At the end of the 20th century, the cornerstone of Australia-People's Republic of China relations continued to be their economic ties. Both countries were willing to give top priority to those issues, primarily economic, that united them & to deemphasize those where they were definitely at odds, such as human rights. This was obvious during Chinese President Jiang Zemin's visit to Australia in Sept 1999, which was a highlight in bilateral relations. The issues with the most potential to damage Australia-China relations were Taiwan, Tibet, & East Timor. Although Canberra persisted in its one-China policy, it offered no support to Beijing for any military action against Taiwan if the island declared independence. Australia-China relations were not directly involved in East Timor, but the crisis there raised the question of whether other Asian territories, notably Tibet, might demand independence & how Canberra would respond. 1 Table, 40 References.
