Competing theoretical models have been proposed to explain the effects of political democracy on such development outcomes as economic growth & socioeconomic equality: democracy as (1) facilitating development, (2) a hindrance to development, & (3) bearing no independent relationship to development outcomes. Each of these theoretical models is explicated, & then evidence provided by the approximately 12 studies for each outcome is evaluated, distinguishing the studies by such design characteristics as sample, period observed, measures used, & form of relationship specified. While it does not produce definitive support for any of the models, this procedure does assist in interpreting the results of past research as well as generating guidelines for future investigations. 9 Tables, 75 References.
