This is a collection of original studies that explores emotion in naturally occurring spoken interaction. The articles examine both the verbal and non-verbal resources for expressing emotional stance (lexicon, syntax, prosody, laughter, crying, facial expression), the emotional aspects of action sequences (e.g. news delivery and conflicts), and the role of emotions in institutional interaction (museums and galleries, psychotherapy, medical interaction and helpline calls).

Political Emotions explores the contributions that the study of discourses, rhetoric, and framing of emotion make to understanding the public sphere, civil society and the political realm. Tackling critiques on the opposition of the public and private spheres, chapters in this volume examine why some sentiments are valued in public communication while others are judged irrelevant, and consider how sentiments mobilize political trajectories.Emerging from the work of the Public Feelings research group at the University of Texas-Austin, and cohering in a New Agendas in Communication symposium, this volume brings together the work of young scholars from various areas of study, including sociology, gender studies, anthropology, art, theater, and new media. The essays in this collection formulate new ways of thinking about the relations between the emotional, the cultural, and the political. Contributors recraft familiar ways of doing critical work, and bring forward new analyses of emotions in politics. Their work expands understanding of the role of emotion in the political realm, and will be influential in political communication, political science, sociology, and related areas.

Mit der Bedeutung von Emotionen, Gefühlen und Leidenschaft für Individuum und Gesellschaft haben sich Soziologen seit jeher beschäftigt. Die Soziologie der Emotionen entstand jedoch erst etwa Mitte der 80er Jahre in den USA. Die Autorin zeichnet in diesem Lehrbuch zunächst die Rolle von Emotionen in den Werken der europäischen und amerikanischen Klassiker nach (Simmel, Max Weber, Durkheim, Cooley, Sorokin, Parsons u.a.). Sodann stellt sie die neueren Forschungsansätze und -ergebnisse dar und beschreibt schließlich Funktion und Einfluss von Emotionen in ausgewählten Bereichen, z.B. am Arbeitsplatz, im Umgang mit Geld und in der Politik.Prof. Dr. Helena Flam lehrt Soziologie an der Universität Leipzig.

Abstract
This paper attempts to coin a stipulative definition of "emotions" to determine their functions. In this sense, "emotion" is a complex phenomenon consisting of an accurate (reliable) determination of the state of affairs in relation to the state of the subject and specific "points of adaptation". Apart from the cognitive aspect, this phenomenon also includes behavior, physiological changes and expressions (facial expression, voice, posture), feelings, and "execution" of emotions in the nervous system. Emotions fulfill informative, calibrating, identifying, existential, and motivating functions. Emotions capture the world as either positive or negative, important or unimportant, and are used to determine and assign weightings (to set up a kind of hierarchy). They emerge automatically (involuntarily), are difficult (or hardly possible) to control and are (to some extent) influenced by culture.

Zunächst erörtert die Autorin die allgemeine soziologische Bedeutung von Emotionen. Anschließend wird die Geschlechtsspezifik von Gefühlsnormen und Gefühlsarbeit in Paarbeziehungen untersucht. Hier geht es unter anderem um die Frage, ob sich die Mechanismen auflösen, die dafür gesorgt haben, daß Frauen die Spezialistinnen für das Emotionale sind. Abschließend analysiert die Verfasserin die Bedeutung von Scham- und Schuldgefühlen bei der Verletzung von Partnerschafts- und Geschlechtsnormen in Intimbeziehungen. Gefühle wie Scham, Schuld und Angst werden in dieser Perspektive als Sanktionen oder als Präventivinstrument der Normerhaltung betrachtet. (ICE)

Die in Leipzig lehrende Professorin bearbeitet in diesem Buch ein in Deutschland bisher noch wenig beachtetes Arbeitsfeld der Soziologie, dem in den USA und in Großbritannien schon seit längerer Zeit größere Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet wird. Flam will mit der vorliegenden Einführung zeigen, wie vielfältig die Soziologie mit dem Komplex der Emotionen, Gefühle und Leidenschaften umgeht und wie spannend und erkenntnisreich die Untersuchungen ihrer Ursachen und Wirkungen sind. Einleitend setzt sie sich mit der Bedeutung von Emotionen im Werk der soziologischen Klassiker wie G. Simmel, M. Weber und E. Durkheim auseinander und stellt dann dar, wie sich - insbesondere in den USA - eine eigene Soziologie der Emotionen herausgebildet hat. In einem 3. Teil widmet sie sich der Rolle der Emotionen für das soziale Geschehen in verschiedenen Bereichen: am Arbeitsplatz, im Umgang mit Konsum und Geld und in der Politik. Das gut lesbare Buch liefert interessante Erkenntnisse und ist vor allem im 3. - dem konkretesten - Teil nicht nur für Studenten und Fachleute von Interesse. (3)

This Element brings together the history of emotions and temporalities, offering a new perspective on both. Time was often imagined as a movement from the past to the future: the past is gone and the future not yet here. Only present-day subjects could establish relations to other times, recovering history as well as imagining and anticipating the future. In a movement paralleling the emphasis on the porous self, constituted by emotions situated not inside but between subjects, this Element argues for a porous present, which is open to the intervention of ghosts coming from the past and from the future. What needs investigating is the flow between times as much as the creation of boundaries between them, which first banishes the ghosts and then denies their existence. Emotions are the most important way through which subjects situate and understand themselves in time.
