Mythic Indian Writing: The Great Indian Novel
Indian mythology has been a matter of great importance not only for Indians but to the people of the world. Despite being variously interpreted during different generations, even today it is highly valuable and guiding force. Tharoor has brought the characters of Mahabharta through the context of Indian independence movement. Freedom fighters who changed the course of events have been aptly found equivalent from the characters of Mahabharta. Characters have been seen from post-colonial perspective. Tharoor has shown his concern for fragmentation of Indian society. The author has carved niche for himself by presenting the story of entire nation. He has shown the imagination of the artist while presenting the story of Mahabharta with a new look. All the characters have become alive in his presentation. Tharoor starts emphasizing from older generation which finally leads to de-emphasizing towards the younger generations. Like Mahabharta, reading re-reading of his novel gives us new perspective. His novel has also influenced moral, cultural lives of thousands of Indians. He tells how Indian people and events shaped India during the struggle for independence from British rule. In contemporary socio-political scenario of India where caste and class still hold their ground and caste-based politics still rules the roost
