Researchers who gather data from several different groups frequently face the problem of response set bias. The ipsative process is a technique which can reduce such bias by adding a constant to each standardized score of each subject such that the sum of all scores is the same as for every other subject, scores then being transformed into standard scores by columns once again. Data from four surveys of consumer preferences in 4 different countries are used to illustrate this process. 3 Tables. Modified HA.
