"Only those who knew Auschwitz know what it was. Others will never know it. " This truth proclaimed by Elie Wiesel summarizes the impossibility of representing to oneself what the victims of Nazism, whether Jewish, Gypsy, homosexual or political opponents, endured. Indeed, if we can not imagine their tribulations how can we imagine representing them? This question was the one that presided over the emergence of the concept of irrepresentability, defended notably by Claude Lanzmann, a concept that soon became an injunction that condemned any undertaking of fictionalizing the Holocaust. However, despite the forbidden or perhaps because of these prohibitions, artists, Prometheus of modern times, basically transgressive and free have seized this subject that has become unavoidable. Not a year goes by without a Holocaust-themed work being produced. All are not worthwhile, some even use the infatuation of the public for the period of the Second World War to give depth to their work that is sorely lacking. But some bring a new light, instill an original and uplifting thought while avoiding the stumbling block that constitutes the indecency, it is the case of the works which we chose to study. As Yosef Yerushalmi puts it: "The Holocaust has already attracted more historical research than any other event in Jewish history, but I have no doubt that the image that emerges from it, far from being forged on the an anvil of the historian, be melted in the crucible of the novelist ". It is this crucible that we wish to explore through our comparative analysis of Romain Gary's Genghis Cohn's Dance, Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious basterds and Mieczyslaw Weinberg's The Passsenger. This study aims to highlight the progressive shift of the real to the fiction that artists put in place in their works and analyze it to reveal the issues. Then to highlight the fictional artifices used by artists as revelators and to emphasize their contributions to the theme of the Holocaust, and finally to contemplate the omnipotence of art which, at the time of its advent, acquires absolute freedom, power as it allows him to bring out characters from beyond the grave, to symbolically summon those who have escaped and to put to death Hitler and all that he represents, the time of fiction. If these daring ventures are jubilant, they are no less revealing. Indeed, they emphasize, in negative, our helplessness in the face of the horror of reality. Because as Laurent Binet says in HhhH: " History is the only real fatality : it can be re-read in all directions, but we can not rewrite it. Cependant, malgré les interdits ou peut-être en raison de ces interdits, les artistes, Prométhées des tempsmodernes, transgressifs et libres par essence se sont emparés de ce sujet qui est devenu incontournable. Pas une année ne passe sans qu'une oeuvreayant pour thème la Shoah ne voie le jour. Toutes ne sont pas dignes d'intérêt, certaines se servent même de l'engouement du public pour la période dela Seconde Guerre mondiale afin de donner de la profondeur à leur oeuvre qui en manque cruellement. Mais certaines apportent un éclairage nouveau,instillent une pensée originale et édifiante en évitant la pierre d'achoppement que constitue l'indécence, c'est le cas des oeuvres que nous avons choisid'étudier. Comme le dit Yosef Yerushalmi : « L'Holocauste a déjà suscité plus de recherches historiques que tout autre événement de l'histoire juive,mais je ne doute pas que l'image qui s'en dégage, loin d'être forgée sur l'enclume de l'historien, soit fondue dans le creuset du romancier ». C'est cecreuset que nous souhaitons explorer à travers notre analyse comparée de La Danse de Gengis Cohn de Romain Gary, d'Inglourious basterds deQuentin Tarantino et de The Passsenger de Mieczyslaw Weinberg. Cette étude a pour ambition de mettre en lumière le glissement progressif du réelvers la fiction que les artistes mettent en place dans leurs oeuvres et de l'analyser afin d'en révéler les enjeux. Puis de relever les artifices fictionnelsutilisés par les artistes comme des révélateurs et de souligner leurs apports au thème de la Shoah, et enfin de contempler la toute-puissance de l'art qui,le temps de son avènement, acquiert une liberté absolue, pouvoir tel qu'il lui permet de faire émerger des personnages d'outre-tombe, d'assignersymboliquement à comparaître ceux qui s'en sont tirés à bon compte et finalement de mettre à mort Hitler et tout ce qu'il représente, le temps de lafiction. Si ces entreprises audacieuses sont jubilatoires, elles ne sont pas moins révélatrices. En effet, elles soulignent, en négatif, notre impuissanceface à l'horreur du réel . Car comme le dit Laurent Binet dans HhhH : L'Histoire est la seule véritable fatalité : « on peut la relire dans tous les sens,mais on ne peut pas la réécrire ».

Gemeinsam ist ihren Darstellungen die eingehende implizite und explizite Auseinandersetzung mit der Angemessenheit der eigenen Ästhetik, die sie auch über den Bezug aufs Musikalische führen. Eine Möglichkeit für Literatur, die Nähe bzw. Distanz zu ihrem Gegenstand zu markieren und zu diskutieren, ist die Musikalisierung. Als Musikalisierung bezeichnet man literarische Versuche, eine gleichsam musikalische Erfahrung zu schaffen. Eine Literatur, die sich der Musik annähert, evoziert eine Diskussion über die Vorzüge und Nachteile der literarischen Semiotik gegenüber der musikalischen. Diese liegen vereinfacht gesagt darin, dass Literatur ihren Gegenstand repräsentiert, Musik ihr Gegenstand ist. Es liegt nahe, von einem direkten Zusammenhang von dem testimonialen Anspruch einer Holocaustdarstellung und ihrem Umgang mit Musik auszugehen. Davon, dass sich die Holocaustrepräsentationen Überlebender einer stärker musikalisierten Poetik bedienen, weil sie eine direkte Begegnung mit dem Holocaust bezeugen wollen, wohingegen die Literatur Außenstehender, der Kinder und Enkel der Überlebenden, ihrem vermittelten Wissen durch eine Poetik zu entsprechen sucht, die ausdrücklich von Musikalisierungen Abstand nimmt. Eine Analyse der genannten Darstellungen bestätigt diese Annahme allerdings nur zum Teil. Zwar verzichten Romane wie Rosenbaums The Golems of Gotham, Foers Everything Is Illuminated, Littells Les Bienveillantes sowie Lanzmanns Film Shoah ausdrücklich deshalb auf eine musikalisierte Darstellungsweise, weil sie diese mit dem testimonialen Wissen der Überlebenden identifizieren. Doch der Überlebendenliteratur selber lassen sich nur sehr selten melopoetische Absichten nachweisen, und selbst dann erweisen sich Musikalisierungen, wie in Celans Gedicht "Todesfuge", als in erster Linie metafiktionale und kritische Instrumente. Außerdem gibt es Autoren der zweiten und dritten Generation, die die Konstruiertheit ihres Zeugnisses durch intensive Musikalisierungsversuche betonen. Bukiets Roman After zum Beispiel benutzt Musikalisierungen, die den Leser statt zu einem Re-enactment der traumatischen Vergangenheit zum affektiven Nachvollzug gegenwärtiger Gedenkformen einladen. This means that through the use of musicalization literature can imply the wish to no longer represent, but to be its object. Holocaust-literature for instance can, by indulging in or explicitly refraining from the use of musicalization, raise the question of whether a representation or reenactment would be the appropriate way to express a particular degree of testimonial knowledge. It seems safe to assume that there is a link between the claims of testimonial knowledge that a representation of the holocaust makes and the way it evokes music. Survivors who would want to testify a direct encounter with the "Univers concentrationnaire" (David Rousset) would be expected to involve intense forms of musicalization. Texts written by their children or grandchildren, on the other hand, would, in consideration of the indirect and vicarious nature of their testimony, be presumed to do without them. This assumption, however, was confirmed only in parts. Though non-survivors do, indeed, identify the use of musicalization with "first hand testimony" and therefore refrain from it, there are only a few examples of survivors' literature that confirm this identification – even in those who do, like Paul Celan in his famous poem "Die Todesfuge", use musicalizations, first and foremost, as metafictional and critical tools. On the other hand, some writers emphasize the constructiveness of their knowledge just by indulging in a musicalized poetic. In Bukiet's novel After, for instance, musicalizations do not aim at engaging the reader in a traumatic past but in present forms of commemoration. In the examples of Holocaust representation mentioned above, musicalizations appear to be mainly instruments of metamedial discussions. They seem to be capable of questioning the appropriateness of a discursive as well as an affective aesthetic, of criticizing the concealment of traumatic pain as well as its misappropriation. In the last 25 years, the holocaust has emerged into a cultural and political metaphor of such prominence that, as Bukiet provocatively put it, "seven out of ten" books will at least mention it. At the same time, the meaning of the "H word" (Bukiet) has become more and more obscure. The prevalent aesthetic of this culture of commemoration invites the recipient to emotionally, affectively and sometimes even physically reenact the painful experiences of the victims. Critics such as Charles Maier have pointed out that this obsession with memory has a tendency to substitute the discussion of current social problems and thereby to prevent any transformative politics. Musicalizations, as a strategy that can enforce as well as question an aesthetic of reenactment, seem to show one way of how holocaust-literature can still observe its social function.

Władysław Pasikowski's 2012 feature film Aftermath recapitulates and works through the existing resources in documentary cinema that deals with the Polish context of the Holocaust (Claude Lanzmann, Paweł Łoziński, Marian Marzyński, Agnieszka Arnold). It is also founded on the knowledge amassed in the wake of the countrywide debate about the 1941 Jedwabne massacre (2000–1). As such, it rejects the majority narrative of the Holocaust, one told under the banners of the Righteous Among the Nations (the paradigm of innocence), the Polish witness to the Holocaust (triggering an unjustified identification of the Jaspersian paradigm of unimputable, metaphysical guilt with unwarranted guilt), and the alleged collective Polish trauma of the Holocaust.
Aftermath is analyzed as a treatise on antisemitism which problematizes and narrativizes phantasms that are central to this socio-cultural pathology, visualizing the mechanism whereby the phantasm of the Jew is constructed and imposed on actual individuals. It also touches upon the Christian roots and identitarian dimension of antisemitism, alongside its central figure: the Crucifixion. Antisemitism is a matter of religion as a doctrine but also religion as an institution.
By displaying a plexus of discourses and practices, attitudes and behaviors, Pasikowski defends the great quantifier as a legitimate category to describe the Polish context of the Holocaust. He debunks the essential differentiation between pre-modern and modern antisemitism (including notions about the secondary nature of Polish antisemitism in relation to the German Nazi exterminatory projects targeted at the Jews).
The film convincingly portrays antisemitism as dominating the experience and its representation to such an extent that antisemitic culture loses the ability to reflect on the human condition. Where a non-antisemite sees the irreducible strangeness that is inherent to individual existence, the antisemite sees a Jew, etc. The long duration of violence and exclusion has turned the phantasmic and alternative reality of antisemitism into reality tout court, as it produces a materiality of its own, up to and including the materiality of the atrocity (stolen property, looted corpses, etc.).

From this perspective, a new narrative becomes possible as a critique of narratives.

In the ongoing and passionate debates over the digitalization of visual media, many questions about the ontology or materiality of the new digital image have been raised. Analog representation is often thought of in terms of indexicality and sometimes a naive belief in the truthfulness of the photographic image, whereas the digital image is, in a way, no longer an image anymore, but a set of data in flux, superficially coded and easy to manipulate. The following article examines how this shift to digitalization affects the ethical genre per se: the witness film. In a film analytical close reading of Claude Lanzmann's Shoah and Ari Folman's Waltz with Bashir, resonances become visible to psychoanalysis, Deleuzian film philosophy and the debates over the materiality of the analog and digital image. Lanzmann draws on a specific kind of indirect indexicality, which is highly interested in the psychic and embodied realities of surviving, witnessing and the passing of time, whereas Folman develops a politics of the powers of the false: truthfulness, accessibility and memorability are abolished in favor of false images, screen-memories and traumatic mis/representation, which are staged noticeably digital and altered, revolving around the impossibility to grasp the ungraspable.

Der Band Das Unbehagen in der Ästhetik versammelt fünf Texte von Jacques Rancière aus den Jahren 2000 bis 2004, die um das spannungsreiche Verhältnis von Kunst, Ästhetik und Politik kreisen. Der Autor unternimmt eine Rekonstruktion der Ästhetik gegen das titelgebende 'Unbehagen', das Rancière in Anlehnung an Freud symptomatisch liest. Gegen unterschiedliche Abgesänge auf die Ästhetik verteidigt er diese, indem er in einem dichten Argumentationsgang ihr begriffliches Fundament erneuert und 'politisiert'. Rancière zufolge entstand ein 'ästhetisches' Regime der Kunst aus dem Zerfall des 'repräsentativen', in dem die Adäquationsnormen der Mimesis noch zwischen Aisthesis und Poiesis vermittelt hatten. Denn im ästhetischen Raum gibt es keine Grenzlinien mehr zwischen Kunst und Nicht-Kunst, Kunst und Leben, Kunst und Politik, Kunstwerken und Waren, Erhabenem und Alltäglichem. Keine Kunst kommt also von nun an ohne Ästhetik aus. In "Die Ästhetik als Politik" fragt Rancière ausgehend von der Krise der ästhetischen Utopie – dem Versprechen einer zukünftigen Emanzipation, dem 'Leben-werden von Kunst' – nach der künstlerischen Situation in der "post-utopischen Gegenwart" (S. 29). Diese sei von einer Spaltung gekennzeichnet: Einerseits findet sich eine Ästhetik des Erhabenen, eine Radikalität der Kunst, in deren Werken blitzartig die Singularität der künstlerischen Form erscheint und andererseits eine relationale Ästhetik, in deren 'kommunitaristischen' Installationen sich eine neue Bescheidenheit der Kunst ausdrücke. Rancière betrachtet die beiden Richtungen, die in gegensätzlicher Weise zur ästhetischen Utopie auf Distanz bleiben, als "Splitter einer aufgelösten Allianz zwischen politischer und künstlerischer Radikalität", deren "Eigenname" Ästhetik sei (S. 32). Rancière geht es um die Rekonstruktion dieser Allianz, der "Logik des ästhetischen Verhältnisses zwischen Politik und Kunst" (ebd.). Deren Praxen korrespondieren einander, indem beide auf eine "zugleich materielle und symbolische Einrichtung einer bestimmten Raumzeit, eine Suspendierung der gewöhnlichen Formen sinnlicher Erfahrung" (S. 33) zielen. "Diese Verteilung und diese Umverteilung der Identitäten, dieses Zerlegen und Neueinteilen der Räume und Zeiten, des Sichtbaren und Unsichtbaren, des Lärms und der Sprache konstituieren das, was ich die Aufteilung des Sinnlichen nenne" (S. 35).[1] Rancière stützt sich dabei auf Schillers Konzept vom "freien Spiel",[2] das sowohl "das ganze Gebäude der ästhetischen Kunst" als auch "die noch schwierigere Lebenskunst" (Schiller) tragen könne. Im freien Spiel werde die Herrschaft der Form über die Materie aufgehoben und damit eine "Freiheit und Gleichheit des Fühlens" eröffnet (S. 43). Diese Politik der Ästhetik verändert den Begriff der Revolution selbst: Aus einer Umwälzung der Staatsmacht wird eine Revolution der sinnlichen Existenz selbst. Rancière denkt das Verhältnis der Autonomie der Kunst und der emanzipatorischen Politik ebenfalls als in 'einem' konzeptuellen Knoten begründet. Zwischen der 'Reinheit' der Kunst und ihrer 'Politisierung' bestünde deshalb gar kein Widerspruch. Die Spannung zwischen der Einsamkeit des Werks und dem ästhetischen Versprechen der Emanzipation rühre vielmehr aus einem permanent wirksamen Widerspruch im Herzen des ästhetischen Regimes selbst: Während in der widerständigen Gestalt des Werkes das Emanzipationsversprechen nur um den Preis seiner Negativität aufbewahrt wird, will das Projekt der ästhetischen Revolution das 'Neue Leben' um den Preis der Aufhebung von Kunst selbst. Davon ausgehend erörtert der zweite Text "Probleme und Transformationen der kritischen Kunst". Diese will Bewusstsein von den Mechanismen der Beherrschung herstellen und ihre Betrachter zu Akteuren werden lassen, muss dabei jedoch mit den paradoxen Zwängen des ästhetischen Regimes umgehen. "Kritische Kunst" vermittelt nicht einfach zwischen Kunst und Politik, sondern "sie muss von den Zonen der Ununterscheidbarkeit zwischen Kunst und den anderen Sphären die Verbindungen wählen, die die politische Verstehbarkeit hervorrufen" (S. 58). In der Collage findet Rancière ein Modell für eine ästhetische Politik, die "zweifach sprechende Elemente" (ebd.) aus Kunst und Nicht-Kunst mischt und die Fremdheit der ästhetischen Erfahrung mit dem Leben-Werden der Kunst verbindet. Rancière argumentiert einleuchtend, dass diese ästhetische Politik keineswegs mit den Collagen von John Heartfield oder Max Ernst beginnt, sondern dass bereits die Literatur des 19. Jahrhunderts, etwa in den Romanen Balzacs und Zolas, von den Grenzüberschreitungen, Verfremdungen und Mischungen zwischen Kunst und der Nicht-Kunst der neuen kapitalistischen Warenwelt lebte. "Das heterogene Sinnliche, von dem sich die Kunst des ästhetischen Zeitalters nährt, kann überall gefunden werden" (S. 61). Rancière erstellt in der Auseinandersetzung mit aktuellen Ausstellungsprojekten eine plausible Typologie von vier Strategien dieser künstlerischen Mikropolitik: 'Spiel', 'Inventar', 'Begegnung' und 'Mysterium'. Der Modus des 'Spiels' bringt Bedeutungen in Schwebe, indem er zwischen dem Zeichen- und dem Gebrauchswert von Dingen Unentscheidbarkeit produziert. Diese Subvertierung von herrschendem Sinn sei aber ebenso wirksam im Humor der Werbung. Im Modus des 'Inventars' werden KünstlerInnen zu SammlerInnen und ArchivarInnen, die in den Dingen die Spur einer gemeinsamen Geschichte finden. Diese Geste neige wiederum dazu "sich in soziale/gemeinschaftliche Berufung umzuwandeln" (S. 68). Im Modus der 'Begegnung' laden Kunstwerke zu "unvorhergesehenen Beziehungen" (ebd.) ein. Diese relationale Kunst tendiere mit ihrem Vorschlag zu neuer Nähe jedoch dazu, lediglich Risse im sozialen Zusammenhalt aufzufüllen. Im 'Mysterium' schließlich sieht Rancière eine ehrgeizigere Form der Begegnung, für die nicht nur das soziale Band, sondern der Sinn der Kopräsenz der Wesen und Dinge, die eine Welt ausmacht, auf dem Spiel stehe. Verschiedenartige Elemente werden hier nicht der Schockwirkung wegen verbunden, sondern um den Akzent auf ihre Verwandtschaft zu legen. Dieses Spiel der Analogien vertraut in die 'Brüderlichkeit der Metaphern' (Jean-Luc Godard). Rancière diagnostiziert aufgrund dieser Bestandsaufnahme Unsicherheit der Kunst sich selbst gegenüber – gerade in einem Moment, in dem sie "durch das Defizit der eigentlichen Politik zu mehr Engagement aufgefordert worden" ist (S. 73). Die letzten drei Texte des Bandes bilden konzentrierte Kritiken an Ausdrucksformen des 'Unbehagens an der Ästhetik': An der (in-)ästhetischen Konzeption Alain Badious, an Jean-François Lyotards Ästhetik des Erhabenen, sowie am globalen Phänomen einer ethischen Wende, in der die Eigenlogiken sowohl von Kunst als auch Politik aufgehoben würden. "Die In-Ästhetik von Alain Badiou: Die Windungen der Moderne" entwickelt neben einer profunden Kritik am 'Hyper-Platonismus' Badious auch eine Kritik am Begriff der Moderne und der Haltung des Modernismus.[3] Badious modernistische Geste, die Reinheit einer anti-mimetischen Kunst zu verteidigen, verfehle die Logik des Ästhetischen, deren neue Identität gerade in ihrer Konfusion mit Nicht-Kunst bestehe. Der Bezug auf ein 'Eigentliches' der Kunst diene dagegen nur der Errichtung von neuen Hierarchien. Rancière spürt in minutiöser Textlektüre Grenzen in Badious Konzeption auf, die offensichtlich werden, wenn es ums Kino geht, einer Kunst der Unreinheit und Mischung. Ziel der in-ästhetischen Trennung von Kunst und Ästhetik sei es letztlich, die Kunst in die "ethische Ununterscheidung zu versenken" (S. 103). In dieser Konsequenz treffe sich Badious Denken mit einem ganz anderen: In "Lyotard und die Ästhetik des Erhabenen: Eine Gegenlektüre von Kant"argumentiert Rancière, dass auch Lyotards Ästhetik des Erhabenen "die gemeinsame Beseitigung von Ästhetik und Politik vollzieht, zugunsten dieses einzigen Gesetzes, das heute den Namen Ethik trägt" (S. 123). Lyotards Begriff des Erhabenen basiere auf einer Lektüre Kants, die den in der "Kritik der Urteilskraft" entwickelten Begriff auf den Kopf stelle. Indem Lyotard das Kunstwerk auf die unaufhebbare Entfremdung gegenüber der Andersheit, den reinen Schock des 'aistethon' verpflichte, annulliere er die Dissensualität der "Metapolitik der Revolution der sinnlichen Welt" und löse sie in ethische Zeugenschaft auf. Lyotards Proklamation des Endes der 'Großen Erzählungen' hätte an die Stelle der Erzählung von der zukünftigen (proletarischen) Emanzipation nur eine andere gesetzt: die einer unvordenklichen und unendlichen Katastrophe – der Vernichtung des europäischen Judentums –, auf der nun eine "Archipolitik der Ausnahme" (bereits S. 55) begründet würde. "Die ethische Wende der Ästhetik und der Politik"setzt schließlich das zuvor entwickelte begriffliche Instrumentarium in eine provokante Beschreibung der Gegenwart um. Rancière diagnostiziert eine globale ethische Wende, die Ästhetik und Politik zunehmend in ihren Bann geschlagen hätte. Das 'Ethos' dieser Wende bestünde nicht in einem Fortschreiten der autonomen Ausübung moralischer Urteilskraft, die zwischen Sein und Sein-Sollen unterscheidet, sondern in der alternativlosen Unterwerfung unter das Gesetz der ethischen Gemeinschaft. Diese Wende trete sowohl im Politischen als auch im Ästhetischen in zwei Gestalten auf, einer 'soft-' und einer 'hard-'Version: So wie Politik in konsensuelle Demokratie einerseits und kriegerischer Durchsetzung "grenzenloser Gerechtigkeit" (G. W. Bush) andererseits aufgelöst würde, verteile sich die Sicht auf die Kunst auf einen Dienst an der Gemeinschaft einerseits und die unendliche Zeugenschaft der Katastrophe andererseits. Laut Rancière kommt dem Begriff der 'Undarstellbarkeit' im Feld der Kunst dabei eine analoge Funktion zu, wie dem Begriff des 'Terrors' im politischen Feld. Gegen die Rede von der 'Undarstellbarkeit', die das religiöse Gesetz wieder in die Kunst einführe, argumentiert Rancière am Beispiel von Claude Lanzmanns Shoah, dass mit dem Wegfall religiöser oder repräsentativer Normen der Un/Darstellbarkeit, die tatsächliche Frage sei, "was man darstellen will und welche Weise man dazu wählen muss. " [.] "Weil alles darstellbar ist und nichts die fiktionale Darstellung von der Vergegenwärtigung des Wirklichen trennt, stellt sich das Problem der Darstellung des Genozids" (S. 143). Rancière ist Dialektiker der Kontingenz, der auf teleologische Rückversicherungen verzichtet. Andererseits entzieht seine Dialektik auch den Begriffen der Differenz und des Anderen – zentrale Kategorien der 'French Theory' von Lévinas, Lacan, Derrida & Deleuze – ihren fundierenden Status. Resümierend plädiert er dafür, jede Theologie der Zeit – sei sie durch eine zukünftige Revolution oder durch ein vergangenes Trauma bestimmt – wie auch das Phantasma der Reinheit von Ästhetik und Politik zurückzuweisen, um den Erfindungen in beiden Feldern "ihren Charakter von immer zweideutigen, vorläufigen und strittigen Einschnitten zurückzugeben" (S. 151). Hier liegt die Bedeutung von Rancières Intervention für einzelwissenschaftliche Forschungsprojekte: Die Analyse von solch konkreten Erfindungen und Einschnitten erhält in dieser Perspektive ihr volles Recht rückerstattet. --- [1] Vgl.
