Fan fiction and the author in the early 17th century: The case of Sidney's "Arcadia"
In: Transformative Works and Cultures: TWC, Band 11
ISSN: 1941-2258
An analysis of the body of supplements and continuations written during the first half of the 17th century around Sir Philip Sidney's romance, The Countess of Pembroke's Arcadia, may usefully be approached as a precedent for fan fiction practice. The incomplete nature of the Arcadia as published left a number of textual gaps that were filled by later writers, with many of their works coming to be included within subsequent reissues of the Arcadia itself. The texts discussed include William Alexander and James Johnstoun's supplements to book 3, Richard Belling's Sixth Booke, Anna Weamys's Continuation, Gervase Markham's English Arcadia, and an anonymous Historie of Arcadia in manuscript. Like contemporary fan fiction, these works adopt Sidney's characters and setting in order to fill apparent gaps, propel the story toward a happy ending, or recast it in an altogether different mold. Moreover, the paratextual materials surrounding these texts—including prefaces, dedications, and commendatory poems—provide important evidence about early modern conceptions of authorship, originality, and literary property.

The Enigma of H. Costenoble – The Long Search for the Author of Die Chamoro Sprache
In: Archipel, Band 77, Heft 1, S. 21-25

The Author Marx and His Editor Engels: Different Views on Volume 3 of Capital
In: Rethinking marxism: RM ; a journal of economics, culture, and society, Band 14, Heft 4, S. 59-72
ISSN: 0893-5696
Part of a symposium on the Marx-Engels Gesamtausgabe, the collaboration between Karl Marx & Friedrich Engels on Capital, volume 3 is examined to determine whether Engels interpreted Marx's thought appropriately. An overview of the extent of collaboration between Marx & Engels is presented, illustrating their numerous discussions, joint journalistic work, & editorial work each performed on the other's writings; indeed, the correspondence between Marx & Engels that preceded the publication of Capital, volume 1 is noted to highlight the extent of their cooperation. However, Marx's unpublished manuscripts on Capital that were written in 1864-1865, 1867-1868, & 1875 that contemplate the relationship between rate of surplus-value & rate of profit are studied to ascertain how Engels pieced together Marx's thought on this aspect of the capitalist system. It is concluded that the publication of the Marx-Engels Gesamtausgabe will facilitate attempts to evaluate Engels' editorial work in Capital, volume 3. 27 References. J. W. Parker
