Part of a review symposium, this article discusses a study by the Danish Instit of International Affairs, Humanitarian Intervention: Legal and Political Aspects (Copenhagen: Gullanders Bogtrykkeri a-s, 1999). This text examines the legal & political implications of using military intervention to resolve human rights & other humanitarian violations in third-party states. The Danish Instit of International Affairs' (DUPI) distinction between authorized & unauthorized intervention is discussed. Instances of humanitarian intervention are deemed legally problematic since international law has failed to stipulate guidelines for legitimizing intervention. Despite this uncertainty, it is claimed that a political approach is needed to determine the legitimacy of intervention. Consequently, the DUPI's separation of approaches toward humanitarian intervention into legal & political categories is heavily critiqued. In addition, the DUPI's argument that the UN Security Council should remain outside the realm of international law in humanitarian intervention cases is questioned & deemed imperialistic. The DUPI's text is ultimately viewed as a significant reference work, especially for existing studies on humanitarian intervention. 6 References. J. W. Parker
