The study and practice of conservation biology is inherently interdisciplinary, addresses short and long time-scales and occurs within complex human–natural interfaces. Zoos and aquaria, in partnership with researchers, other non-government organizations, government, industry and educators, are combining knowledge of species and ecosystems with economics, psychology and law to create solutions for conserving biodiversity. From 22 to 25 May, the Conservation Forum of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria was a venue for discussing conservation research, education and interventions, from the scale of villages to global policy.

"Unsettling Feminism(s): Disrupting the Center, Dismantling Oppressions, Transforming Social Work" took place on May 22–24, 2011 in the campus of the University of Illinois at Chicago. Three participants in the "unconference" reflect on how the conference realized its intent of "unsettling" current thinking and expanding the possibility for transformative and emancipator action. While the unconference provided space for a generative dialogue among a rich diversity of participants, multiple spaces are required for interrogating, integrating, and building multiracial feminism/feminisms and knowledge for the transformative social work we envision as possible.

En este artículo el autor reflexiona sobre el tema de la identidad asumida en determinados contextos socioculturales y su manifestación en la concepción de ciudad, tanto en la tradición bíblica como en el escenario de la denominada sociedad del conocimiento. Para ello, y con base en algunos conceptos psicoanalíticos, se elaboran una serie de consideraciones de orden sociocultural a partir de los capítulos 21 y 22 del Apocalipsis, para luego trasladarlas hacia la sociedad del siglo XXI y el tipo de experiencias ciudadanas que en ella se presentarían.

Des stages de sport pour les allocataires du RMI sont financés par des collectivités dans le cadre de leurs politiques d'insertion. Partant des textes qui présentent ces stages, d'une observation participante et de 22 entretiens semi-directifs avec des stagiaires1, l'article interroge cette convocation du sport dans le rapport d'assistance. L'analyse montre que le sport se présente comme un dispositif intégrant la logique des politiques d'activation qui visent à responsabiliser l'individu. Plus précisément, l'activation corporelle vise à contrer le laisser-aller perçu chez les allocataires : il s'agit de redevenir employable corporellement en devenant responsable de soi et de son corps.

We examine the impact of poor water quality on avoidance behavior by estimating the change in bottled water purchases in response to drinking water violations. Using data from a national grocery chain matched with water quality violations, we find an increase in bottled water sales of 22 percent from violations due to microorganisms and 17 percent from violations due to elements and chemicals. Back-of-the envelope calculations yield costs of avoidance behavior at roughly $60 million for all nationwide violations in 2005, which likely reflects a significant understatement of the total willingness to pay to eliminate violations.

Se puede apreciar en la Ley de Propiedad Intelectual como a los autores del "software" se les trata con mayor rigor que a los creadores de otras obras intelectuales, produciéndose un debilitamiento de sus derechos de autor. Por ello, este trabajo va dirigido a realizar un estudio comparativo sobre la normativa laboral vigente, junto a la ley de 11/1 986, de 20 marzo, sobre patentes y, en su caso, la ley de 22/1987, de 2 noviembre, de propiedad intelectual. Con la finalidad de establecer los posibles derechos emergentes de los trabajadores y empresarios.

Am 22. Oktober 1898 wurde der "Jüdische Turnverein Bar Kochba Berlin", der erste jüdische Turnverein im wilhelminischen Deutschland gegründet. Er entwickelte sich rasch zu einer treibenden Kraft der jüdischen Turnbewegung auf politischer, intellektueller und organisatorischer Ebene. Er organisierte die eigene Vereinspresse, er war wichtig für viele Neugründungen im Kaiserreich und zentral für die Etablierung einer eigenen Dachorganisation, der "Jüdischen Turnerschaft". Was bewegte jüdische Turner damals in Deutschland dazu, eigene Vereine zu gründen, eine eigene Zeitschrift zu betreiben und eigene Theorien über das Turnen zu entwickeln? Es gab doch, so sollte man meinen, mehr als genug Turnvereine im Kaiserreich. Die Antwort des Autors lautet: die antisemitische Tradition in Turnvereinen der Deutschen Turnerschaft, des wichtigsten Dachverbandes der Turner im Kaiserreich. Diese Tradition hatte keinen zufälligen oder vereinzelten, sondern einen strukturellen, das Verbands- und das Vereinsleben im damaligen Deutschland prägenden Charakter. Dieses strukturelle Moment steht im Mittelpunkt der vorliegenden historischen Analyse. (ICI2)

Seit 2004 wurden in sechs deutschen Bundesländern Gesetze zur Einrichtung von Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) erlassen. Im Jahr 2011 existieren 22 BIDs in verschiedenen deutschen Städten. Nach dem Konzept der BIDs werden privates Engagement und staatlicher Zwang verbunden, um die Attraktivität und Funktionsfähigkeit eines Stadtviertels zu stärken. Der Autor erstellt mit seiner Arbeit eine umfassende Charakterisierung dieser eigentümlichen Partnerschaft. Im ersten Teil wird die Rechtsgestalt eines BIDs und das Beziehungsgeflecht der Beteiligten beschrieben und analysiert. Der zweite Teil setzt sich mit der Stellung der BIDs im deutschen Verwaltungsrecht auseinander. Eine rechtssystematische Einordnung der einzelnen Elemente erfolgt, ebenso wie die Herstellung der Diskussionszusammenhänge, zu den Themen 'Städtebaurecht' und 'Public Private Partnership'. Im dritten Teil wird ein Verständnis der BIDs als Instrumente der kommunalen Governance herausgearbeitet. Die Entwicklung von Stadtvierteln stellt sich nicht mehr allein als hoheitlich-zentral gesteuerte Angelegenheit dar, sondern wird unter Einsatz verschiedener Koordinations-Modi von den Beteiligten partnerschaftlich erledigt

Building a sustainable system that goes beyond myopic interests and short-term policies is an arduous task for any school leader. In the U.S., our education system has been criticized for being too shallow in curriculum and unsustainable in the long run. In fact, a 2007 report by UNICEF concerning children's well-being in 22 countries ranked the U.K. and the U.S. at the bottom of the industrialized nations in the survey. Hargreaves (2007) laments that these two countries, in their single-minded pursuit of economic competitiveness and development at all costs, are destroying the planet, while "eating their young."

Starting with a preliminary survey of Lepidoptera species in March 1998 in the Hunstein Range of Papua New Guinea, a more intensive community-interactive research project was developed in collaboration with two national PNG government agencies and the University of Papua New Guinea. The first phase was carried out during October 2003 with an expedition to the west slope approach to Mt. Samsai, the highest peak (at 1525 m) in the remote Hunstein Range of southern East Sepik Province. More than 111 butterfly taxa were recorded during the 9-22 October 2003 expedition. Habitats and unusual taxa encountered are discussed and illustrated.
