During the Great War elites of Western Europe were forced to decide on their perception of Eastern Europe, on a new political order after the end of the war, and to think out how to keep the balance between Russia and Germany and what to do with increasing ambitions of Soviet Russia to regain control over the territories of the former Russian Empire. Neben historischen Quellen stellen die Analogien bis ins Jahr 2022 und der brutalen Invasion auf die Ukraine einen enormen Mehrwert dieser Veröffentlichung dar. Der weltbekannte Russland-Experte, Prof. Andrzej Nowak, enthüllt die Grundlagen der russischen Mentalität und Aggressivität, wobei er bis in die Gründungszeit des polnischen Staats und der Kiewer Rus zurückblickt. Damals war Moskau nur ein Fleckchen wilder Erde. Der Autor erklärt dabei, dass die Rus keineswegs mit Russland gleichzusetzen ist. Erst im 15. Jahrhundert begann man am königlichen Krakauer Hof das Herzogtum Moskau als eine militärische Bedrohung anzusehen. Mehrere Jahrhunderte von Moskau ausgelöster Kriege brachten ihm zunächst Niederlagen ein, darunter auch bei der schrecklichen Schlacht bei Kluschino (1610). Doch in der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts demütigte Katharina II. (eine gebürtige Deutsche) die polnische Adelsrepublik, indem sie einen ihrer Liebhaber auf den Warschauer Thron setzte, polnische Senatoren entführen ließ und schließlich die Teilungen Polens einleitete. Um die Kriege zu rechtfertigen, wurden Argumente verwendet, die wir auch noch heute hören – der angebliche Schutz der orthodoxen Bevölkerung sowie die Vereinigung aller Ruthenen unter einem Zepter (die in der Propaganda des Kremls als Russen angesehen werden). Andrzej Nowak führt uns durch das Heldentum der polnischen Aufstände im 19. Jahrhundert bis hin zum großen Sieg 1920 über die Sowjetunion, der die Weltgeschichte für immer veränderte. Betont wird dabei die stetige, seit 1517 andauernde deutsch-russische Zusammenarbeit, die in den Verbrechen des Zweiten Weltkriegs gipfelte. Nowak zeigt die Kluft auf, die das westeuropäische Polen von dem tatarischen Russland trennte. Während in Polen Zehntausende Adlige in demokratischen Wahlen über das Schicksal des Staates entschieden, brach in Russland die Opritschnina aus – eine Zeit des brutalen Terrors und der Macht der staatlichen Geheimdienste. Während an der Weichsel Tausende Bücher und politische Schriften veröffentlicht wurden, konnte im zaristischen Imperium kaum jemand lesen oder schreiben, an öffentliche Schulen war nicht zu denken. Die Angst vor der polnischen Adelsrepublik wuchs stetig an und mit ihr auch der Hass. Wieso glaubt der Westen seit Jahrhunderten an die guten Absichten Moskaus und fällt seiner Propaganda zum Opfer? Wieso gibt es in der Geschichte Moskaus so viel Brutalität, Gewalt und Rückständigkeit? Wieso griff Moskau blutrünstig seine Nachbarn an, wie beispielsweise Polen im Jahre 1939, Georgien 2008 oder die Ukraine 2022? In "Polen und Russland" finden wir Antworten auf diese Fragen. Andrzej Nowak stützt seine Analyse auf bislang unbekannten Dokumenten und Nachforschungen, die er seiner Zeit in den Moskauer Archiven unternahm. Dieses ansprechende, illustrierte Buch wird viele Leser aufrütteln.

The main aim of this paper is to show that behind the complex and fluid surface dimension of the Polish political scene it is possible to reveal a relatively stable two-dimensional structure of deep political identities. The study is based on the analysis of ecological data — the results of elections from 1990 to 1997. The results prove the exceptional stability of the Polish electoral geography and appear to be consistent with other studies based mainly on the survey data. The use of the spatial data allowed us to reveal the historical and spatial determinants of electoral behavior in Poland.
