changes via derived demands for intermediate inputs.

SUMMARYForty‐five patients aged 3 to 22 who have handicapping conditions were examined to determine their oral hygiene leveis and periodontal treatment needs. This study shows that oral hygiene leveis for males and the older population were higher. Periodontal treatment needs were highly correlated to oral hygiene, and were much higher for males and older age groups.Various aspects were discussed and it was concluded that primary prevention is an immediate, although a partial solution. However, new aids and antibacterial solutions should be further investigated in this population to simplify plaque removal.

The President of the ICRC, Mr. Alexandre Hay, accompanied by Mr. Jean Hoefliger, delegate-general of the ICRC for the Middle East, and by Mr. S. Die Zielsetzungen des Übereinkommens sind in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland weitgehend erfüllt. Allerdings weicht das innerstaatliche Recht von den Einzelvorschriften des Übereinkommens in einigen Punkten ab. Eine Änderung des geltenden Rechts wird nicht erwogen. Von einer Ratifizierung des Übereinkommens soll deshalb abgesehen werden." "Die Empfehlung konkretisiert das Übereinkommen und enthält zum Teil weitergehende detaillierte Vorschläge in bezug auf zu ergreifende Maßnahmen auf dem Gebiet des Arbeitsschutzes und der Arbeitsumwelt. The F family used to live in Tel al-Zaatar. When the camp was destroyed in 1976, Sobhia F lost her husband and one of her sons. She then went to live in Shatila with her remaining children. Today, Sobhia F is still living in Shatila with what is left of her family: her eldest daughter, Wasfia, who has three children, her other three daughters, Khadija, who is 22, Sawson, 12, Zeinab, II, and the only boy who was not killed, Adel, aged 7. Her mother-in-law was present throughout the interview. Three generations of women gave their testimonies.

The American Agriculture Movement (AAM) emerged in 1977 as a Mc farm protest against low prices for agricultural commodities. Its activities were closely identified with a farm strike that never came about. AAM survived nonetheless & achieved some successes. An analysis of the AAM as a political organization provides some important insights into a largely neglected area of interest group behavior, their mobilization & activation. The research presented constitutes a leadership study that examines strategies & tactics employed in the organizational effort. Analyzed also are the problems of organizing in general & employing protest style tactics. 22 References. Modified HA.

A 22-question interview was conducted with 41 severely hearing-impaired students at NTID in order to compare speech intelligibility in communicating social and technical information and in responses which varied in message predictability. Five trained speech pathologists rated responses live, using a 5-point scale. Mean ratings of speech intelligibility were found to be significantly higher for social material than for technical information. Speech intelligibility ratings in both categories decreased as the message predictability decreased. These findings are discussed relative to communication instruction at NTID and to the assessment and reporting of speech intelligibility ratings.

SummaryConsanguinity is studied in a large sample of marriages among Dhangars of Maharashtra, India. The 22 endogamous castes included in the study show great variation in incidence, about an overall frequency of 26.4%. Matrilateral first cross-cousin unions are more frequency than patrilateral, and maternal uncle-niece nuions least frequent. Geograbhical differences are conspicuous, and all three types of consanguineous union show characteristic patterns; matrilateral unions increase in frequncy northwards, patrilateral and uncle-niece decrease northwards. The inbreeding levels among the Dhangars are high compared to other Maharashtrian groups, but substantially lower than in southern Dravidian speaking groups.

Gegenstand dieses Beitrages sind die Ergebnisse einer Untersuchung sozio-politischer Grundwerte von Abiturienten, operationalisiert als Stellungnahmen zu symbolischen Desideraten relativ hohen Allgemeinheitsgrades. Der Untersuchungsansatz entspricht seinem generellen Typ nach mithin dem Verfahren von Rokeach, ist aber weit mehr als dieses auf die Erfassung von 'Wertstrukturen' angelegt. - Die in diesem Beitrag dargestellten Befunde entstammen einer Befragung baden-württembergischer Abiturienten, die im Februar 1976 von der Projektgruppe Hochschulsozialisation des Zentrum I Bildungsforschung der Universität Konstanz durchgeführt wurde. Zugrunde liegt eine Klumpenstichprobe, die an 22 Schulen 48 Klassen der vier zahlenmäßig stärksten Gymnasialtypen umfaßt. - Die Befunde belegen den Zusammenhang zwischen sozio-politischen Werten und politischem Standort. Die konkurrierenden Vertretungsansprüche, die hier sichtbar werden, stellen einen Typ von Wertkonflikt dar, den die empirische Wertforschung bislang vernachlässigt hat. Dabei herrscht offenbar gerade im politischen Bereich dieser Konflikttyp vor: Umstritten ist weniger, was wünschbar ist, als vielmehr, wer das Wünschbare besser vertritt und fördert. (AR2)

Ausgehend von Beschreibungen des alexithymischen Verhaltens wird aus soziologischer Perspektive die theoretische Kategorie der instrumentellen Orientierung als Suchmuster für Präzisierungs- und Erklärungsversuche dieser Erscheinung behandelt. Ziel ist es, ausgehend von den vorliegenden theoretischen und empirischen Beiträgen zum Begriff der instrumentellen Orientierung ein einschlägiges Instrument zu entwickeln, das in einem ersten Zugriff im Sinne einer Pilotstudie die Möglichkeit bietet, die theoretische und empirische Fortsetzung des Zusammenhangs von Erscheinungen, wie sie die Alexithymieforschung aufzeigt, unter der Kategorie der instrumentellen Orientierung zu begründen. Das empirische Vorgehen des Projekts, die Testkonstruktion, die Entwicklung einer Einzelskala über eine Itemanalyse werden kurz vorgestellt. Einige Überlegungen gelten dem Problem der Validierung der Skala, einem Projektschritt, der noch nicht abgeschlossen ist. Der Prototyp des Instruments wurde zur Überprüfung der grundsätzlichen Validität der zentralen Hypothese einer Stichprobe von 22 Ulcus-Kranken vorgelegt. Im Ergebnis stellt sich heraus, daß sich in der Patientengruppe eine deutliche Erhöhung des Skalenwerts gegenüber der Vorhersage zeigt. Damit wird die Hypothese bestätigt, daß bei psychosomatischer Erkrankung mit einer erhöhten Ausprägung instrumenteller Orientierung zu rechnen ist. (RW)

Division of labor, in research as well as in teaching, has produced, in economics as elsewhere, an indefinite number of specialities that are usually described as "applied fields." … These fields may accumulate "private" stocks of facts and methods that are of little or no use outside their boundaries. Beyond this, however, they have repeatedly developed accumulations of facts and conceptual schemata that should be recorded as contributions to general economic analysis, even though the appointed wardens of the latter have sometimes been slow to welcome them.—J.
