The Confucian revival, which manifests itself in the modern Confucian current, belongs to the most inf luential and important streams of thought in contemporary Chinese philosophy and represents a crucial part of the new prevailing ideologies in P. R. China. Although many books and articles on this topic are available in Chinese, academic studies in Western languages are still few and far between. The present article aims to introduce this stream of thought which is grounded in the conviction that traditional Confucianism, understood as a specifically Chinese social, political, and moral system of thought can, if renewed and adapted to meet the conditions of the modern era, serve as the foundation for an ethically meaningful modern life. Simultaneously, modern Confucian philosophers also aim to provide a spiritual antidote to the alienation which is seen by them as a collateral effect of the capitalistic glorification of competition and the single-minded pursuit of profit. The scholars belonging to this stream sought to reconcile 'Western' and 'traditional Chinese' values, in order to create a theoretical model of modernization that would not be confused or equated with 'Westernization'.
Fang Dongmei (1899–1977) je eden osrednjih predstavnikov druge generacije modernega konfucijanstva, četudi se sam nikoli ni izrecno izrekel samo za konfucijanca, temveč je vselej poudarjal, da je po duši poleg tega tudi daoist in budist. Vsekakor je teoretski doprinos tega, na zahodu še vedno precej neznanega modernega filozofa k moderni kitajski filozofiji vreden podrobnejše obravnave. Pričujoči članek se osredotoča predvsem na analizo in interpretacijo ontoloških in epistemoloških vidikov njegove filozofije, pri čemer so v ospredju njegovi koncepti celostne harmonije, konfucijanskega moralnega sebstva, ustvarjalne ustvarjalnosti, enotnosti dejstev in vrednot, ter razuma in intuicije.
Though the Confucian system of thought, society, and government has a long history in Korea, Chinese Confucian scholars, preoccupied with the urgency of "saving the Confucian essence" used only Japan as a reference in Asia. Therefore, the present article aims to introduce Dasan 茶山 (Jeong Yak-yong 정약용, 1762–1836), who was one of the main representatives of Korean Confucian philosophy. It exposes his significance for the full-range understanding of the landscape of this important traditional East Asian stream of thought as well as for the intellectual syntheses between Confucian teachings and the Christian religion. The author analyses Dasan's thought from the Sinological perspective and exposes several elements which represent an elaboration and an upgrading of traditional Chinese Neo-Confucian philosophy.
As a major source of social values, Modern Confucian theory assumes essential significance amidst the proliferation of instrumental rationality in contemporary China. This current is distinguished by a multifaceted attempt to revitalize traditional thought by means of new influences borrowed or derived from Western systems. It defines itself with a search for a synthesis between "Western" and traditional Chinese thought, aiming to elaborate a new system of ideas and values, suitable for the modern, globalized society. The present contribution examines the ways in which 3rd generation of Modern Confucian philosophers changed the framework within which traditional Chinese philosophical inquiry has been carried out, exposing the importance of immanent transcendence.

Zato namerava pričujoči članek predstaviti Dasana 茶山 (Jeong Yak-yonga 정약용, 1762–1836), ki sodi h glavnim predstavnikom korejske konfucijanske filozofije. Izpostavlja njegov pomen za celovitejše razumevanje širokega spektra te pomembne vzhodnoazijske idejne struje in za vzpostavljanje miselnih sintez med konfucijanskimi nauki in krščansko religijo. Avtorica analizira Dasanovo miselnost iz sinološke perspektive in v njej izpostavi vrsto elementov, ki predstavljajo nadgradnjo tradicionalne kitajske neokonfucijanske filozofije.
The present article deals with the idea of the "harmonious society," which is at the core of contemporary social ideologies in the P. R. China. This concept is examined from three perspectives: the official state interpretations of the concept of harmony (he 和 or hexie 和諧), and the classical and Modern Confucian elucidations. The author concludes that official political interpretations from the P.R. China mainly follow Xunzi's classical elaboration of this concept, which is in the legalist tradition and implies autocratic elements, whereas the philosophic interpretations written by the Taiwanese Modern Confucians generally elaborate the Mencian, i.e. the more egalitarian and democratic stream of classical Confucian thought. ; Predmet pričujočega članka je raziskava ideje »harmonične družbe«, ki je v središču aktualnih družbenih ideologij L. R. Kitajske. Avtorica razišče kitajski koncept harmonije (he ali hexie) z vidika treh različnih perspektiv: uradne interpretacije sodobnih ideologov, klasičnih pomenov in moderno konfucianskih nadgradenj. Pokaže se, da uradne interpretacije v glavnem sledijo Xunzijevemu razumevanju tega koncepta, ki vsebuje vrsto avtokratskih elementov, medtem ko Moderni konfucianci večinoma izhajajo iz Mencijeve, t.j. bolj egalitarne in demokratične struje klasičnega konfucianizma.
Članek obravnava idejo harmonične družbe, ki tvori jedro aktualnih družbenih ideologij v L. R. Kitajski. V ta namen jo osvetli iz treh zornih kotov, namreč skozi analizo uradnih državnih, klasičnih in modernih konfucijanskih interpretacij koncepta harmonije (he 和, hexie 和諧). Avtorica ugotovi, da uradna interpretacija teoretikov L.R. Kitajske večinoma sloni na Xunzijevi (torej legalistično – avtokratski) nadgradnji tega koncepta, medtem ko sledijo tajvanski moderni konfucijanci v svojih interpretacijah predvsem mencijanski, na idejah človečnosti in enakovrednosti temelječi, idejni liniji klasičnega konfucijanstva.
The present issue of our academic journal, Asian and African Studies, represents one of the many results of such cooperation. The authors are internationally established and well-known Taiwanese scholars with whom the Department of Asian and African Studies has been collaborating in the areas of social studies and humanities for several years. The articles in this volume are published in Chinese, because it is our firm belief that sinological research cannot remain limited to sources in Western languages. The volume not only represents a bridge which links Slovenian and international sinologists to Taiwanese scholarship; it also provides an opportunity for direct insight into the original sources, defining this discourse. Such a decision of the editorial board is based on the conviction that the incorporation of material in native language into any intercultural research framework provides a more objective, and at the same time, hermeneutically more proper understanding of the complex problems under investigation.
