ABSTRACTTwo important streams of the literature have examined intellectual capital (IC) and knowledge management (KM). Surprisingly, they have developed in parallel, without any empirical research on the relationship between them. This article empirically examines how IC and KM affect each other, and also investigates their consequences, viewing three intermediate consequences (dynamic capabilities, efficiency, and innovativeness) to mediate their effects on firm performance. In addition, this article examines the effects of the organization's culture on IC and KM. To address these issues, a comprehensive model is developed and tested using a combination of survey and secondary data of 533 companies in Taiwan. The results support the theoretical model. Major findings include the following: IC affects KM and dynamic capabilities; KM facilitates innovation but not dynamic capabilities or IC; a learning culture facilitates IC and innovation but not KM; firm performance depends on efficiency and innovation, but not directly on dynamic capabilities; and efficiency does not depend on any of the other constructs in the study. The article's implications for research and practice are examined.

Despite various advantages of Knowledge Management Systems (KMS), a number of factors have been said to be responsible for its failure. The study aims to investigate the reasons of failure in implementation of KMS in Malaysia. Knowledge managers of listed companies in Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchanges (KLSE) constitute the sample society of the study. For analysis of data and testing hypotheses, T-Student Test and Friedman are employed. The results show that expert knowledge, economic factors, infrastructures, rules and regulations, political factors and organizational and managerial factors contribute to failure of attempts for implementation of KMS in Malaysia. Also, in prioritizing the factors, it was highlighted that professional knowledge is the factor with first priority, and, rules and regulations represent the last priority.

This paper proposes a typology of knowledge workers and their respective knowledge actions. The extant literature on the definition of knowledge work actions is examined and evaluated. The existing classifications of roles of knowledge workers are evaluated and extended with additional literature and empirical findings on the definition of a typology of knowledge worker roles. The empirical data in this paper comes from two studies. In the Task Execution Study 20, a knowledge worker had to carry out a selection of prepared tasks. The computer system that the participants were using was equipped with sensors, so that the execution steps of the tasks could be traced and analyzed. The data from the second study comes from a questionnaire survey of knowledge workers, which yielded 43 responses. The paper shows that the sampled users take on all identified knowledge worker roles, and that the knowledge work actions can be recognized in the sensor data from the first study. This paper contributes to the literature by proposing a new way of classifying the roles of knowledge workers and the knowledge actions they perform during their daily work. Furthermore, the paper provides a preliminary understanding of the relation between knowledge‐intense work tasks, the roles they are executed in, and the tools that are used to accomplish the respective tasks. AbstractFrontline workers bring different forms of knowledge to bear on decisions and actions. Even so, knowledge has so far received limited attention in the street-level literature. This article develops a nuanced understanding of what constitutes knowledge in frontline work and shows how different forms of knowledge are mobilized on the ground. Taking a practice-based and abductive approach, the article draws on qualitative data from a multi-sited organizational ethnography in three Danish child welfare agencies as well as insights from a broad range of literature to build a conceptual framework for studying knowledge mobilization in frontline work. The framework delineates three interdependent forms of knowledge—knowledge-that, knowledge-how, and knowledge-by-acquaintance—that are all essential in frontline work. Knowledge-that is explicit and includes research evidence. Knowledge-how is rooted in experience and acquired through practice. Knowledge-by-acquaintance is rooted in encounters and denotes frontline workers' "sense" of a case or situation. The empirical work shows how each form of knowledge is mobilized in practice. The findings yield important insights into the dynamics of knowledge mobilization at the frontlines, including the detrimental effects of rapid turnover, the conditions for realizing ideals such as evidence-based practice and data-driven decision-making, and the potential implications of digitalization and algorithmization.

Although the knowledge gap hypothesis is often mentioned in connection with the social consequences of the Information Society, there is little discussion of its theoretical background or specific empirical evidence. Therefore, this article explores the theoretical potential of the knowledge gap perspective for Internet research and presents data based on two recent Internet surveys, which demonstrate a double digital divide. Access to the Internet in Switzerland is still dominated by well-educated, affluent, young males and between 1997 and 2000 the gap between those who do and those who do not have access widened not narrowed. Furthermore, there are gaps in the use of the Internet too. More educated people use the Internet more actively and their use is more information oriented, whereas the less educated seem to be interested particularly in the entertainment functions of the Internet.

Management of technology and innovation is a topic that has been subjected to a lot of discussions by the academicians and practitioners alike. Furthermore, researchers have emphasized the importance of the role that knowledge management/knowledge sharing can play in promoting innovation in an organization. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the role of social capital and knowledge sharing in achieving innovation capability of an organization. It also discusses the role that knowledge quality might play in fostering the innovation capability of an organization. The basic research model was developed based on an in‐depth review of the extant literature and subsequently tested based on survey data collected from 97 senior executives across multiple pharmaceutical organizations in India. The findings of the partial least squares structural equation modeling indicated that knowledge quality and explicit and tacit knowledge sharing had a significant effect on innovation capability of pharmaceutical organizations in India. It further highlighted that although relational and cognitive social capital play a significant role in improving the quality of shared knowledge among the employees, structural social capital did not have a significant role to play. The findings of this study are expected to aid the pharmaceutical sector to understand the role that knowledge sharing might play in achieving its innovation capability and design knowledge management strategies accordingly.
