The present contribution analyses the European neighbourhood policy and the Eastern Partnership (EaP), which celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2019, from the perspective of social identity theory. It is argued that the evolution of both the European neighbourhood policy and the EaP corresponds to the emergence of a distinct EU identity: its 'potential we', which has been defying the Russian 'significant we' extended to the EaP states. Drawing on the framing analysis of strategic documents and statements, which identifies eight distinct themes, the contribution ascertains three different patterns of EaP states' interaction with the EU: Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine accepting the 'EU's potential we', Armenia holding to the potential we, and Azerbaijan, as well as Belarus, contesting the potential we. ; This study was conducted at the Research Center in Political Science (CICP) (UIDB/CPO/00758/2020), University of Minho/University of Evora and supported by the Fundacao para a Cencia e Tecnologia (Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, FCT) and the Portuguese Ministry of Education and Science through national funds.
AbstractThe present contribution analyses the European neighbourhood policy and the Eastern Partnership (EaP), which celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2019, from the perspective of social identity theory.
Book review of: Susan L. Woodward. The Ideology of Failed States: Why Intervention Fails. New York: Cambridge University Press, 2017. 324 pp., $89.99 hardback (ISBN: 978-1107176423). ; The concept of a "failed state" presents theoretical and empirical problems due to definitional complexity and the insufficient precision given to identifying a failed state. Moreover, the political ramifications of the term threaten countries labeled this way. Such propositions guide The Ideology of Failed States, an in-depth investigation into the role that labels play in the relationship between states and institutions. In this book, Woodward criticizes international institutions and the interventionist model of "failed states" they employ for sustaining the existing ideology surrounding the term.
This study, carried out with a sample of 70 caricatures published by Rayma, between January and May 2003 in El Universal, explores the application of some Bakhtinian concepts to the analysis of the discourse of humour, particularly in the political context. Preliminary findings indicate that a) the discourse of humour gives preference to the concept of "responding understanding", that is, the participation of the interlocutor in the construction of the textual meaning; b) this discourse allows for a "look into the social discourse of the other"; c) parodic dialogism produces an effect of intertextualkity that introduces a rupture in the discourse of power, generating a counter-discourse; d) the parodic subversion of official discourse may be associated with the notion of carnivalistic inversion, where the 'inside out' world becomes the norm; e) the use of words makes the textual and the intertextual conflate in the production of humoristic effects.
After exploring different theories and methods for the study of humor in political discourse, I take the challenge of choosing an approach to discourse analysis which defines discourse as multimodal (Gunter Kress, Leite-García and van Leewen, 2000) to study, from a sociosemiotic perspective, editorials taken from the Venezuelan newspaper TalCual, and published from October 2005 to April 2006. The editorials are all related to the topic of corruption, and specifically to the events that took place during that period at the Venezuelan Supreme Court of Justice. From this corpus, and for the purposes of this article, I have chosen an editorial that synthesizes the newspaper's stand on the problem, and that also establishes an intertextual relationship "" both at the iconic and linguistic dimensions"" with previous editorials. The editorials are placed on the front pages of Tal Cual, in a space fully illustrated with colorful images. I am particularly interested in the relationship established among the images conceived as symbols and the texts with which they dialogize. It is precisely in the intersection of these semiotic resources that humor and, above all, the evaluation of political discourse, are constructed.
