In dieser Studie werden die Zusammenhänge zwischen der Innovationsdynamik, den technologischen sowie wirtschaftlichen Spezialisierungen und der Wirtschaftswachstums- und Produktivitätsentwicklungen für die EU15-Staaten theoretisch und empirisch untersucht. Ausgehend von einer umfassenden Darstellung der relevanten theoretischen Erklärungsansätze stehen bei den empirischen Analysen drei Aspekte im Vordergrund. Erstens wird untersucht, wie sich die Innovationsdynamik seit 1963 in den EU-Staaten entwickelt hat und ob es zu einer Konvergenz oder Divergenz der nationalen Innovationsfähigkeiten gekommen ist. Zweitens wird die Evolution der technologischen und wirtschaftlichen Spezialisierungen innerhalb der EU mittels adäquater statistischer Kennzahlen und Verfahren beschrieben. Drittens wird auf der Basis ökonometrischer Modelle der Einfluss von Innovationen, Wissensdiffusion und Spezialisierung auf das Wirtschaftswachstum und die ökonomische Konvergenz der EU-Staaten abgeschätzt.
