The paucity of human factors work in computer system design is noted, and reasons for this are elaborated with particular reference to computer-based management information systems. The main obstacle to such human factors endeavor would appear to be the lack of appropriate investigatory techniques. To remedy this deficiency a method is proposed which derived from the field of psychotherapy. Pilot studies are reported which demonstrate the technique and indicate how the data obtained may be interpreted. An appraisal of the potential of this technique in the management information system field is presented.

Systematic interdisciplinary research on usability that takes gender into account is still in its infancy. These conference proceedings document the first German language symposium devoted to this theme. The papers include examples from research and practice, recommendations for gender-sensitive software design, and theoretically grounded approaches for reflecting on gender in the usability engineering process and in HCI research.

The importance and number of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) operations are rapidly growing in both military and civilian applications. This growth has produced significant manpower issues, producing a desire that multiple aircraft are controlled by a single operator as opposed to the current model where one aircraft may require multiple operators. A potential issue is the need for an operator to monitor radio traffic for the call signs of multi-aircraft. An investigation of the use of 3D sound was undertaken to investigate whether an automatic parser, which preselected the spatial location of relevant versus irrelevant call signs, could aid UAV operators in increasing performance with reduced workload. Furthermore, because the 3D audio system may not guarantee 100% reliability, human performance with the 3D audio system was also collected when they were informed announcement that errors were possible and when the reliability level was less than 100%. This investigation included development of a human performance model, simulation of human performance and workload, and a human subject study. Consequently, promising effects of the 3D audio system on multi-aircraft control were found. This novel and unique use of 3D sound is discussed, and significant improvements in response time and workload are demonstrated.

Modern Web-based Information Systems (WIS) must be flexible and prepared to be easily accessible and manageable in real-time. WIS user interfaces (UI) are still being constructed on the basis of traditional software development paradigms, without taking into account in their construction (or in the knowledge managed by the systems) the main criterion of globalization, that they must be distributed, open and changing. WIS-UI must be able to be constructed depending on the type of interaction (individual or collective) and the purpose of the interaction (management, technical, etc.). In this paper, the authors present a component-based development perspective to build user interfaces of WIS by means of the composition of widgets-components architectures and MDD approaches.

Four experiments were performed to examine how natural language conventions might be used to improve the user interface for systems using automatic speech recognition (ASR). Two new technological developments offered us this opportunity: word spotting permits recognition of key words embedded in extraneous speech; barge in permits the user to speak to the system while it plays instructional prompts. Our goal was to take advantage of natural language conventions to design an optimal prompting arrangement that would accommodate both novice and expert users. The conversational conventions we focused on included people's readiness to speak in response to a direct question and during an appropriately timed conversational pause. We studied these conventions in the context of an automated operator service. Our results indicated that a prompt-arranged as a leading question, followed by a brief pause and then a list of key words-met our goals for both the initial prompt and, if ASR failed. a subsequent reprompt. This approach resulted in fast, accurate responding, a user interface that received high user acceptance ratings, and an interface that was usable by both novice and expert users.

It is concerned with the control of devices around us such as computing gears & even automobiles in the near future without really the physical intervention of the user. It helps bridge the communication gap between the society and the disabled. This mainly lays its focus on people suffering from brainstem stroke, going through a spinal cord injury or even blindness. BCI helps such patients to retain or restore communication with the outside world through intelligent signals from the brain due to the high risk of paralysis under such circumstances. This is achieved by a signal acquisition technique and converting these signals available from the sensors placed on the scalp into real-time computer commands that can be visually operated and understood. It has nothing to do with the natural neural transmission of brain signals but extracts them with the help of sensors to be processed and direct the outputs to an external device. This may also prove to be a major military gadget where troops may communicate their thoughts in highly stressed situations without breaking the hush.
