It is argued that voluntary associations are interstitial in character, providing needed linkages between society's institutions. More heterogeneous societies require greater numbers of associations to represent divergent interests and at the same time to prevent these varied interests from leading to personal and social disorganization. Analysis of data from five nations shows a correspondence between national diversity and voluntary organization affiliation. The correspondence is interpreted as partial support for the thesis advanced.

In a study of personal influence networks instrumental in the decision to participate in assoc sponsored teaching conferences, the members of 5 professional societies were interviewed. Interpersonal contact was found to be more prominent than the MM as conference participation became increasingly salient. Contrary to earlier res, separate soc networks were not found to be instrumental at diff points in time, the reason being that early contacts were members of soc, professional, & org'al networks interlocked by common membership. This finding is consistent with the interpretation that early contacts are with friends while later discussions are with persons usually seen in a more formal context. Finally, personal influence was found to be more crucial in converting the neophyte (changing behavior) & reinforcing earlier modes of behavior than in recapturing the person who deviates from an earlier pattern. The findings of the present study indicate that broadcasters & publishers have the ability to manipulate news consumption. By altering the f, time, space, location, & pictorial content in their presentation of news events, media users' consumption of news (as measured by recall) can be altered. However, when learning is related to a highly motivated interest in an event, the effect of manipulating these variables is limited. Data for the study was obtained by monitoring all news media on 5 test days & interviewing the sample of 63 adults at the close of each test day. AA.
