Flint, N orcid:0000-0003-4331-4109; Jackson, EL orcid:0000-0003-1708-4776; Rolfe, JC orcid:0000-0001-7659-7040 ; Australia is dependent on its port facilities for international trade. There are 20 ports in Queensland alone, two of which are within the Fitzroy Basin region. Water quality in ports is influenced by a wide variety of factors, some of which are unique to shipping and port operations. This synthesis report focuses on issues relating to water quality in the two Fitzroy region ports — the Port of Gladstone and the Port of Rockhampton, both managed by Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC) — as part of the Water Quality Improvement Plan being developed by the Fitzroy Basin Association (FBA) for the Fitzroy and coastal catchments, through funding from the Australian Government Reef Programme. Both of the Fitzroy region's ports are located in river estuaries, and the Port of Gladstone is also co-located with a regional city and a large industrial sector. The Port of Rockhampton is located in the delta of the Fitzroy River, which drains the largest river basin draining into the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) lagoon. Management, monitoring and assessment of water quality issues therefore has to occur in a framework where the multiple impacts on water quality of catchment, urban and industrial footprints interact with impacts from shipping and port operations. The purpose of this study is to summarise the factors that influence water quality at the two ports and to synthesise the processes used to monitor and manage these influences. The study provides a summary of the port maintenance and industrial activities at both ports, identifies and gathers together data on the variety of factors that could potentially influence water quality in the ports, describes current water quality monitoring and reporting, and summarises the management and legislative structures around port water quality. It also provides an analysis of research and knowledge gaps in the Port of Gladstone and the Port of Rockhampton.

The Semester of Code initiative organised virtual placements for university students around Europe, working on authentic business problems using open source software. The project was welcomed by stakeholders, and many companies and open source foundations became involved. However, the response from students was disappointing. In this paper we examine the reasons for this, discussing the results of the evaluation work carried out. Finally, we consider the implications of our work for student placements and the Knowledge Alliance European Union programme.

Abstract: Governments worldwide are releasing data into the public domain via open government data initiatives. Many such data sets are directly relevant to environmental science and complement data collected by academic researchers to address complex and challenging environmental problems. The Government of Canada is a leader in open data among Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development countries, generating and releasing troves of valuable research data. However, achieving comprehensive and FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable) open government data is not without its challenges. For example, identifying and understanding Canada's international commitments, policies, and guidelines on open data can be daunting. Similarly, open data sets within the Government of Canada are spread across a diversity of repositories and portals, which may hinder their discoverability. We describe Canada's federal initiatives promoting open government data, and outline where data sets of relevance to environmental science can be found. We summarize research data management challenges identified by the Government of Canada, plans to modernize the approach to open data for environmental science and best practices for data discoverability, access, and reuse. ; This project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No 838237.
