May 9th was celebrated in the former Soviet Republic of Azerbaijan, as in Russia, as the Day of Victory over Fascism, yet the Second World War has been ambivalently portrayed in Azerbaijani schools since independence in 1991. Azerbaijani historiography had already dispensed with the lofty term "Great Patriotic War" by the late 1980's. in 1994-95 the Azerbaijani legions, which were assembled by the Wehrmacht and which until then had been kept secret, were integrated into the history curriculum in Azerbaijan. From this time on, Azerbaijan has been depicted as a geopolitical bone of contention among the rivalling Great Powers within the framework of the Soviet-German War. The illumination of World War II in post-communist history textbooks in Azerbaijan continues to be formed by several factors. Among these is not only the authoritarian regime in the republic, but also the country's relationship with Russia. If the Azerbaijani history textbook from 1994-95 was still strongly influenced by the extremely Russia-critical position of the Popular Front Party (1992-93), the textbook from 2003 emerged under the circumstances of a relationship with Russia that had improved but that was still rather complicated. ; Der. 9 Mai wird in der ehemaligen Sowjetrepublik Aserbaidschan wie in Russland als Tag des Sieges über den Faschismus gefeiert, jedoch wird der Krieg 1941-45 in den Schulen Aserbaidschans seit der Unabhängigkeit 1991 ambivalent dargelegt.
