Lobbying is an integral part of the political reality of the European Union and a highly competitive and dynamic field of interest groups. This book takes a systematic look at lobbyists in order to broaden our understanding of the staff entrusted with the responsibility of influencing European politics. Who are the European lobbyists? What are their professional backgrounds, career patterns, practices, and beliefs? The study uses a sociological framework to explore the professionalisation and professionalism of the field across national proveniences, policy fields and interest groups, and develops a systematic analysis that considers three different dimensions: occupational patterns, shared knowledge and common convictions. Based on original research that combines in- depth interviews with survey data, European Lobbying demonstrates that European lobbying is a firmly established and highly professionalised métier. In an organisational field characterised by growth, pluralisation and increasing competition, the professional staff contributes to the homogenisation of European lobbying and the marginalisation of other, non- professionalised forms of interest representation. It will therefore appeal to scholars and students of sociology and politics with interest in European studies, European Union politics and the sociology of the professions.

An analysis of Sensory Integration in the view of Occupational Therapy (OT) in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs), which is important for the development of newborn babies, considering the medical and surgical involvement, and the excessive sensory stimuli to which these babies are subjected at a stage when they should be in an intrauterine environment. Occupational Therapy (OT) is fundamental to Sensory Integration as it combines theoretical concepts, the needs of preterm babies, their families and the environment, with practice. An interview script was used to gather information about the units, and nine health professionals who worked in the area, or in pediatrics with premature babies, took part. It was found that there is a great shortage of professionals in the NICU teams, essentially in rehabilitation, and that OT is proving to be an asset in the rehabilitation process of this population.

Professions, as a special (privileged) category of service‐sector occupations, are nowadays perceived as under threat from organizational, economic and political changes. Many of these threats concern the medical profession (and sometimes the legal profession). The use of the discourse of professionalism in other occupational contexts is seldom addressed, however, yet it is this, which is providing a much more interesting challenge to social scientists. In this paper the increased deployment of the concept "professional" is critically discussed and the power of the discourse of professionalism is explored more closely. The increased use of "professionalism" in new and existing occupational contexts is considered as a mechanism for facilitating and promoting social and occupational change. Many of these occupations provide services and often women constitute the bulk of the practitioners in these occupational groups. It is time to look again then at professionalism as a set of persuasive ideas or an ideology and to examine the power of these ideas and this discourse in terms of social order and control of occupational groups and individual "professionalised" practitioners.

This article considers changes in the association between educational attainment and occupational prestige in Germany over time. We argue that the link between attainment and occupational prestige has become weaker over time because of compositional changes in graduate occupational destinations. Prior to higher education expansion, the small elite group of graduates tended to access the occupationally closed and thus more prestigious professions on graduation. As higher education participation expanded, however, an increasing proportion of graduates found employment in less prestigious and more diverse graduate jobs. The results confirm our theoretical expectations. The association between educational attainment and occupational prestige has decreased over time as graduates entered a broader range of jobs and their relative advantage over those with lower levels of qualifications decreased. This can, in fact, be attributed to a merely compositional change among graduates' occupational destinations from prestigious professions towards less prestigious free-market graduate occupations.

There is now ample evidence of a rise in 'non-standard work arrangements' in many industrialised economies, yet only rarely does theoretical and empirical work probe the question of why the risk of temporary employment varies. Focusing on temporary employment, the author extends the scope of closure theory to an entirely new domain. He develops new and highly sophisticated measures with which to document occupational closure by measuring the scarcity of credentials for particular types of occupations and how effectively these credentials signal quality to potential employers. Similarly, by measuring the degree of task specialisation and the uniqueness of the occupations' tasks, this work exceeds previous studies in breadth and precision. These new measures allow the author to demonstrate how professions protect their employees from temporary employment contracts.

This paper documents occupational inheritance – that is, children's inheritance of their parents' occupations – in China, India, and other countries. Among the causes of the prevalence of occupational inheritance, we target two broad categories that impede growth: labor market frictions and barriers to human capital acquisition. Counterfactual experiments based on a tractable occupational choice model suggest that if the impediments mentioned above were reduced to the US levels, labor productivity would grow by 60–75% in China and 107–178% in India. China realized 74–89% of this growth potential from the 1980s to 2009. In addition, this productivity gain is accompanied by a decrease in the correlation of intergenerational incomes.
