Als zentrales Problem der US-Nahostpolitik seit 1948 wird die Unvereinbarkeit von drei Hauptzielen mit einem vierten herausgearbeitet: 1. Kontrolle und Eindämmung des sowjetischen Einflusses in der Region, 2. Sicherung der Erdölversorgung aus dem Golfgebiet, 3. Eindämmung des arabischen Radikalismus und Unterstützung der gemäßigten und pro-westlichen Regime in der Region und 4. - hierzu in gewissem Widerspruch stehend - die umfassende Unterstützung Israels. Im Mittelpunkt des Beitrags steht die Nahostpolitik der Reagan-Administration. (DÜI-Hns)

In 1948 Britain did not pursue either an anti-Zionist policy or an anti-Arab policy but a pro-British one. The controlling consideration behind British policy was how to limit the damage to the interests of the British empire that was bound to result from relinquishing direct control over Palestine.
