A review essay on books by (1) Jack Donnelly, Realism in International Relations (Cambridge: Cambridge U Press, 2000); (2) Tim Dunne, Inventing International Society: A History of the English School (London: Macmillan, 1998); (3) Brian Schmidt, The Political Discourse of Anarchy: A Disciplinary History of International Relations (Albany, NY: State U New York Press, 1998); & (4) Richard Tuck, The Rights of War and Peace: Political Thought and the International Order from Grotius to Kant (Oxford: Oxford U Press, 1999). These books represent the recent focus on the history of political thought by European international relations scholars. Tuck's volume updates his 1991 Carlyle Lectures at Oxford U to look at tensions between "oratorical & theological" approaches to the justification of war among a group of thinkers ranging from Grotius to Kant. Although Donnelly's textbook has flaws as a historical survey, his inclusive account of contemporary realism considers its strengths, weaknesses, ambiguities, & contradictions. Schmidt's book reveals persistent myths surrounding the theoretical debate in international relations that have hindered its development, & Dunne's history of the English school not only describes its origins & evolution, but calls attention to its "radical potentiality" as a source of contemporary constructivist thinking. 28 References.
