Celem artykułu jest próba oceny poziomu metodologicznego polskich prac awansowych młodego pokolenia geografów społeczno-ekonomicznych w kontekście utrzymania tożsamości dyscypliny, w sytuacji starzenia się oraz odchodzenia seniorów – liderów dotychczasowych przemian geografii. Na pokoleniu doktoryzujących się i habilitujących się osób ciąży wymóg nie tylko utrzymania dotychczasowego poziomu teoretyczno-metodologicznego dyscypliny, ale również jej rozwoju.Poczucie własnej tożsamości środowiska geografów jest nie tylko istotnym elementem identyfikacyjnym dyscypliny, ale stanowi jedną z ważnych składowych poziomu rozwoju metodologicznego. Metodologia determinuje nie tylko poprawność formalną prowadzonych badań naukowych, ale poprzez stały rozwój kadrowy pozwala rozwijać warsztat metodyczny i konceptualizację dotychczasowego stanu wiedzy. Dlatego tak ważna jest odpowiednia jakość metodologiczna prac awansowych. Przegląd reprezentacyjnego zbioru prac habilitacyjnych z geografii społeczno-ekonomicznej ostatniego dziesięciolecia pozwala zauważyć szereg mankamentów, niedoskonałości powstałych zarówno z winy autorów, jak i zmieniających się zewnętrznych uwarunkowań funkcjonowania nauki. Wyraźny spadek zainteresowania metodologią wśród geografów wynika nie tylko z odchodzenia najstarszej grupy badaczy mających szersze spojrzenie na kwestię integralności wiedzy geograficznej, zdających sobie także sprawę z konsekwencji nadmiernej specjalizacji. Widoczny jest niedostatek odwoływania się do pojęć kluczowych warunkujących powiązania między geografią fizyczną a społeczno-ekonomiczną. Wielu badaczy wskazuje tutaj na częsty brak integrującego pojęcia regionu geograficznego i środowiska geograficznego. Niepokój budzi też coraz szersze mówienie o produkcji badań naukowych, podkreślanie liczby opublikowanych prac i uzyskanych z nich punktów, w mniejszym stopniu skupianie się na jakości badań.

This thesis departs from the fact, that the use of social media platforms has become a precondition for politicians and parties, where social media have been presented as new opportunities to reach and engage voters, bypassing mass media, and levelling the political playing field. Now, however, politicians and parties face the limitations and control of platforms, and must submit to new forms of media logic, increased mediatization of politics. To comprehend this transformative shift, we must understand that digital and social media permeate all aspects of society, that we now live in a digital society. Sociologist Deborah Lupton have noted that ". the very idea of 'culture' or 'society' cannot now be fully understood without the recognition that computer software and hardware devices not only underpin but actively constitute selfhood, embodiment, social life, social relations and social institutions" (Lupton, 2014). This is certainly true in politics too. This thesis is contextualized within the formal arena of national politics in Denmark, including the Danish media system and the specificity of Danish political culture. Throughout the thesis, I focus on how social media platforms are used by Danish politicians, as an illustration of how the transformative power of platforms impacts formal politics, i.e., how politics is exercised and performed by politicians and political parties in election campaigns as well as in agenda-setting in everyday politics. The methodological approach of the thesis takes the form of an inductive, observational mapping of political life on social media and beyond in Denmark. This approach does in no way imply that the thesis is detached from theory. On the contrary, the overall argument is based on the conceptualisation of social media as a new form of social interaction, mediated online interaction, that takes place on media and technology platforms with distinct media logics of their own and which contributes to an increased mediatization of political communication culture and society. In practical terms, I explore three empirical cases. The first case, Governing with Social Media, is an introduction to the field of digital political communication in Denmark and how the party leaders and Members of Parliament use social media. In the second case, Breaking the Agenda, I explore how social media platforms are used for setting the agenda on social media platforms and in the news media. The primary focus is on how live streaming video is used in context of political events. Finally, in the last case, Danish Elections and Campaigning, I unfold how social media have been used in the past general elections. Among the main findings are that politicians are increasingly using multiple social media platforms to set the political agenda, stay visible to the voters and the news media, and cultivate the personal candidacy. Adding to this, although it is not possible to say that the use of social media will guarantee an election win, it seems clear that it has become virtually impossible to get elected without the use of social media. With this thesis, I aim to contribute to the limited, but emerging field of research in political communication on social media in Denmark. The field needs attention, if we want to understand the wider impact of social media on politics in digital society. As such, this thesis does not mark the end of research, but rather it is a part of the initial mapping of a growing research field, which I hope to explore more in the future.

The microblogging service Twitter has gained importance as an exchange platform for news photos that, in collaboration with renowned media, trigger immediate reactions from photo editors. Uploaded eyewit-ness material from terrorist attacks such as in Brussels (2016), Nice (2016), and Munich (2016), as well as from natural disasters such as the fires in Australia (2020), were the starting-point for my investigati-on: Twitter conversations show that photo editors from all over the world turn to (amateur) photogra-phers (hence, citizen- or para-photojournalists) to request permission to use the pictures in journalistic publications. Some even send a special "social media release form" in which they declare that they recog-nize the copyright holder, but will not pay for the use of the images – although they want to reserve the full rights to further distribution of the respective images over time, space and medium. One of my goals is to investigate the extent to which copyright and terms of use are shaped by social-me-dia companies and journalistic needs, as well as by the ignorance of 'produsers' (which is the term coi-ned by Axel Bruns to denote the hybridization of producer and user). My hypothesis is that the distinction between professionals and amateurs in the photojournalism industry is declining. The normalization of unpaid work carried out by produsers in journalism and the creative industries also affects professional standards and ethics. My CAIS working paper shows the preliminary results of my ongoing project.

My project "Behind the Digital Image: Public Photographs on Community Platforms and Twitter as Repositories for Machine Learning and Journalistic Publications" investigates the specificities of social media and photo-sharing platforms as public image repositories, daily media practices and legal practices, and considers ethical questions relating to the digital image as both a research tool and a research object. I pursue two sub-projects, both of which are relevant to understanding the commodification and monetization of vernacular digital images. Nuclear investigations of these projects refer to the relationship of amateur photographers, also referred to as citizen photojournalists, para photojournalists or accidental journalists, and professional stakeholders within the global image market. Since the digital world is quickly changing, field work is needed to understand processes and procedures as they happen. Therefore, I use multidimensional methods, including media ethnography; digital methods; qualitative approaches, such as in-depths interviews and participatory observation, and social media analytic tools. This paper presents an overview of the proposed project and sheds light on both the preliminary results and possible areas of future research.

Twitter conversations among photo editors and photo creators – produsers, citizen photojournalists, para-photojournalists – show that photo editors turn to (amateur) photographers to request permission to use their eyewitness material in journalistic publications. Reviewing the contested space of digital visual journalism between produsers, photo editors, and the commodification of networked images, I present three scenarios which exhibit how terms of use are negotiated online – hence publicly visible – between creators of Twitpics and editors of newspapers or photo agencies. The paper concludes with five results of the relation between photo editors and para-photojournalists on Twitter: fairness, efficiency, the value of digital images, effects of image sharing practices on visual journalism, and produsers' daily media practices.

Der Beitrag stellt ausgewählte Ergebnisse einer explorativen Studie vor. Ziel war, Expert*innenwissen über die Transformation des Berufsfeldes Fotojournalismus im digitalen Zeitalter zu erschließen und Gemeinsamkeiten an den Schnittstellen zwischen den genannten Berufsgruppen aufzuspüren: Wie wirkt sich die Digitalisierung auf die Arbeits- und Produktionsbedingungen von Fotojournalist*innen, Fotoredakteur*innen und Fotoproduzent*innen aus – sowohl auf die einzelnen Berufe als auch in ihrem Zusammenspiel als Akteur*innen des globalen Bildermarktes? Je Berufsgruppe werden zwei bis drei zentrale Motive herausgearbeitet, die von den Fotojournalist*innen, Fotoredakteur*innen und Fotoproduzent*innen als Herausforderungen wahrgenommen werden. Beispielsweise müssen Fotoredakteur*innen pro Tag tausende Bilder sichten, diverse Arbeitsstationen je nach Ressorts organisieren und mit unterschiedlichen Wertvorstellungen der Textredakteur*innen umgehen. Für Fotojournalist*innen hat die Digitalisierung viele neue Aufgaben gebracht, bei stetig sinkenden Honoraren: Ohne eine Diversifizierung ihres Angebots auch in den PR- und Lehrbereich hinein, wäre es für die wenigsten möglich, vom Journalismus zu leben. Obwohl die vorliegende Literatur dazu tendiert, Fotojournalismus und Stockfotografie als verschiedene Sphären zu betrachten, zeigen die Forschungsergebnisse doch Schnittmengen: Ein indirektes Konkurrenzverhältnis liegt vor, wenn Fotoredaktionen per Budget darüber entscheiden, Bilder aus einer abonnierten Agentur zu verwenden, statt eine*n Fotojournalist*in zu beauftragen. Der Beitrag zeigt, dass das Berufsfeld Fotojournalismus in der Visuellen Kommunikationsforschung gestärkt werden sollte, um Dynamiken und Transformationen durch die Digitalisierung in Produktion, Distribution und Machtstrukturen des Bildjournalismus zu verstehen.

The Family of Manis one of the most famous photo exhibitions of all times. Since 1994, the last remaining original is exhibited publicly in Luxemburg. Whereas scholars have dismissed The Family of Manfor decades as senti-mental and stereotypical, teachers embraced it early on for its potential to in-struct visual literacy. This article presents a set of three courses about The Fam-ily of Man, including a seminar, a practical tutorial, and an excursion to the exhibition in Clervaux, Luxemburg. It argues that The Family of Manisnowadays still important for teaching visual literacy at the intersection of photo history, photo theory, and exhibition design.

Celem opracowania jest identyfikacja podstawowych kwestii problemowych w badaniach przestrzeni społecznej i pojęć pokrewnych w kontekście współczesnych wyzwań polityki lokalnej i regionalnej. Zainteresowania przestrzenią społeczną wynikają nie tylko z konsekwencji transformacji ustrojowo-gospodarczej, procesu kurczenia się miast, suburbanizacji, ale także z nadal widocznego procesu uspołeczniania geografii. Konieczne stają się poszukiwania nowych koncepcji wyjaśniających złożoność owych procesów, zwłaszcza wobec konieczności rewitalizacji przestrzeni miejskiej. Dlatego szczególną uwagę w artykule poświęcono relacjom między przestrzenią społeczną, publiczną i mieszkaniową.
