"Small state behavior has been largely ignored by academics in both international relations and strategic/intelligence studies. Yet, when we analyze the root causes of war, insurrections, rebellions, revolutions and general sociological human behavior, it is the small state actors that are usually at the epicenter of the tumultuous event. It is the spark from inside the small state actor - whether it is Serbia, Czechoslovakia, Cuba, Vietnam, Kuwait, Iraq or Syria -- that seemingly leads to internal and external confrontations that inevitably involve much larger states. To date, a book length analysis like this has yet to be published. The scope of this project is to provide an analysis of a sampling of small state's behavior in order to build on a unifying theory of security/intelligence studies. This analysis will necessarily survey the breadth of security/intelligence studies from Clausewitz to current applicable United Nations' Resolutions and international law. In short, if we can understand how political structures affect the behavior of small states, it will be a major contribution to the field of security/intelligence studies enabling policy makers, scholars and the general public to separate fact from myth in analyzing the strategic policies of small states."--

AbstractThis research letter introduces readers to health intelligence by conceptualizing critical components and providing a primer for research within political science broadly considered. Accordingly, a brief review of the literature is provided, concluding with possible future research agendas. The aim is to elaborate on the importance of public health intelligence to national security studies, and to political science more generally.

Nuclear weapons have attracted long-standing scholarly interest. They have been studied from various perspectives, such as their impact on the international system, their role in shaping foreign and security policy, and their proliferation since 1945. Patrick C. Coaty's book adopts the last viewpoint and looks at the decisions that affected elite decisions to acquire nuclear weapons. As the title suggests, the book aims to contribute to several streams of scholarly literature, namely strategic studies, small states scholarship, and IR theory. Composed of a comprehensive theoretical chapter and five empirical chapters, besides the introduction and conclusion, it analyses the strategic thinking behind nuclear proliferation. The book draws two conclusions, one analytical and one policy-oriented. Proliferation, it argues, is a result of domestic elites' efforts to increase their international legitimacy. Second, it offers a policy recommendation along the classic neorealist lines: the safest way to prevent war is to proliferate nuclear weapons as much as possible so that conflict becomes too costly for everybody. ; N/A

The paper is not intended to be a comprehensive review of the field of Intelligence Studies
but summarises the major currents in research in this area, in the last twenty years. In addition, it suggests directions for future research concluding that Intelligence Studies represents a healthy and growing activity of great relevance to contemporary security governance. There are identified a few challenges for the development of the domain, mainly the fact that Anglo-American authors and subject matter continue to dominate the literature, and the fact that the relations between the academic institutions and intelligence agencies, the civil-military relations, have not always been easy.
