Part of a symposium on the Marx-Engels Gesamtausgabe, it is contended that the Marx-Engels Gesamtausgabe permits critical investigation of Karl Marx's late writings on non-Western societies & gender issues. Scrutiny of Marx's writing on China, India, & Russia composed between 1848 & 1859 demonstrated that Marx offered a nonpartisan understanding of colonialism, ethnicity, & nationalism. Although Marx did not provide a comprehensive approach to multilinear development in these early writings, it is contended that his 1872-1883 writings did attempt to replace a unilinear model of development with a multilinear perspective. Scrutiny of Marx's notes on the French-language edition of Capital, volume 1; the viability of Russian villages as locations for socialist development; & ethnological studies of clan systems in non-Western states is performed, revealing support for such an assertion. Moreover, it is claimed that Marx's ethnological notebooks of 1879-1882 & his unpublished writings on Indonesia & Rome illustrated his engagement with gender issues in pre-capitalist societies. 1 Table, 30 References.
