Associação entre qualidade de vida e atividades desenvolvidas por idosos no Rio Grande do Sul
In: PAJAR: pan American journal of aging research, Band 5, Heft 2, S. 47
ISSN: 2357-9641
Aim: To verify the association between older adults' health-related quality of life and the performance of different activities, adjusting the results for sociodemographic variables and health indicators.Method: Secondary analysis of the "Older Adults' Profile in the RS state" database, a descriptive, cross-sectional, home-based study with 7315 community-dwelling older adults from the Rio Grande do Sul State. The older adults' quality of life, in the physical and mental domains, was assessed by the SF-12 questionnaire, and the associated variables, including activities and health indicators were selfreported measures. T Student test, ANOVA or simple linear regression, depending on the type of variable, were used for simple statistical analysis, followed by adjusted multiple analysis. Results: Participated in the study 6052 older adults, 51.4% women, mainly in the 60-69 age group. Most of the variables studied showed a significant association with quality of life, in both domains, in the simple analysis. However, in the adjusted model, only the variables years of study, number of morbidities and performance of domestic and autonomous activities remained statistically significant in the physical and mental domains of quality of life. Conclusion: The development of activities is important for the older adults' quality of life and, therefore, the society should have more stimulating and inclusive activities for this population group, taking into account accessibility and diversity, including elderly older adults from different age groups, educational status, habits and values.

Diferenças de sexo na relação entre indicadores de força e resistência muscular de membros inferiores e a presença de incontinência urinária em nonagenários e centenários
In: PAJAR: pan American journal of aging research, Band 6, Heft 2, S. 42
ISSN: 2357-9641
Aims: To verify the possible relation between urinary incontinence and lower limbs strength and resistance indicators and the sex influence in this relation. Methods: Cross-sectional and analytical study with nonagenarians and centenarians from "Multiprofessional Attention to the oldest-old" project. Presence of incontinence, the ease to walking and climbing stairs, Timed up and Go test, sex, age, marital status and depression symptoms were the study variables. Descriptive and analytical analysis (chi-square tests, analysis of variance and univariate and sex-adjusted logistic regression) were performed accepting p<0.05.Results: We evaluated 238 oldest-old, 174 women. The ease of walking 400 meters and stand up from a chair and the time during the Timed Up and Go were significant indicators of muscle strength and resistance in the correlation between incontinence and muscle strength and resistance adjusted by sex (respectively, RC=0.832, p=0.011, RC=0.846, p=0.012 and RC=0.352, p=0.002). Sex was the most significantly related to incontinence (RC=0.349, p=0.001) and its presence in the complete model decreased the significance of other variables. Depressive symptoms increase the chance of presenting incontinence in men. Conclusions: Incontinence can be associated with strength and resistance in lower limbs, mainly in women. Strength and resistance exercises focus on lower limbs can be added to traditional and recognized prevention programs to incontinence.
Experimental signatures of an absorbing-state phase transition in an open driven many-body quantum system
Understanding and probing phase transitions in nonequilibrium systems is an ongoing challenge in physics. A particular instance are phase transitions that occur between a nonfluctuating absorbing phase, e.g., an extinct population, and one in which the relevant order parameter, such as the population density, assumes a finite value. Here, we report the observation of signatures of such a nonequilibrium phase transition in an open driven quantum system. In our experiment, rubidium atoms in a quasi-one-dimensional cold disordered gas are laser excited to Rydberg states under so-called facilitation conditions. This conditional excitation process competes with spontaneous decay and leads to a crossover between a stationary state with no excitations and one with a finite number of excitations. We relate the underlying physics to that of an absorbing-state phase transition in the presence of a field (i.e., off-resonant excitation processes) which slightly offsets the system from criticality. We observe a characteristic power-law scaling of the Rydberg excitation density as well as increased fluctuations close to the transition point. Furthermore, we argue that the observed transition relies on the presence of atomic motion which introduces annealed disorder into the system and enables the formation of long-ranged correlations. Our study paves the road for future investigations into the largely unexplored physics of nonequilibrium phase transitions in open many-body quantum systems. ; The research leading to these results has received funding from the European Research Council under the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme (FP/2007-2013) / ERC Grant Agreement No.335266 (ESCQUMA), the EU-FET grant HAIRS 612862 and from the University of Nottingham.
The event, like all events at the ICI Berlin, is open to the public, free of charge. The audience is presumed to consent to a possible recording on the part of the ICI Berlin. If you would like to attend the event yet might require assistance, please contact Event Management.Throughout its history, cinema has developed different modes of addressing spectators. Incorporating approaches from aesthetic and social theory, »Perspectives on the Public Sphere: Cinematic Configurations of ›I‹ and ›We‹« investigates the public sphere in the context of the complex state of contemporary media. More specifically, the conference will focus on the reciprocity between the individual »I«, which can — to simplify matters somewhat — stand for subjectivity, affect, and the individual spectator's perception, and the social »we« of film as a mass medium, which has frequently been the focus of various utopias and theories at the intersection of politics and aesthetics since the 1920s. Teaching Cheminformatics through a Collaborative Intercollegiate Online Chemistry Course (OLCC)
[Image: see text] While cheminformatics skills necessary for dealing with an ever-increasing amount of chemical information are considered important for students pursuing STEM careers in the age of big data, many schools do not offer a cheminformatics course or alternative training opportunities. This paper presents the Cheminformatics Online Chemistry Course (OLCC), which is organized and run by the Committee on Computers in Chemical Education (CCCE) of the American Chemical Society (ACS)'s Division of Chemical Education (CHED). The Cheminformatics OLCC is a highly collaborative teaching project involving instructors at multiple schools who teamed up with external chemical information experts recruited across sectors, including government and industry. From 2015 to 2019, three Cheminformatics OLCCs were offered. In each program, the instructors at participating schools would meet face-to-face with the students of a class, while external content experts engaged through online discussions across campuses with both the instructors and students. All the material created in the course has been made available at the open education repositories of LibreTexts and CCCE Web sites for other institutions to adapt to their future needs.
