Using the conceptual framework of a developmental state, forwarded by the Economic Commission for Africa, it was found that Ethiopia's democratic developmental state is unique and operates differently from the Malaysian developmental state model. Economically, Ethiopia has recorded staggering economic growth since it adopted the developmental state. The Malaysian developmental state was developed to be market-oriented and as a result Malaysia's GDP grew at 5.23 percent from 2005-2011. Malaysia's incidence of poverty declined from 49% in 1970 to less than 5% in 2000. Ethiopia has focused on a planned developmental state, without speeding the direction of industrialization, and has achieved an average 9.9 percent growth rate in GDP from 2005-2011. With economic growth, the poverty reduction measured by poverty head count in Ethiopia has declined from 41.9 in 2005 to 29.6 percent in 2011. Although Ethiopia's Human Development Index (HDI) has increased by 16% from 2005 to 2011, its HDI score is about 22% less than the average score of sub-Saharan countries. The poverty ratio of people living on less than $1.25 a day in Ethiopia is very close to about 30 percent. It means that those with low incomes have not benefitted from the staggering economic growth that much of the country has achieved in the last seven years.

Der Bologna-Prozess beinhaltet die umfassendste Reform der deutschen Hochschulgeschichte. Er hat im Jahre 1999 mit der Unterzeichnung der Bologna-Erklärung von damals 29 Wissenschaftsminister/innen europäischer Länder begonnen. Die Bologna-Reform ist eine freiwillige Vereinbarung von heute 48 Ländern, die zu einem großen Teil nicht Mitglieder der Europäischen Union sind und z.T. nicht geografisch zu Europa gehören. Diese Reform beinhaltet sowohl strukturell "harte" Maßnahmen wie z.B. die gestufte Studienstruktur als auch "weiche" Ziele wie die "studierendenzentrierte Lehre". Motivierend war für alle Länder jedoch die Aussicht auf die Schaffung eines gemeinsamen Europäischen Hochschulraums mit hoher Mobilität der Studierenden und Wissenschaftler/innen. Die Bologna-Reform hat den Signatar-Staaten die Chance auf eine eigenständige Interpretation gegeben. Hiervon haben viele Länder, auch Deutschland, reichlich Gebrauch gemacht. Die Umsetzung hat an den deutschen Hochschulen sehr lange gedauert und vorübergehend grundlegende Mängel aufgewiesen, insbesondere in den Bachelorprogrammen der Universitäten: Heute sind einige dieser Probleme gelöst, aber beileibe nicht alle: So sind Verrechtlichung und Verschulung der Studiengänge noch zu groß und die Abbruchraten der Studierenden zu hoch. Dr. Sherman P. Vinograd fulfilled the roles of Chief of Medical Science and Technology and Director of Biomedical Research at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) from the fall of 1961 until the spring of 1979. In this role he shaped, organized, and directed NASA's program of medical research as a funded program of studies, which was carried out in not only NASA Center laboratories, but also in university, industry, and other government laboratories and hospitals all over the country. It produced a large substrate of information through its bed rest studies, vestibular, bone, neuromuscular, hematology, and cardiovascular researches. It also produced valuable fall-out, such as an accurate bone density measurement technique which is now in common clinical use. ; His major activities during this career were conceptualizing, establishing, and chairing the Space Medicine Advisory Group (SPAMAG) charged with defining the earth-based and space-based research and life-support requirements for a manned orbiting research laboratory. This group designed a carefully planned study utilizing highly qualified, specialized members of the scientific community. They postulated a non-existent orbiting laboratory to be designed according to the needs of future human flight crews and requirements for human spaceflight information. This would result in the creation of Skylab. ; He was also responsible for establishing the In-flight Medical Experiments Program in preparation for the Apollo series of manned space flights. This program was a series of carefully designed flight crew studies derived from proposals by qualified scientists both from within and outside NASA to evaluate human responses to spaceflight. ; In addition, Dr. Vinograd developed a supportive Research and Development Program necessary to provide pertinent ground-based data and to advance state-of-the-art medical measurement technology, a major development of which was the Integrated Medical and Behavioral Laboratory Measurement System (IMBLMS). This consisted of medical experiments and accompanying equipment necessary to perform them that was used from the Gemini through the Skylab manned space flight programs. Carried aboard virtually any post-Apollo space vehicle by virtue of its rack and module design, these designs were used well into the future. He also fostered the continuing ground-based medical research program sponsored and/or conducted by NASA. ; The Dr. Sherman P. Vinograd Aerospace Exploration collection consists of artifacts, books, correspondence, financial materials, newspapers, photographs, plaques, printed materials, and reports relating to Dr. Vinograd's early life, his career as an M. D. prior to joining NASA, his years as a physician and researcher at NASA, and the other professional organizations and projects in which he was involved both during and after these periods. ; Box 5, Folder 22
