'Brothers at War: Making sense of the Eritrean-Ethiopian war' by T. Negash and K. Tronvoll is reviewed.
A reflection on the social & psychological roots of interpersonal violence in an agropastoral Suri society of southern Ethiopia is based on direct observation during fieldwork carried out 1991-1994. It is contended that gaining insight into violence within a group requires understanding the cultural backgrounds/commitments of those involved in light of an underlying theory of human behavior/motivation. Violence/aggression expressed in rituals & dueling have long been part of Suri life, as reflected in oral traditions/narratives. An incident involving the shooting of four girls from a neighboring ethnic group is examined to explore the link between violent aggression, kinship, & reproductive chances in interethnic conflict. The Suri social structure is described, along with how recent sociopolitical changes & ecological crises have affected social organization, especially in relation to trading/exchanging, & counterraiding between Suri & their neighbors. Changing internal/external conditions & recurring ecological crises that threatened group security served to deritualize Suri violent behavior, & subvert traditional concerns of balanced reciprocity/altruistic behavior, resulting in a response of "real" violence within & outside the group. 29 References.
