The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a global initiative lead by the United Nations to achieve "a better and more sustainable future for all". Given the increasing impact of climate change on the available water resources over the past two decades, a particular attention is paid to water through SDG 6. The SDG-6 aims to "ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all". This goal comes with a set of highly interconnected targets and indicators that are essential for its global and local implementation. Tunisia, as a member of the United Nations, adopted the framework of the SDGs with a particular interest in SDG 6 since Tunisia is considered as one of the highly water stressed countries in North Africa. Despite the growing need for a rapid, yet consistent, implementation of the goal in the country, very few scientific initiatives are working on monitoring the different indicators at the national scale using nationally-produced data. However, lower scale implementation and monitoring of SDG 6 indicators are essential to provide a consistent overview of the current state of water resources in the country. The current data infrastructure in Tunisia represents a major constraint, since the water-related information is poorly monitored and not accessible at the regional scale. This is due to the complex water institutional system, which is mostly dominated by the lack of coordination and communication between the different data providers. Nevertheless, over the past decade, participatory approaches for water monitoring have been getting more attention in many parts of the world, especially with the emergence of novel cost-effective smart technologies. Such participatory approaches are often referred to as Citizen Science (CS). With CS, citizens are involved in scientific activities, such as environmental monitoring, and they also can be a valuable part of decision making and policy formulation. Together with the generic available data, in particular from remote sensing technology, CS could be tested and implemented in Tunisia in order to improve the access to available and reliable data. The main objective of this thesis was to strengthen the scientific basis for participatory approaches in conjunction with public available environmental data to support the monitoring of water resources in Tunisia. The strengthening of water observation is expected to improve the monitoring of the SDG 6 indicators in Tunisia. The study is focused on the Medjerda catchment, which is the most important river basin in Tunisia and considered as the largest national water resource. The focus was first put on the calculation of the water stress SDG 6 indicator (6.4.2). This indicator was selected as a specific case in this study since water stress is very relevant for the considered catchment. The indicator was evaluated at the scale of the Medjerda catchment and 4 regions within for the period 2000-2016. The spatial and temporal disaggregation was based on analysis of both governmental and remote sensing data, and provided a valuable understanding of the seasonal and regional behavior of water stress. The lack of access to reliable official data was the major constraint in measuring the water stress indicator. The second research section of the thesis was then dedicated to the improvement of the water-related database of the Medjerda catchment through data collection and the creation of a publicly available and standardized online platform "Together4Water", which provides access and dynamic visualizations of the collected data as well as interactive real-time communication tool with users. Consequently, we introduced in the third section of this work the concept of CS as a complementary source of data in Tunisia. The approach was based on the engagement of everyday citizens of a test region within the Medjerda catchment in monitoring rainfall, discharge, and water quality using cost-effective tools. Focus was mainly put on rainfall and discharge monitoring. The Together4Water website was the base for reaching a wide range of citizens from different generations in the test region allowing the initiative to engage a group of volunteers in data collection. For rainfall, traditional low-cost rain gauges were used at multiple locations, while the data transmission was ensured through the Together4Water website. Results yield a good agreement between citizens' observations and the official rainfall data. For discharge, a publicly available smartphone app "Discharge app" was used to estimate river flow of the Medjerda at two locations. A Data fusion technique was then used to validate and combine citizens' estimations to generate unique yet higher quality discharge datasets for both locations. Finally, an assessment of the potential contribution of the CS initiative to the SDG 6 monitoring was performed. We conclude that around 54% of the goal's indicators could be supported by our CS initiative, which emphasizes the value of public engagement in SDG 6 monitoring. ; (AGRO - Sciences agronomiques et ingénierie biologique) -- UCL, 2021

AbstractChanging the way citizens behave toward sustainability is essential to achieve the SDGs. Citizens can help create a more prosperous planet for future generations by making sustainable decisions and engaging in environmentally friendly behaviors. This position paper draws attention to how social marketing can encourage pro-environmental behavior conducive to achieving the environmental Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations (UN) as part of the 2030 Agenda. The paper also offers critical analysis of earlier studies employing a social marketing approach to influence participants' behavior in favor of environmental sustainability. Recommendations for social marketing practitioners and researchers are provided. These recommendations center on two issues: how to develop and implement successful environmental social marketing programs and how to use communication more effectively.

Implementing the 2030 Agenda in an integrated way poses new challenges to political institutions and processes. In order to exploit synergies and to mitigate trade-offs between the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), innovative governance approaches are needed. National bodies to coordinate SDG implementation were being created as of late 2015. As a basis for future analyses on effectiveness, it is important to know if, and which, institutional designs are in place to implement the SDGs and why they were chosen. Against this background, this Discussion Paper analyses how political factors influence institutional design choices when it comes to implementing the SDGs. The aim of this paper is twofold: First, it seeks to assess governments' proposals for institutional designs for SDG implementation at the national level and to identify patterns of institutional designs. It does so by analysing and coding the Voluntary National Reviews from 2016 and 2017 of 62 signatory states, including OECD and none-OECD countries from all world regions and income groups. Second, it aims to explain which political and socio-economic factors shaped these institutional designs. The empirical analysis shows that the majority of countries have opted for a design that promotes political support at the highest level and cross-sectoral, horizontal integration, but has significant shortcomings in terms of social inclusiveness and vertical coordination across different levels of government. When asking which determinants shape these patterns, our findings reveal that horizontal integration becomes more likely with higher socio-economic development. Moreover, we find that vertical integration and societal integration are interdependent and mutually enforcing. Based on our findings, we formulate policy recommendations regarding the institutional requirements for integrated SDG implementation.

This presented study discusses problems related to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goal 1: No Poverty, aimed at eliminating poverty, based on the example of the Visegrad Group (V4) countries. The introduction addresses the general characteristics of the V4 and attempts to define the concept of sustainable development, with particular emphasis on its complex nature and importance for future generations. The purpose of the research was to assess the diversity within the Visegrad Group countries in the years 2005–2018 in terms of poverty and sustainable development level in the No Poverty area and also to identify the impact of the socioeconomic development level in the studied countries on sustainable development in the No Poverty area. Taking into account the analysis of poverty indicators in the Visegrad Group countries, the best results were recorded for Czechia. The second part of the conducted analyzed allowed us to conclude that Czechia definitely presents the highest level of sustainable development, followed by Slovakia. The highest average dynamics of changes occur in Poland and Hungary, which result in the gradual elimination of the existing disproportions. Given the complex nature of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), there are increasing calls for new inclusive and bottom-up governance mechanisms in building a relationship between governments and their citizens, in particular, the youth, to localise the 2030 Agenda. But such successful bottom-up multi-stakeholder engagement tools have yet to emerge in practice. Hence, of specific interest in this study is exploring bottom-up approaches useful for localising the SDGs and harnessing real transformative change to leave no one behind by 2030. Using a case study from the UK, we present a novel integrated mechanism to achieve this. An integrated Social Innovation (SI) and Scenarios Thinking (ST) mechanism remains a valuable bottom-up tool capable of empowering citizens, including the youth and decision-makers in delivering coherent SDGs plans, policies, and programmes. The study reveals that although the SDGs are distinct, they are also interconnected. A scenario development workshop with youth with no prior knowledge of the SDGs showed a common thread of policy measures for different SDG future images. Standard policy measures amongst different SDGs call for an equitable society at all levels; that all energy sources be from clean and renewable sources; investment in low-carbon technologies and research; and financial support for promoting sustainable transportation and consumption measures. This study highlights that we need to change how we think and talk about SDGs and recommends socially innovative steps to embrace cross-sectoral and nexus thinking as the backdrop of the citizen science concept. We conclude that the SDGs should not become a performative exercise or failed social experiment. And any practical localisation from the UN's Member States across the northern and southern hemispheres will require robust measures addressing future-oriented systemic thinking, inclusivity and good governance, together with standards for community resilience and sustainability.

Purpose
This study aims to offer a mid-range theory conceptualization of factors central to understanding and facilitating business actor engagement (BAE). Reports on a study of real estate companies and their sustainable development goal (SDG) driven business initiatives. The aim is to identify the factors that need to be in place to facilitate positive engagement amongst actors in business-to-business (B2B) settings.


Design/methodology/approach
A case study of real estate companies (landlords of business premises) and their business customers (tenants of offices and warehouses) – comprising interviews and workshops – offer insights related to the factors that need to be in place to facilitate BAE types and outcomes.


Findings
The identified central factors of BAE – needed to understand and facilitate positive engagement to unfold – are the actors' perception of: willingness (to act), resourcefulness (to contribute and solve issues) and influence (to affect decisions) regarding solutions related to the business initiative at hand. Failing to facilitate these factors may result in negative outcomes of BAE where "engagement" merely constitutes perceived obligations and responsibilities.


Research limitations/implications
The study offers theoretical and managerial insights on how to manage the factors needed for BAE. It also sheds light on how actors can use SDG-driven business initiatives to achieve sustainability goals.


Originality/value
It contributes to the concept of BAE, by emphasizing the dynamics of engagement, from the motivational and behavioral dimensions specific to B2B settings. It offers insights how to managerially cogovern rather than control BAE. It presents central factors needed to include and capacitate customers, facilitating successful implementations of SDG-driven business initiatives to reduce absent or negative outcomes.
