Der Beitrag befasst sich mit der Frage, wie es der Islam, bzw. die Menschen, die sich mit der Religion des Islam verbunden fühlen, mit der Demokratie und Rechtsstaatlichkeit halten? Welchen Platz kann der Islam im modernen Rechtsstaat einnehmen? Dabei gilt es zunächst, die Gründe dafür herauszuarbeiten, dass Demokratien in Staaten mit muslimischer Mehrheitsbevölkerung Mangelware sind, um dann zur Frage überzugehen, ob die Religion des Islam einschließlich ihres religiösen Rechts der Entwicklung freiheitlicher demokratischer Systeme entgegensteht. Zum Beispiel steht das Konzept der alleinigen Souveränität Gottes allen gängigen Demokratiekonzepten entgegen, und Frauen wird eine traditionelle Geschlechtsrolle in Haus und Familie zugewiesen. Im weiteren Verlauf werden Reformansätze im Islam und die Position von im Westen lebenden Muslimen beleuchtet. Die Betrachtungen verdeutlichen, dass es angesichts der Vielfalt der Modelle europäisch-islamischer Theologie verfehlt wäre, den Islam generell in einen Gegensatz zu den Grundlagen europäischer Staaten und Gesellschaften zu stellen. "Die senegalesische Verfassung garantiert die Religionsfreiheit, das Prinzip der Trennung von Staat und Religion ist in ihr verankert. Parteiengründungen unter religiösem Vorzeichen sind nicht zugelassen. Als im Vorfeld des Referendums über Verfassungsänderungen vor einigen Jahren die Bezeichnung 'Laizismus' aus dem Text gestrichen werden sollte, ging ein Aufschrei der Empörung durch die senegalesische Bevölkerung. Journalisten, Politiker und gesellschaftliche Verantwortungsträger befürchteten ein Abgleiten des Staates in Richtung einer islamischen Republik und malten das Schreckgespenst einer von Mollahs beherrschten Gesellschaft an die Wand. Der Vorschlag wurde unverzüglich zurückgenommen, so dass der Laizismus formal weiter Bestand hatte. Informell haben sich die senegalesischen Politiker seit Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts mit Geschick den Einfluss der religiösen Führer zu Nutzen gemacht: in vielen Fällen beeinflusst die religiös motivierte Stimmabgabe die Wahlergebnisse maßgeblich. Résumé La fonction dévolue à la religion en Pologne, d'indicateur privilégié de l'établissement d'un rapport au pluralisme, n'a pas été modifiée par le changement de régime survenu en 1989. Indicateur majeur de la relation au pluriel, la religion constitue tout autant, dans les réemplois qui en sont opérés, l'espace privilégié d'affichage des ajustements requis par les transformations rapides auxquelles se trouve confrontée la société. Et cette utilisation du catholicisme à des fins de gestion d'un mouvement multiforme conduit à poser les recompositions qu'il connaît en révélateur du désenchantement polonais.

Contrairement à ce qu'affirment les fondamentalistes, le Coran n'est pas un recueil de règles et de formules pour les actes publics. L'orientalisme finlandais est illustré, au xix e siècle, par les recherches de Georg August Wallin, avant d'être élargi au domaine de l'anthropologie sociale par Edward Westermarck et Hilma Granqvist. Ce thème est poursuivi dans la seconde moitié du xx e siècle. La recherche finlandaise sur la religion et le monde musulman s'est alors rapidement développée avec le relief que prenait l'islam et son importance accrue dans la politique mondiale.

Research on the post-World War II generations offers the opportunity to examine significant trends in American religion that will shape the early decades of the next century. A reclaiming of the spiritual, the more experiential aspects of religion, is at the very heart of these changes for younger cohorts of Americans. The crucial question is, Will religious institutions adapt to these experiential quests and provide the symbolic resources needed to sustain them? Drawing from insights from Ernst Troeltsch, several possible scenarios are described as we move into the new century.

Peter Winch and Ludwig Wittgenstein have opposed the idea that traditional religion and magic are practiced in order to gain practical, instrumental ends. Their argument rests on interpretive charity: other cultures would have to be unbelievably irrational to believe in magic's practical effectiveness. In this paper, I show that Winch's own philosopical doctrine makes room for the possibility of instrumental pluralism, the notion that different societies may possess different criteria of instrumental rationality. Es ist üblich geworden, von « nationalen Modellen » zu sprechen, wenn es um den Vergleich der Organisations — und Integrationsformen von Migranten geht, die sich seit den 60er Jahren in verschiedenen europäischen Ländern niedergelassen haben. Diese Modelle, die auf politischen Traditionen und dem Verhältnis beruhen, das der Staat zu Bevölkerungsgruppen in der Position von Minderheiten (seien sie es aufgrund der Religion, der Ethnie oder der Rasse) unlerhält, beeinflussen die Mobilisierung dieser Gruppen. Ihre Mobilisierungsformen weisen in jedem Land auf die Interiorisierung der jeweiligen politischen Normen und Verhaltensregeln hin und sind so ein Zeichen der « Nationalisierung » ihrer Aktionen. Die europäische Vereinigung stellt aber den Einfluss und die Prägnanz dieser Modelle in Frage. Die politischen Partizipationsformen der Migranten passen sich dem neuen politischen Feld an, das transnationale Solidaritäten bevorteilt, die sich aufgrund der Nationalität (der jetzigen oder der Herkunftsnationalität), der Religion oder der « Farbe » bilden. Die Aktivitäten, die damit einhergehen, umgehen die nationale Politik, um eine europäische Representativität zu erlangen.

Professor Harold Berman has presented the fascinating thesis that a people's religion influences their laws and that the Puritan religious revolution of seventeenth century England introduced Calvinist ideas into Anglo-American jurisprudence. I fully agree with Professor Berman's observations that religious beliefs and a sense of moral obligation to others are some of the motivations of, or at least influences upon, legal growth. Economic aggrandizement is not the only motivation of the human race. Religion has had a direct effect upon social and political institutions.

The paper sheds light on the positive role religions have played in advocating freedom. Religion liberated man from all forms of oppression, slavery and dominion, and then left to him (the man) the power to act within a general framework based on freedom. However, human beings did not remain commited to this principle, and the strong man has imposed his will over the weak. One of the expressions of such authority was man 's oppression of woman. Apparently, women's rights have been subject to most ambiguity especially in relation to the issue of equality.

Besides this, it looks at how the migrants' language situation had developed by the mid 1990s. It investigates how Pashto speakers communicated with each other and with members of their respective Shina-, Khowar-, Balti- and Burushaski-speaking host communities, focussing in particular on cross-dialectal communication and language shift. The book also aims to define how the trends related to Pashtun migration to the Northern Areas in the mid 1990s could develop in the near future.Interwoven with this analysis are childhood memories and life stories recounted by the Pashto speakers interviewed by the author. All interviewees were ordinary people leading ordinary lives - traders, cobblers, tea boys, farmers and porters. Their stories provide a voice to the Pashto speaking migrants themselves and give the reader a fascinating insight into their lives
